PennDOT to Begin Construction on Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) Intersection Improvement Project in New Hanover Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Wednesday, June 1, on a project to improve safety and travel on Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) through the intersection with Swamp Pike in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will:

  • Reconstruct and widen Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) to accommodate left turn lanes on both approaches to Swamp Pike;
  • Install new ADA curb ramps, sidewalk, and traffic signals at the intersection; and
  • Replace and widen the existing 96-year-old culvert that carries Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) over Minsters Creek.

Beginning Wednesday, June 1, Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) motorists will encounter a lane closure between Swamp Pike and Swamp Picnic Road for sewer relocation operations. The lane closure will remain in place weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM through Wednesday, June 8.

Following the sewer operations, Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) is scheduled to close between Swamp Pike and Swamp Picnic Road beginning Monday, June 13, for the culvert replacement over Ministers Creek. The closure is expected to remain in place 24/7 until late August.

During the closure, Route 663 (North Charlotte Street) motorists will be directed to use Swamp Pike and Route 73 (Big Road). Local access will be maintained up to the constriction zone.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

J. Anderson Construction Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $2,577,104 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed this fall.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Completes Erie Avenue Bridge Removal, Roadway Reconstruction in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Completes Erie Avenue Bridge Removal, Roadway Reconstruction in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reopened Erie Avenue today after construction finished to remove the bridge over the abandoned Conrail line and reconstruct the roadway between 3rd Street and Lawrence Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia. Erie Avenue had been closed to traffic since work began in December 2020.

The work is part of a project to remove two bridges and reconstruct the roadways that carry Erie Avenue over the abandoned Conrail line and the bridge carrying 5th Street over the abandoned Conrail line between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street.

Work to remove and reconstruct 5th Street is expected to begin early this summer. During construction, 5th Street will be closed and detoured between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street for 12 months. Detours will be posted to reroute vehicles and pedestrians traveling both north and south along 5th Street. A detour for trucks will be implemented to reroute trucks traveling south on 5th Street.

The purpose of this project is to provide a long-term transportation facility that is built to current standards, capable of handling the volume of expected traffic along this state highway and ensures a safe and efficient movement of multi-model transportation along a locally important network.

Tony DePaul and Son is the general contractor on the $7.7 million project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to finish in summer 2023.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East or West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Construction in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Alternating closures of either eastbound or westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the vicinity of 30th Street in Center City Philadelphia will occur on Tuesday, May 31, through Thursday, June 2, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for overhead viaduct construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

When eastbound I-76 is closed between 30th Street and South Street, traffic will be directed to use the off-ramp at 30th Street, turn left on Chestnut Street, then turn right on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to eastbound I-76 at Walnut Street.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT, Safety Partners Highlight Traffic Safety During Memorial Day Across Southeast Pennsylvania

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT, Safety Partners Highlight Traffic Safety During Memorial Day Across Southeast Pennsylvania

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), TMA Bucks County, Bucks County District Attorney, Newtown Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police, and AAA held an event today at the Newtown Police Department to outline regional driving safety efforts during the Memorial Day holiday.

"As we approach Memorial Day weekend, a day to honor our nation's heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice, we want to remind everyone to be safe," District Attorney Matt Weintraub said. "Everyone should enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, but please do it without putting yourself and others in danger by getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs."

With an increase in travelers in the summer months, typically, there is an increase in drunk-driving arrests and deaths, starting with the Memorial Day weekend.

That is why motorists are reminded to plan ahead if they will be celebrating.

"If you plan to drink, have a sober driver to take you home or consider using a rideshare program," Weintraub said. "If it is your turn to be the designated driver, do not consume alcohol and take the role seriously."

"If you're hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home and don't let them get behind the wheel if they've been drinking. Drunk driving is one of the deadliest and most often committed crimes, yet it's one of the most preventable," Weintraub said.

According to PennDOT data, in 2020, there were 310 crashes and three fatalities in the Philadelphia region during the Memorial Day travel period beginning on Friday, May 22, running through Monday, May 25. Of those, 27 crashes and three fatalities were impaired-driving related.

As a result, state and law enforcement agencies unveiled their plans to reduce crashes over the weekend, which runs concurrently with the national "Click It or Ticket" mobilization, a seat belt awareness campaign that ends June 5.

Police said they would focus on people who drive dangerously, such as speeding. In addition, they will look out for seat belt violations and drivers who text or commit other careless acts behind the wheel. The state's legal blood alcohol limit is .08, so watch that beer or alcohol intake unless you've arranged for a way to get home safely, they added.
Police also noted the "move over law" in which drivers must give disabled vehicles and first responders a wide berth.

Under the law, drivers approaching an emergency response area who are unable to safely merge into a lane farther away from the response area must "pass the emergency response area at a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing."

What happens if you break the law? It's a $500 fine for the first offense, $1,000 for a second offense, and $2,000 for third and subsequent offenses, police said.

"We honor those who have sacrificed their lives during the Memorial Day holiday," said Newtown Police Chief John Hearn. "Let us return the favor while driving a motor vehicle."

The members of the Newtown Police Department had an important message for community members:
  • Multi-tasking is good at times – but NOT when you're driving. Don't use your phone or any other electronic device while driving.
  • Slow down! Speeding gives you less time to react and increases the severity of an accident.
  • Wear your seat belt!
  • Don't operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Arrive safely!
"Memorial Day is always a good predictor of what's to come for summer travel," said Jana Tidwell, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "In the Philadelphia region, nearly 466,000 locals will travel for the holiday, with 424,000 locals (or 91%) going by car, causing delays more than double regular traffic patterns. Though people are overdue for a vacation, safety should remain a top priority. AAA urges those traveling to buckle up, obey the rules of the road, eliminate distractions, and move over for emergency vehicles rescuing stranded motorists at the roadside."
