I-95 Lane Closures Next Week for Bridge, High Mast Light Pole Repair in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA -- Interstate 95 motorists in Philadelphia counties will encounter lane and ramp restrictions next week for bridge and high mast light pole repair under a project to perform high-priority repairs on 13 structures on I-95, Interstate 295 and Interstate 476 in Philadelphia, Bucks and Delaware counties, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule and locations are:

  • Monday, May 9, through Monday, June 13, from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, a weeknight lane closure is scheduled on I-95 in both directions between Broad Street (Route 611) and South Street for bridge repair; and
  • Tuesday, May 10, through Thursday, May 12, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure is scheduled on the ramp from Bartram Avenue to southbound I-95 for high mast light pole repair.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur.

Repairs to the 13 structures include replacing rocker bearings, frozen sliding plate bearings and deck expansion joints; cleaning and painting steel beams; repairing substructure concrete; and reconstructing bearing pedestals.

In addition, the project includes the replacement of 24 high mast light poles along the I-95 corridor in Philadelphia and Delaware counties.

Driscoll Construction Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the $39.4 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Construction is expected to finish in spring 2024.

PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East or West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Construction in Center City Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East or West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Construction in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Alternating closures of either eastbound or westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the vicinity of 30th Street will occur on Monday, May 9, through Thursday, May 12, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for overhead viaduct construction in Center City Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

When eastbound I-76 is closed between 30th Street and South Street, traffic will be directed to use the off-ramp at 30th Street, turn left on Chestnut Street, then turn right on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to eastbound I-76 at Walnut Street.

When westbound I-76 is closed between 30th Street and Interstate 676, I-76 motorists will exit at 30th Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to westbound I-76 at Market Street.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes or allow extra time when traveling through the work area because significant backups and delays will occur. All operations are weather dependent.

The work is part of PennDOT's substantially completed $105.1 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which reopened on Saturday, March 19 — and eight other nearby structures, including the viaducts carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Market Street.

Buckley & Company Inc., of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish this summer.
