King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 will be closed and eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane periodically overnight next week near 30th Street in Philadelphia for removal of a section of the concrete deck on the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

On Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the South Street and Interstate 676 interchanges.  The contractor also may periodically close one lane of eastbound I-76 between I-676 and South Street each night from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

In addition, the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street may close periodically from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM each night during the deck removal operations. PennDOT - District 6 News: U.S. 1, Street Road Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Barrier Adjustment in Bensalem Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1, Street Road Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Barrier Adjustment in Bensalem Township

King of Prussia, PA – Lane closures will be in place at night next week in each direction on U.S. 1 and Street Road (Route 132) in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, for barrier adjustments and other activities in the new traffic patterns that will be in effect this weekend on U.S. 1 and the ramps to and from eastbound Street Road (Route 132), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

On Monday, February 25, through Friday, March 1, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, northbound and southbound U.S. 1 will be reduced to a single lane between Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway, and Street Road (Route 132) will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The lane restrictions will allow crews to adjust and secure the temporary construction barriers and finish line striping for new traffic patterns on both roadways. The patterns, which are expected to be fully in place by early Saturday, February 23, move all U.S. 1 traffic to the west and close the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and eastbound Street Road (Route 132).  The closed ramps are being re-routed to the ramps on the opposite side of the interchange, where a temporary signalized intersection has been constructed at the base of those ramps. The temporary intersection allows ramp traffic to access eastbound and westbound Street Road (Route 132), and eastbound Street Road (Route 132) to access northbound U.S. 1. The ramp from westbound Street Road (Route 132) to northbound U.S. 1 remains open during construction at the interchange.

The new traffic pattern marks the start of two years of northbound reconstruction, including reconstruction of the Street Road (Route 132) ramps on the northbound side of the interchange, on a $94 million project to widen and improve a 1.3-mile section of U.S. 1 from Old Lincoln Highway, at the Philadelphia border, to north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Bensalem Interchange.

This corridor improvement project is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.

U.S. 30/Exton Bypass motorists heading to northbound U.S. 202 will exit at Business U.S. 30, turn right onto Business U.S. 30 and right onto the ramp to northbound U.S. 202.

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

More Vehicle Restrictions Removed at 10:00 PM

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and PA Turnpike have lifted additional vehicle restrictions that were imposed as part of the storm impacting much of the state.

Effective at 10:00 PM, the full commercial vehicle ban is lifted on I-70 in Fulton County (from the Maryland state line to the Turnpike). Additionally, the prohibition on empty, straight CDL-weighted trucks; all Large Combination Vehicles (double trailers); tractors hauling empty trailers; any trailers pulled by motorcycles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks or SUVs; all motorcycles; and all recreational vehicles and RVs is removed on the following roadways:

  • I-76 (non-Turnpike);
  • I-78 full length from I-81 to the New Jersey state line;
  • I-81 from the Maryland state line to I-78;
  • I-83 from the Maryland state line to I-81;
  • I-283;
  • I-476 (non-Turnpike, full length);
  • I-476 (PA Turnpike, Northeast Ext.) from Mid County (exit 20) to the Lehigh Valley exit;
  • I-676; and
  • Route 22 from I-78 to the New Jersey state line.
A full commercial vehicle ban (including buses) remains in place on I-99 from I-80 to the Turnpike.

Agencies are continually monitoring roadway and weather conditions to determine when additional restrictions may be lifted. Due to continued mixed precipitation and lower temperatures, a restriction on only empty, straight CDL-weighted trucks; all Large Combination Vehicles (double trailers); tractors hauling empty trailers; any trailers pulled by motorcycles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks or SUVs; all motorcycles; and all recreational vehicles and RVs remains on the following roadways:
  • I-80 from the I-79 interchange to the New Jersey state line;
  • I-81 from I-78 to the New York state line;
  • I-84 full length from I-81 to the New York state line;
  • I-180 full length from Route 220/U.S. 15 to I-80;
  • I-380 full length from I-81 to I-80;
  • I-476 (PA Turnpike, Northeast Ext.) from the Lehigh Valley exit to Clarks Summit (exit 131); and
  • Route 33 from I-78 to I-80.
A 45-mph speed restriction is in place on many roadways, with all speed and vehicle restrictions viewable at www.511PA.com.

A vehicle emergency kit should be prepared or restocked containing items such as non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, cell phone charger and a small snow shovel. Motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families have such as baby supplies, extra medication and pet supplies.

Motorists should be aware that all vehicles should be fully clear of ice and snow before winter travel. If snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury, the operator of that vehicle could receive a $200 to $1,000 fine.

When winter weather occurs, PennDOT urges drivers to be extra cautious around operating snow-removal equipment. When encountering a plow truck, drivers should:

  • Stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember that the main plow is wider than the truck.
  • Be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other traffic.
  • When a plow truck is traveling toward you, move as far away from the center of the road as is safely possible, and remember that snow can obscure the actual snow plow width.
  • Never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a "plow train." The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles.
  • Never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the operator can't see, and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting drifts or heavy snowpack.
  • Keep your lights on to help the operator better see your vehicle. Also remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every time a vehicle's wipers are on due to inclement weather.
To report an accident or other emergencies on the PA Turnpike, dial *11 on your mobile phone. If there is an accident, move the car out of travel lane and onto shoulder, if possible, and stay in the vehicle. PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Several Area Roadways in the Philadelphia Region

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Reduces Speed Limits on Several Area Roadways in the Philadelphia Region

King of Prussia, PA – Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on several roadways in the Philadelphia region.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:
  • Interstates 76, 95, 295, 476, 676;
  • U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422; and
  • State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309.
Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department's primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

The department asks motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.

At noon today, PennDOT and the PA Turnpike will prohibit only empty, straight CDL-weighted trucks; all Large Combination Vehicles (double trailers); tractors hauling empty trailers; any trailers pulled by motorcycles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks or SUVs; all motorcycles; and all recreational vehicles and RVs on the following roadways:
  • PA Turnpike (I-76, I-276) from I-81 to I-95 (Exit 43);
  • I-76 (Turnpike and non-Turnpike, New Stanton to Philadelphia);
  • I-78 full length from I-81 to the New Jersey state line;
  • I-80 from I-99 to the New Jersey state line;
  • I-81 from the Maryland state line to the New York state line;
  • I-83 from the Maryland state line to I-81;
  • I-84 full length from I-81 to the New York state line;
  • I-176;
  • I-180 full length from Route 220/U.S. 15 to I-80;
  • I-276; PA Turnpike
  • I-283;
  • I-295;
  • I-380 full length from I-81 to I-80;
  • I-476 (non-Turnpike, full length);
  • I-476 (PA Turnpike, Northeast Ext.) from Mid County (exit 20) to Clarks Summit (exit 131);
  • I-676;
  • Route 22 from I-78 to the New Jersey state line; and
  • Route 33 from I-78 to I-80.
At 6:00 AM this morning, a full commercial vehicle ban (including buses) was put in place on I-70 in Fulton County (from the Maryland state line to the Turnpike) and I-99 from I-80 to the Turnpike.
