PennDOT - District 6 News: U.S. 1 Lane Closures Next Week for Construction in Bucks County

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 Lane Closures Next Week for Construction in Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA - U.S. 1 in Bucks County will be reduced to a single lane in each direction Tuesday, July 6, through Thursday, July 8, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, for placement of construction barriers in the median between the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange and Route 413 interchanges in Bensalem and Middletown townships, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The barriers will protect work crews during ongoing construction to reconstruct, widen, and improve U.S.1 in that area.

In addition, periodic lane restrictions also may be in place Tuesday, July 6, through Thursday, July 8, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, for construction on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between Old Lincoln Highway and the Turnpike Interchange, and on eastbound and westbound Street Road (Route 132) between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way in Bensalem Township.

Crews are reconstructing and widening almost three miles of roadway, improving the interchanges, and constructing several new bridges — including new structures over the Neshaminy Creek and over rail lines near the Penndel exit — under two contracts (RC1, RC2) to rebuild, widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County.

JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the general contractor on the $110.8 million Section RC2 project that is scheduled be completed in mid-2026. Alan Myers Construction, of Worcester, PA, is the general contractor on the $95 million Section RC1 project that is expected to be completed in late 2021.

Sections RC1 and RC2 are two of the three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough. PennDOT - District 6 News: U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) Lane Closure Next Week for Traffic Camera Installation in Upper Merion Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) Lane Closure Next Week for Traffic Camera Installation in Upper Merion Township

King of Prussia, PA – U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) motorists will encounter a single lane closure in both directions between Mall Boulevard and Henderson Road in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, on Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for traffic camera installation under a project to upgrade traffic signals along several corridors in Montgomery County near Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), to help alleviate congestion on the expressway.

Motorists are advised to allow more time for travel in the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur. The contractor's schedule is weather dependent.

In addition to U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), the arterial corridors being addressed under this project include:

  • Route 23 (Front Street/Crawford Avenue/Conshohocken State Road) between Balligomingo Road and Spring Garden Street in West Conshohocken Borough;
  • Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) at Spring Mill Road in Lower Merion Township;
  • Gulph Road between Village Drive and Brooks Road in Upper Merion Township;
  • Gulph Road between Shoemaker Road and Matsonford Road in Upper Merion Township;
  • Matsonford Road between Gulph Road and Route 23 (Front Street) in Lower Merion and West Conshohocken Borough; and
  • Henderson Road between Shoemaker Road and U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in in Upper Merion Township.

The signal improvements and installations along the adjacent arterials include Statewide Traffic Signal Command and Control Software; Adaptive Signal Systems; Advanced Traffic Signal Controllers; Communication Infrastructure; Closed Circuit TV Cameras; Traveler Information System (TIS); Upgrades of Existing Traffic Signal Equipment; Operational Policies; Advanced Technologies; and Security Systems. These upgrades are intended to complement mainline I-76 ITS elements and will improve corridor performance, signal coordination and communication; monitor congestion, incidents, and traffic patterns; reduce travel times with incident and emergency response plans; and share traveler information, real-time data, and transit alternatives with road users.

This project is Phase 1 of a multi-phased program to improve traffic operations and help alleviate congestion for motorists traveling on I-76. The purpose of Phase 1 is to upgrade traffic signals along arterial roadway corridors that experience increasing congestion as motorists seek alternative routes to traveling on I-76. Upgrades made to these systems will help establish an Integrated Corridor Management System (ICMS), which will provide a seamless integration of signals currently owned by respective municipalities. The intent will be for PennDOT to eventually take ownership and maintenance responsibility of traffic signals from municipalities where these adjacent arterial roadways are located. Once all the phases of the program are in place, the project will provide PennDOT with a fully integrated corridor across multiple jurisdictions and roadway types to effectively respond to incidents, diversions and special events.

Physical construction on this phase is expected to finish this summer. The time following the completion of construction will include several months of traffic signal operation and testing to determine the feasibility of expanding this plan to additional signalized corridors.

Armour & Sons Electric, Inc., of Langhorne, Bucks County, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, PFBC, USCG, AAA Remind Motorists and Boaters to Drive Sober and Be Safe this Independence Day

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, PFBC, USCG, AAA Remind Motorists and Boaters to Drive Sober and Be Safe this Independence Day

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today joined the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC), United States Coast Guard (USCG), and AAA Mid-Atlantic at the Ridley Township Municipal Marina in Ridley Park, Delaware County, to promote driving and boating safety for the Independence Day holiday.

Participants discussed the need to remain vigilant while celebrating Fourth of July festivities; it is vital to remain sober while operating a vehicle or vessel. Alcohol and drug use can impair a person's judgment and reaction time. Motorists who drive impaired, whether behind the wheel of a car or a boat, not only endanger themselves but their passengers and others on the roadways and waterways.

PennDOT is reminding motorists to celebrate responsibly and never drive impaired. According to PennDOT data, from June 26, 2020, through July 5, 2020, there were 2,591 crashes, resulting in 41 fatalities statewide. Of those crashes, 266 involved impaired driving, resulting in 13 fatalities. Never drive impaired. Take the keys away from a friend or loved one who is impaired to prevent them from driving, designate a sober driver, or use a rideshare app. Motorists should also obey the speed limit, never drive distracted, and always buckle up.

From July 2 through July 4, PFBC waterways conservation officers (WCO) will participate in Operation Dry Water, a nationally organized effort to conduct enhanced boating under the influence (BUI) enforcement. WCOs are trained to detect signs of impaired boating and conduct sobriety tests on the water. The public is reminded that the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle or any watercraft, powered or unpowered, is .08 percent blood alcohol concentration. In addition, boaters are reminded to wear a life jacket, have a float plan, avoid summer storms that can cause treacherous fast and high-water conditions, designate a sober boater, and consider having no alcohol while aboard a boat since intoxicated passengers are also at risk of injury and falls overboard.

AAA Mid-Atlantic expects a significant rebound in travel this summer. The travel volume for the Independence Day holiday weekend is expected to increase by nearly 50% locally (to more than 660,000 Philadelphia-area residents traveling) compared to 2020, reaching the second-highest travel volume on record for the holiday. And the Great America Road Trip is back, as more than 90% of Independence Day holiday travelers will go by car this year.

"Optimism coinciding with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and growing consumer confidence are fueling a strong desire to travel this summer as the U.S. takes steps toward putting the pandemic behind us," said Jana Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "When venturing out, travelers should heed all rules of the road, including never drinking and driving. Impaired driving is 100 percent preventable. If you consume alcohol, marijuana, or use potentially impairing prescription medications, then don't drive. And if you're going to drive, then don't consume these substances."

PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 West to Close Wednesday, Thursday Nights at 30th Street for Viaduct Construction in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 West to Close Wednesday, Thursday Nights at 30th Street for Viaduct Construction in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 at 30th Street or the westbound off-ramp to 30th Street will be closed alternately on Wednesday, June 30, and Thursday, July 1, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for viaduct construction in Center City Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The overnight closure planned on westbound I-76 for Monday, June 28 and Tuesday, June 29, has been cancelled.

When westbound I-76 is closed, traffic will be detoured to the off-ramp at 30th Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to westbound I-76 at Market Street.

When the westbound off-ramp to 30th Street is closed, westbound I-76 also will be reduced to one lane between 30th Street and Interstate 676. Off-ramp traffic will be detoured east on I-676, exit at 23rd Street, turn left on 22nd Street to the ramp to I-676 west, then take the ramp to I-76 east and the exit at 30th Street.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes or allow extra time when traveling near the work area as backups and delays may occur. All operations are weather dependent.

The lane and ramp closures will allow crews to install overhead electrical conduit and repair the retaining wall between the expressway and the Schuylkill River.

In addition, Chestnut Street will be restored to three lanes between 33rd Street and Schuylkill Avenue, and two-way traffic will be restored on Schuylkill Avenue between Market Street and Walnut Street in the vicinity of 30th Street Station by Thursday morning, July 1. Lane restrictions have been in place on both roadways since the start of construction in fall 2017.

The section of the Schuylkill River Trail under the Chestnut Street Bridge is expected to reopen by Friday, July 2, following the completion of work that closed the trail in mid-February for repairs to the retaining wall that supports the trail along the east bank of the river.

PennDOT is completing the repairs in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department — which owns the Trail and it's non-profit partner the Schuylkill River Development Corporation — as part of its project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street Bridge and eight other nearby structures.

PennDOT's contractor removed sub-surface obstructions that were discovered at the start of the operation, repaired the section of the wall that passes beneath the bridge, and will repave the section of the wall under the bridge and regrade the landscaping at the repair location prior to re-opening the closed section by the end of next week.

For more information on this project, visit www.chestnutstreetbridges.com.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 1 Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Construction in Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA - U.S. 1 in Bucks County will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on Monday, June 28, through Thursday, July 1, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, for placement of construction barriers along the northbound and southbound shoulders and median between the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange and Route 413 interchanges in Bensalem and Middletown townships, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The barriers will protect work crews during ongoing construction to widen and improve U.S.1 in that area.

In addition, periodic lane restrictions also may be in place Sunday, June 27, through Thursday, July 1, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, for construction on northbound and southbound U.S.

202 South (Dekalb Pike) Lane Closure Scheduled Next Week for Traffic Camera Installation in Upper Merion Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S. 202 South (Dekalb Pike) Lane Closure Scheduled Next Week for Traffic Camera Installation in Upper Merion Township

King of Prussia, PA – Southbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) motorists will encounter a single lane closure between Henderson Road and Gulph Road in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, on Monday, June 28, through Friday, July 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for traffic camera installation under a project to upgrade traffic signals along several corridors in Montgomery County near Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), to help alleviate congestion on the expressway.

Motorists are advised to allow more time for travel in the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur. The contractor's schedule is weather dependent.

In addition to U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), the arterial corridors being addressed under this project include:

  • Route 23 (Front Street/Crawford Avenue/Conshohocken State Road) between Balligomingo Road and Spring Garden Street in West Conshohocken Borough;
  • Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) at Spring Mill Road in Lower Merion Township;
  • Gulph Road between Village Drive and Brooks Road in Upper Merion Township;
  • Gulph Road between Shoemaker Road and Matsonford Road in Upper Merion Township;

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Route 252 (Palmer's Mill Road) Reduced to Single Lane Beginning July 13 for Bridge Construction in Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA – Route 252 (Palmer's Mill Road) will be reduced to a single lane between Lakeview Drive and Newtown Street in Upper Providence and Marple townships, Delaware County, beginning Tuesday, July 13, through Thursday, September 30, for bridge construction under a project to replace the structure that carries Route 252 (Palmer's Mill Road) over the Springton Reservoir, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. Traffic will be controlled by a temporary signal.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

The purpose of the bridge replacement is to address existing deficiencies of the Route 252 (Palmer's Mill Road) bridge and provide increased span length to accommodate Aqua Pennsylvania's future spillway improvement project.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County is the general contractor on the $13.3 million project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
