Bridge Repair, Roadway Construction Continues at Night Next Week on Interstate 476 in Delaware, Montgomery Counties

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction activities will continue at night next week on I-476 and on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) under a $63.7 million project to resurface, repair and improve nearly 17 miles of I-476, the associated on-and-off ramps and bridges from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this resurfacing and bridge repair project, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions; perform repairs on 49 structures; improve 21 stormwater management basins to address existing rock slope stabilization issues; repair existing sound walls; replace inlets at select locations; and install new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage and guiderail.

The purpose of this project is to extend the design life and improve ride quality and safety of the interstate and improve the current condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail and signs that are in poor condition.

H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in late 2025.

PennDOT Highlights Travel, Safety, Community Benefits from New Technologies on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Montgomery County, Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that technology recently installed on a 14-mile section of I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between King of Prussia and Philadelphia is improving safety and traffic flow on the roadway.

PennDOT data shows that crashes, injuries, and travel time have decreased on the corridor since the department installed 72 Variable Speed Limit (VSL) signs and additional electronic message signs supporting a new Queue Warning (QW) system in June 2021. VSL signs display speed limits that are adjusted based on real-time traffic, roadway, and weather conditions. The QW system uses traffic data to update the electronic message signs in real time, alerting motorists about congestion before they reach it so they can slow down and watch for slowed or stopped traffic.

"The active traffic management tools we have invested in on I-76 are saving lives, benefitting the communities they serve by improving air quality, and shortening the ride time for about 100,000 drivers who rely on this critical corridor each day," said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi.

The real-time, responsive technology reduces speed limits as needed, improving motorist safety. Compared to the five-year average from 2015-2019 data (2020 and 2021 data was excluded due to reduced traffic during the pandemic), the average of 2022 and 2023 data shows:

  • Average annual crashes have decreased 22 percent from 568 crashes per year to 444 crashes per year.
  • Average annual rear-end crashes have decreased 32 percent from 380 to 257 per year.
  • Average annual injuries have decreased 20 percent from 413 injuries per year to 330 injuries per year (2022 & 2023).
  • Average annual serious injuries have decreased 62 percent from 6.6 per year to 2.5 per year.
  • PennDOT traffic data shows daily traffic volumes on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) had recovered from pandemic lows by 2021, with the corridor now carrying 10 percent more traffic than it did in 2019.

The overall reduction in crashes is helping to improve traffic flow by keeping more lanes open on a more consistent basis. In 2023, travel time decreased four minutes during the eastbound evening peak travel time (4:00 PM to 7:00 PM) and two minutes during the westbound morning peak travel time (5:00 AM to 9:00 AM) compared to 2019. PennDOT estimates that these results are having a positive economic impact on the community due to fewer crashes and hours of delay in the amount of $46.8 million per year.

Using the Federal Highway Administration's Emissions Calculator, PennDOT analysis shows that reducing stop-and-go traffic conditions is also having a positive impact on overall air quality, reducing emissions by an estimated 3,140 tons annually.

PennDOT encourages all motorists traveling on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to pay attention to the speed limits (between 35 mph and 55 mph in most areas) and queue warning messages that are posted 24 hours a day. In general, a motorist encountering a reduced speed limit should expect to reach slower moving or more congested traffic within a mile to a mile-and-a-half of that reduced speed limit sign. Following the posted speed limit is safer and improves traffic flow. The speed posted on a VSL is the legal speed limit when it is displayed.

The VSL and QW systems were implemented as part of a long-range, comprehensive, multimodal transportation management plan to improve motorist safety and traffic conditions on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the PA Turnpike and U.S. 1. PennDOT continues to monitor the technology's performance and can make any necessary updates to the software's algorithm to further enhance operations.

Additional roadway improvements are currently under design and set for construction in 2026 on the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) corridor. Examples include flexible lane use, emergency pull-off/refuge areas, and multimodal and traffic signal improvements along parallel and some intersecting roadways.

For additional information on PennDOT's I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) improvement program, please visit Transform76.com.

ReadyMontco - Hatboro - PECO Performing Natural Gas Improvements Beginning December 30, 2024 Alert

This is a message from ReadyMontco

PECO will be replacing natural gas equipment including the installation of new underground piping in the area of Warminster Road between Byberry Road and Tanner Avenue beginning December 30, 2024. This work will be taking place Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM through 3:00 PM. PECO is currently expecting work to be completed by February 2025.

While work is taking place, motorists can expect delays on and around Warminster Road. Motorists may want to seek alternative routes to avoid the work area when work is taking place.

This work will be performed by Riggs Distler, a qualified PECO contractor. If you have any questions or to schedule an appointment, please contact John Jester of Riggs Distler at 609-828-8919.

Most of the work will be performed outdoors, but to safely connect your property to the new natural gas main, PECO or a PECO contractor will need to turn off natural gas service and then enter your property to relight your appliances after the connection. PECO will need access to the natural gas appliances or equipment in your home so they can perform this work and later that day to restore service and relight any appliances. At this time, PECO will also be relocating any indoor natural gas meters to the exterior of the building to a location that is above-ground and is as close as practical to the existing indoor location.

This relocation work is necessary for the safety of PECO employees, contractors, customers, and communities and is mandated by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

Prior to work beginning, customers should mark any customer owned facilities present on the property. Examples of customer owned facilities include, but are not limited to, water services, sewer laterals, septic tanks, underground cable, drainage pipe, security lines, private lighting, dog fences, and sprinkler systems.

This work may occur in roadways as well as on sidewalks and potentially on your property. PECO will also work closely with local officials to minimize the impact on traffic and pedestrians whenever possible.

Any areas impacted on your property will be repaired, the streets will be repaved, and all areas will be restored to their original condition.

If you have any other questions about this work and/or would like to provide any supplemental information, please call PECO Work Inquiries (610) 832-6420 or email GasWorkInquiries@exeloncorp.com.

Bridge Deck Repair Planned Monday on Interstate 76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) in Southwest Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that bridge deck repair will occur next week on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Southwest Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

During this operation, all ramps to-and-from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will remain open to traffic; however, there will be a lane close with periodic stoppages on the ramp from Vare Avenue to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).

Motorists are advised to avoid the work area if possible because significant backups will occur. This operation is weather dependent.

The lane closure will allow PennDOT's contractors to patch sections of deteriorated concrete deck on the structures that carry I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) over Reed Street, Wharton Street, and Grays Ferry Avenue, and over the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks.

PennDOT to Host 'REAL ID Day' on Dec. 16 at Granite Run Driver License Center

Media, PA - To help ensure Pennsylvanians are prepared for the upcoming federal REAL ID enforcement deadline of May 7, 2025, PennDOT announced today that it will hold special REAL ID service hours at its Granite Run Driver License Center at 1067 West Baltimore Pike in Media on Dec. 16 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure our customers are prepared for REAL ID enforcement on May 7, 2025," said PennDOT Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services Kara Templeton. "Offering these special hours on a day when the Granite Run center is normally closed gives our customers who may want to get a REAL ID another opportunity to be prepared."

More than 2.5 million Pennsylvanians have chosen to opt into the REAL ID program. Getting a REAL ID is optional in Pennsylvania, but beginning May 7, 2025, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID-compliant license/identification card, or another form of federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to:

  • Board domestic commercial flights.
  • Enter a military base.
  • Enter certain federal facilities that require a federally acceptable form of ID.

If you're not sure whether a REAL ID is right for you, our REAL ID online wizard may be able to help.

Federal REAL ID regulations require that PennDOT must verify the below documents:

  • Proof of Identity: examples include an original or certified copy of a birth certificate filed with the State Office of Vital Records/Statistics with a raised/embossed seal, or a valid, unexpired U.S. Passport.
  • Proof of Social Security Number (proof must display currently legal name and full nine digits of the Social Security Number): examples include a Social Security card, a W-2 form, a SSA-1099 form, a non-SSA-1099 form, or a pay stub.
  • Two Proofs of Current, Physical PA Address: examples include a current, unexpired PA driver's license or identification card, vehicle registration, or a utility bill with the same name and address.
  • Proof of all Legal Name Changes (if current legal name is different than what is reflected on proof of identity document): examples include certified marriage certificate(s) issued by the County Court for each marriage, court order(s) approving a change in legal name, or adoption decree issued by your county's family court.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Note: If current name is the same as what is reflected on the proof of identity document (usually birth certificate or passport), show proof of legal name change does not need to be shown.

More information about REAL ID document requirements can be found on PennDOT's REAL ID website.

When a customer gets their first REAL ID product, they will pay a one-time fee of $30, plus the applicable renewal fee (the current renewal fee is $39.50 for a four-year non-commercial driver's license and $42.50 for a photo ID). The expiration date of their initial REAL ID product will include any time remaining on their existing non-REAL ID product, plus an additional four years, unless the customer is over 65 and has a two-year license. This expiration date structure means that the customer won't lose time that they've already paid for. After the initial REAL ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee beyond regular renewal fees to renew a REAL ID product.

After customers present the proper documentation and pay the applicable fee, customers may obtain a REAL ID-compliant product by:

·       Receiving the product in the mail within 15 days, if application was made at a Driver License Center, such as the Granite Run Driver License Center.

·       Receiving the product over the counter, if application was made at one of PennDOT's 14 REAL ID Centers.

Customers who received their first Pennsylvania driver's license, learner's permit, or photo ID card AFTER September 1, 2003, may already have their REAL ID documentation on file with PennDOT.  These customers can  apply for REAL ID pre-verification and order their REAL ID-compliant product online

For a full list of driver license centers, REAL ID Centers, and services offered, please visit the PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services website at www.dmv.pa.gov and click on Find A Location.

For more information on REAL ID, visit PennDOT.pa.gov/REALID. REAL ID is optional for Pennsylvanians, but will be required for domestic air travel and entry to certain federal facilities after the May 7, 2025, deadline. A passport will still be required for international travel.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
