Mosquito Spraying for West Nile Virus Planned for September 1 in Lower Moreland Township

NORRISTOWN, PA – The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Public Health (OPH), after consulting with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and Abington Township officials, will be adulticiding (spraying) to control the adult mosquito population in selected areas. The spraying will be done where sampling by the OPH and PADP has shown mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus (WNV). For notification of any future spray events, sign up with the County's emergency notification system, ReadyMontco.

The spray events will occur, weather permitting on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The alternate date will be Thursday, September 2, 2021. All areas within the highlighted section of the map shown will be subjected to the spray. An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 West Nighttime Lane Closure Next Week for Barrier Installation in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – A left lane closure is scheduled on westbound Interstate 76 between the Girard Avenue and Montgomery Drive interchanges in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, September 1, and Thursday, September 2, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for barrier installation under a project to improve travel and safety on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, milling and paving will take place on I-76 in both directions between the Montgomery Drive and Girard Avenue/U.S. 13 interchanges, as well as portions of the Montgomery Drive interchange ramps. Most of the paving will occur overnight. The deteriorating concrete median barrier will also be replaced, and high-friction surface treatment will be installed in select areas along I-76 to improve safety during inclement weather.

Milling and paving operations, as well as guiderail and concrete median replacements, will also occur on Route 82 (Manor Road/1st Street) in the City of Coatesville and Valley Township, Chester County. In addition, PennDOT's contractor will reconfigure the Wagontown Road and Route 82 (Manor Road/1st Street) intersection to require vehicles to stop prior to entering Route 82 (Manor Road1st Street).

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $3,265,646 project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is expected to be completed this fall.

PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange To Close Saturday, September 11, for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange To Close Saturday, September 11, for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 76 motorists traveling eastbound will encounter a ramp closure at the University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 11, from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, due to a project to improve travel and safety at the University Avenue/34th Street intersection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange closure, motorists will be directed to use the 30th Street Interchange, Arch Street, 30th Street, Market Street, and 38th Street. In addition, an alternative detour route offered directs I-76 eastbound motorists to take the Passyunk Avenue/Oregon Avenue Interchange, I-76 West, and the University Avenue Interchange.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will realign the intersection, which is listed on the National Highway System and is classified as an "Urban Principal Arterial", through relocating the lane on which exiting I-76 eastbound motorists currently merge onto westbound University Avenue and moving it closer to the ramp's existing signalized intersection with University Avenue/34th Street. This safety improvement will allow the traffic signal to control the right turn onto westbound University Avenue instead of a yield sign. Dual right turn lanes will also be added for this new turning move.

In addition, the contractor will resurface and upgrade traffic signals at the intersection; rebuild ADA curb ramps to improve pedestrian safety; and install new guiderail, drainage, and stormwater management features at this location.

Tony DePaul & Son of Flourtown is the general contractor on this $1,930,228 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in fall 2023.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania DUI Association Urge Responsible, Designated Driving Ahead of Labor Day Holiday

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania DUI Association Urge Responsible, Designated Driving Ahead of Labor Day Holiday

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and the Pennsylvania DUI Association gathered today with local police agencies and victim's advocates in the DUI Victims' Memorial Garden to urge motorists to celebrate responsibly ahead of the Labor Day holiday.

"Crashes involving impaired drivers are entirely preventable," said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. "We are urging motorists to ensure their safety and the safety of others on our roadways by designating a sober driver this Labor Day weekend and every time they drink."

The event featured victim advocate Kelli Donlen, whose nephew Zachary Gonzalez is memorialized in the DUI Victims' Memorial Garden. The garden, which was dedicated in October 2003 and is located in front of the Pennsylvania DUI Association's headquarters in Harrisburg, honors and remembers Pennsylvanians who have been killed in impaired driving crashes. Currently, more than 2,200 people are memorialized in the garden.

According to PennDOT data, in 2020 there were 2,698 crashes resulting in 39 fatalities statewide over the holiday week beginning Friday, September 4 at 6:00 PM and running through Sunday, September 13. Of those numbers, 231 crashes resulting in 12 fatalities were alcohol-related and 104 crashes resulting in three fatalities were drug-related.

Impaired driving enforcement goes beyond checking for alcohol impairment. Law enforcement also work to identify motorists impaired by illegal drugs and prescription medication or some combination of these. Pennsylvania has approximately 225 Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) or specially trained officers who look for impaired drivers and assist in DUI investigations when drug-impaired driving is suspected.

"We honor and remember the lives lost because someone chooses to drive impaired," said PA DUI Association Executive Director C. Stephen Erni. "Labor Day weekend and every remaining day of the year, the message is clear: Do not drive impaired. Our collective goal is to end the suffering caused by an individual's choice to drive impaired."

Over this holiday period, the Pennsylvania State Police and local municipal agencies will conduct impaired driving enforcement details as part of a national impaired driving enforcement and education initiative running through September 6. This effort is funded through PennDOT's statewide annual distribution of more than $4.7 million from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for impaired driving enforcement.

During the 2019 Labor Day holiday enforcement period, troopers made 610 DUI arrests and investigated 45 crashes in which alcohol was a factor. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and mitigation efforts that were in place throughout Pennsylvania at the time, statistical information was not collected during the 2020 Labor Day holiday driving period.

"Travelers are reminded this holiday weekend to slow down, buckle up, and don't drive impaired or distracted," said Captain Robert Wagner, assistant director of the Bureau of Patrol with the Pennsylvania State Police. "Troopers are trained to look for impaired driving behaviors and consistent with our highway safety mission have a zero-tolerance approach toward driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

PennDOT encourages motorists to always plan ahead by either designating a sober driver or arranging for alternate transportation. The public can join the conversation on social media by using #BeSafePA and #DriveSober.

The PAcast for today's statewide Labor Day Impaired Driving media event is available online at https://pacast.com/m?p=18979.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Reopens Route 63 (Red Lion Road) in Lower Moreland Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Reopens Route 63 (Red Lion Road) in Lower Moreland Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has reopened Route 63 (Red Lion Road) over Huntingdon Valley Creek in Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County, following the completion of a culvert replacement project.

PennDOT's contractor replaced the existing 92-year-old structure, measured at 14 feet long and 20 feet wide, with a new wider precast concrete arch culvert, which is 14 feet long and 50 feet wide. The added width will improve traffic flow for the on average 13,082 vehicles that travel over the structure daily. Other improvements included storm water management, signalization, sidewalk, and ADA curb ramp upgrades.

Route 63 (Red Lion Road) culvert is one of five structures in Chester, Montgomery, and Delaware counties that PennDOT is repairing or replacing under a $4,948,703 project.

Structures completed under this project include:

  • Kaolin Road over the west branch of Red Clay Creek in Kennett Township, Chester County;
  • Concord Road over Green Creek in Concord Township, Delaware County; and
  • Brower's Bridge (Mansion Road) over the south branch of French Creek in Warwick and East Nantmeal townships, Chester County.

Another structure in progress includes:

  • Route 320 (Trinity Lane) over Gulph Mills Creek in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County. Built in 1789, the Trinity Lane Bridge is also listed with the National Register of Historic Places and noted as the fifth oldest bridge in the Unites States of America.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on this bridge improvement project that is financed with 100 percent state funds. Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late fall 2021.

Adult Mosquito Spraying in Select Areas of Norristown on 8/24

This is a message from ReadyMontco
Please click here to acknowledge receipt of this message

Mosquito Spraying for West Nile Virus Planned for Norristown Municipality on August 24

NORRISTOWN, PA – The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Public Health (OPH), after consulting with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and Norristown Municipality officials, will be adulticiding (spraying) to control the adult mosquito population in selected areas. The spraying will be done where sampling by the OPH and PADP has shown mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus (WNV). For notification of any future spray events, sign up with the County's emergency notification system, ReadyMontco.

The spray events will occur, weather permitting on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, from approximately 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The alternate date will be Thursday, August 26, 2021. All areas within the highlighted section of the map shown will be subjected to the spray. Residents within the spray area should consider remaining indoors, closing windows and turning off ventilation systems that draw in outside air for the duration of the spray plus 30 minutes afterward.

Workers will be using a Duet® Dual-Action Adulticide at a rate of .75 fluid ounces per acre applied with a truck mounted ultra low volume (ULV) sprayer. The spray will be performed by OPH personnel.

The OPH will work with appropriate agencies to identify, eliminate and/or treat with larvicide, areas where mosquitoes are breeding. Residents may contact the OPH at 610.278.5117, if there is an area of standing water of concern that may be breeding mosquitoes. The adult mosquito program will only be used in limited situations to reduce disease-infected adult mosquitoes.

For further information about the products being used, visit the OPH website.

Residents can follow these tips to help eliminate mosquito-breeding areas around the home:

  • Identify and eliminate all sources of standing water. Mosquitoes will breed in any stagnant water that stands for five or more days.
  • Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic posts or similar water holding containers. Don't overlook container that have become overgrown by aquatic vegetation.
  • Pay special attention to discarded tires that may have collected water. They can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling container that are left outdoors. Drainage holes that are located on the container sides collect enough water for mosquitoes to breed in.
  • Have clogged roof gutters cleaned on an annual basis, particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to block drains.
  • Turn over plastic wading pols when not in use. A wading pool becomes a place for mosquitoes to breed if it is not used on a regular basis.
  • Turn over wheelbarrows and do not allow water to stagnate in birdbaths.
  • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens are fashionable but become major mosquito breeding grounds if they are allowed to stagnate.
  • Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated. A swimming pool that is left untended becomes a source of mosquito breeding. Be aware that mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on swimming pool covers.
