New Traffic Pattern on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in East Norriton Township

New Traffic Pattern Planned Next Week on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in East Norriton Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that a new traffic pattern will be in place next week on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) under a $54.3 million project to improve, widen and reconstruct approximately 1.8 miles of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) from Johnson Highway to Swede Road in Norristown and East Norriton and Whitpain townships, Montgomery County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Beginning Wednesday, January 8, through late December 2025, a traffic shift will be place on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in both directions between Colonial Drive and Butchers Lane for roadway reconstruction.

Motorists are advised to allow more time for travel through the work area because backups and slowdowns may occur.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT's contractor will: 

• Reconstruct and widen U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) from the existing two lanes to two lanes northbound, one lane southbound and a center turn lane from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road.
• Install five-foot bicycle lanes in both directions along the entire project area.
• Build new sidewalks at various locations.
• Reconstruct one bridge and one box culvert.
• Construct two sound walls and retaining walls.
• Install new signals, signing and pavement markings.
• Perform drainage improvements.
• Integrate Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve traffic flow.

This project is a critical part of a comprehensive, multi-phase program to reconstruct, widen and improve travel on a 9.1-mile section of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) and selected intersections between Johnson Highway in Norristown and Route 309 in Montgomery Township.

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that inlet repair will be performed on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia under a $37.9 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges in the City of Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Friday, January 3, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a right lane closure will be in place on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the ramp to U.S. 1 North (Exit 340B) and the ramp to Lincoln Drive/Kelly Drive (Exit 340A).

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is scheduled next week on U.S. 422, Sanatoga Road, and Porter Road under an $83.6 million project to reconstruct and improve approximately 2.1 miles of the expressway and replace bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Monday, January 6, and Tuesday, January 7, from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM, intermittent single lane closures will be in place on westbound U.S. 422 between Evergreen Road (Sanatoga Interchange) and Armand Hammer Boulevard for road and bridge reconstruction.
• Monday, January 6, through Friday, January 10, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, intermittent single lane closures with 15-minute traffic stoppages will be in place in both directions on Sanatoga Road between E. High Street and Linfield Road for bridge construction.
• Monday, January 6, through Friday, January 10, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, intermittent single lane closures with 15-minute traffic stoppages will be in place in both directions on Porter Road between E. High Street and Sanatoga Station Road for bridge construction.
• Monday, January 6, and Tuesday, January 7, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, intermittent single lane closures will be in place on eastbound U.S. 422 between Keim Street and Evergreen Road (Sanatoga Interchange) for road and bridge reconstruction.
• Wednesday, January 8, through Friday, January 10, from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM, a right lane closure with intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages will be in place on westbound U.S. 422 between Evergreen Road (Sanatoga Interchange) and Armand Hammer Boulevard for controlled blasting.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Sunday, January 5, from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the westbound I-76 ramp to eastbound I-676 will be closed. During the closure, westbound motorists are directed to use the Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo Interchange and eastbound I-76.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The inspection is part of PennDOT's program to inspect bridges at least once every two years. The inspections ensure the safety and overall condition of the structures.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that base repair is planned on two state highways in Chester County, under multiple ongoing projects to repair and pave more than 200 miles of state highway across the Philadelphia region.

Motorists are advised of travel restrictions on Monday, January 6, through Friday, January 10, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the following locations:

• Edenton Road/Ewing Road/Guernsey Road between Route 896 (Newark Road) and Evergreen Avenue in Upper Oxford, Londonderry, Penn, London Grove townships, and West Grove Borough.
• Daleville Road between Route 926 (Street Road) and Route 10 (Limestone Road) in West Fallowfield and Londonderry townships.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under these resurfacing and improvement projects, PennDOT's contractors are repairing, milling, and repaving state highways with new asphalt pavement that will seal roadways and provide motorists with a safer and smoother riding surface.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that PECO Energy will be performing utility construction on Route 252 (Providence Road) in Media Borough and Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, beginning Monday, January 6, 2025.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Monday, January 6, 2025, through Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Route 252 (Providence Road) will be closed and detoured weekdays between Worrall Street and Locust Lane. During the closure, passenger vehicles will be directed to use Baltimore Avenue, Manchester Avenue, and Wallingford Avenue. Roadway Construction Continues on Business U.S. 322 (High Street) Safety Improvement Project in West Chester Borough, West Goshen Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that roadway construction will continue next week on a project to improve safety at the intersections along the Business U.S. 322 (High Street) corridor in West Chester Borough and West Goshen Township, Chester County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

•  Thursday, January 2, 2025, and Friday, January 3, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure with flagging is scheduled on Business U.S. 322 (High Street) between Rosedale Avenue and Union Street.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near and through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will install new traffic signals at University Avenue and Sharpless Street and provide signal support and related equipment. The project will consist of the installation of retroreflective backplates on existing signals, modern LED luminaries, pedestrian countdown timers at signalized intersections, curb extensions, high-visibility crosswalks, drainage improvements, and comprehensive full-depth pavement restoration, culminating in a complete roadway resurfacing.

Marino Corporation of Skippack, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor on the $2,619,998 project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in winter 2026.

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that roadway construction will continue next week on a project to improve safety at the intersections along the Business U.S. 322 (High Street) corridor in West Chester Borough and West Goshen Township, Chester County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Thursday, December 26, and Friday, December 27, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure with flagging is scheduled on Business U.S. 322 (High Street) between Rosedale Avenue and Union Street.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near and through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will install new traffic signals at University Avenue and Sharpless Street and provide signal support and related equipment. The project will consist of the installation of retroreflective backplates on existing signals, modern LED luminaries, pedestrian countdown timers at signalized intersections, curb extensions, high-visibility crosswalks, drainage improvements, and comprehensive full-depth pavement restoration, culminating in a complete roadway resurfacing.

Marino Corporation of Skippack, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor on the $2,619,998 project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in winter 2026.

King of Prussia PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that bridge inspections are scheduled next week on Interstate I-95 in Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Monday, December 23, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, a right lane closure is scheduled on the northbound I-95 at the Route 611 (Broad Street) Interchange.
• Monday, December 23, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, a right lane closure is scheduled on southbound I-95 at the Route 611 (Broad Street) Interchange.

Bridge Repair, Roadway Construction Continues at Night Next Week on Interstate 476 in Delaware, Montgomery Counties

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction activities will continue at night next week on I-476 and on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) under a $63.7 million project to resurface, repair and improve nearly 17 miles of I-476, the associated on-and-off ramps and bridges from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Thursday, December 26, and Friday, December 27, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on sections of I-476 in both directions between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges for bridge repair, utility construction, and inlet replacement.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this resurfacing and bridge repair project, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions; perform repairs on 49 structures; improve 21 stormwater management basins to address existing rock slope stabilization issues; repair existing sound walls; replace inlets at select locations; and install new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage and guiderail.

The purpose of this project is to extend the design life and improve ride quality and safety of the interstate and improve the current condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail and signs that are in poor condition.

H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in late 2025.

PennDOT Highlights Travel, Safety, Community Benefits from New Technologies on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Montgomery County, Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that technology recently installed on a 14-mile section of I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between King of Prussia and Philadelphia is improving safety and traffic flow on the roadway.

PennDOT data shows that crashes, injuries, and travel time have decreased on the corridor since the department installed 72 Variable Speed Limit (VSL) signs and additional electronic message signs supporting a new Queue Warning (QW) system in June 2021. VSL signs display speed limits that are adjusted based on real-time traffic, roadway, and weather conditions. The QW system uses traffic data to update the electronic message signs in real time, alerting motorists about congestion before they reach it so they can slow down and watch for slowed or stopped traffic.

"The active traffic management tools we have invested in on I-76 are saving lives, benefitting the communities they serve by improving air quality, and shortening the ride time for about 100,000 drivers who rely on this critical corridor each day," said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi.

The real-time, responsive technology reduces speed limits as needed, improving motorist safety. Compared to the five-year average from 2015-2019 data (2020 and 2021 data was excluded due to reduced traffic during the pandemic), the average of 2022 and 2023 data shows:

• Average annual crashes have decreased 22 percent from 568 crashes per year to 444 crashes per year.
• Average annual rear-end crashes have decreased 32 percent from 380 to 257 per year.
• Average annual injuries have decreased 20 percent from 413 injuries per year to 330 injuries per year (2022 & 2023).
• Average annual serious injuries have decreased 62 percent from 6.6 per year to 2.5 per year.
• PennDOT traffic data shows daily traffic volumes on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) had recovered from pandemic lows by 2021, with the corridor now carrying 10 percent more traffic than it did in 2019.

The overall reduction in crashes is helping to improve traffic flow by keeping more lanes open on a more consistent basis. In 2023, travel time decreased four minutes during the eastbound evening peak travel time (4:00 PM to 7:00 PM) and two minutes during the westbound morning peak travel time (5:00 AM to 9:00 AM) compared to 2019. PennDOT estimates that these results are having a positive economic impact on the community due to fewer crashes and hours of delay in the amount of $46.8 million per year.

Using the Federal Highway Administration's Emissions Calculator, PennDOT analysis shows that reducing stop-and-go traffic conditions is also having a positive impact on overall air quality, reducing emissions by an estimated 3,140 tons annually.

PennDOT encourages all motorists traveling on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to pay attention to the speed limits (between 35 mph and 55 mph in most areas) and queue warning messages that are posted 24 hours a day. In general, a motorist encountering a reduced speed limit should expect to reach slower moving or more congested traffic within a mile to a mile-and-a-half of that reduced speed limit sign. Following the posted speed limit is safer and improves traffic flow. The speed posted on a VSL is the legal speed limit when it is displayed.

The VSL and QW systems were implemented as part of a long-range, comprehensive, multimodal transportation management plan to improve motorist safety and traffic conditions on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the PA Turnpike and U.S. 1. PennDOT continues to monitor the technology's performance and can make any necessary updates to the software's algorithm to further enhance operations.

Additional roadway improvements are currently under design and set for construction in 2026 on the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) corridor. Examples include flexible lane use, emergency pull-off/refuge areas, and multimodal and traffic signal improvements along parallel and some intersecting roadways.

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that bridge deck repair will occur on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Southwest Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Tuesday, December 17, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the right lane will close on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the Vare Avenue on-ramp and South Street off-ramp.

During this operation, all ramps to-and-from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will remain open to traffic; however, there will be a lane close with periodic stoppages on the ramp from Vare Avenue to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).

Motorists are advised to avoid the work area if possible because significant backups will occur. This operation is weather dependent.

The lane closure will allow PennDOT's contractors to patch sections of deteriorated concrete deck on the structures that carry I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) over Reed Street, Wharton Street, and Grays Ferry Avenue, and over the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks.

Construction Scheduled Through Winter on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway), Market Street, Bethel Avenue in Upper Chichester Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is scheduled through the winter on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway), Route 452 (Market Street), and Bethel Avenue under a $99.4 million project to reconstruct, widen, and improve travel and safety on a 1.4-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County.

Motorists are advised of periodic lane closures on weekdays beginning on Monday, December 16, through Tuesday, April 1, from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning for temporary roadway widening at the following locations:

• U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) between Cherry Tree Road and the U.S. 322/Route 452 (Market Street) Interchange.

• Bethel Avenue between Dutton Street and U.S. 322/Route 452 (Market Street).

In addition to the nighttime work, daytime lane closures may be in place between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Bethel Avenue between Dutton Street and U.S. 322/Route 452 (Market Street).

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All planned activities are weather dependent.

This project, Section 103, will reconstruct and widen the two-lane section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) to four travel lanes and upgrade traffic signals between Chelsea Parkway/Bethel Avenue and the four-lane section east of Cherry Tree Road.

Section 103 also includes widening to add turn lanes and re-aligning the Cherry Tree/Bethel Avenue intersection; reconstructing the pavement and widening the shoulders of the four-lane, barrier-separated segment of U.S. 322 from east of Cherry Tree Road to approaching the CSX bridge at Bethel Road; and reconstructing and reconfiguring the U.S. 322/Route 452 (Market Street) Interchange, adding turn lanes and ramps from a widened Bethel Avenue.

Section 103 is the second of four construction projects to improve travel and safety by reconstructing and widening to four lanes a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Concord, Bethel, and Upper Chichester townships.

Pedestrian Bridge Replacement Scheduled on Centre Avenue in Newtown Township, Newtown Borough, Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that pedestrian bridge replacement is scheduled on the bridge carrying Centre Avenue over Newtown Creek in Newtown Township and Newtown Borough, Bucks County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:

• Monday, December 30, through Friday, January 17, Centre Avenue will be closed 24/7 between Sycamore Street and State Street. During the closure, motorists are directed to use Sycamore Street, Washing Avenue, and State Street.

Local access will be maintained. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent. 

Masonry repair was previously performed on the bridge this fall following a vehicle bridge strike. Built in 1796, the Centre Avenue bridge over Newtown Creek carries approximately 4,254 vehicles, daily.

Bridge Repair, Roadway Construction Planned Next Week on Interstate 295, U.S. 1 in Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that bridge repair and roadway construction will occur next week on I-295 and U.S. 1 in Middletown Township, Bucks County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Monday, December 16, through Thursday, December 19, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-295 approaching U.S. 1 for bridge repair.
• Monday, December 16, through Thursday, December 19, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a right or left lane closure will be in place on southbound U.S. 1 approaching the I-295 overpass for a traffic shift.
• Tuesday, December 17, through Thursday, December 19, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a right lane closure will be in place on southbound U.S. 1 approaching the I-295 overpass for barrier installation.

Roadway Construction, Bridge Repair Continues at Night Next Week on I-476, I-76 in Delaware, Montgomery Counties

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction activities will continue at night next week on Interstate 476 and on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) under a $63.7 million project to resurface, repair and improve nearly 17 miles of I-476, the associated on-and-off ramps and bridges from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

• Monday, December 16, through Thursday, December 20, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges for tree trimming and guiderail and inlet replacement.
• Monday, December 16, through Thursday, December 20, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between Matsonford Road and I-476 for bridge repair.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this resurfacing and bridge repair project, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions; perform repairs on 49 structures; improve 21 stormwater management basins to address existing rock slope stabilization issues; repair existing sound walls; replace inlets at select locations; and install new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage and guiderail.

The purpose of this project is to extend the design life and improve ride quality and safety of the interstate and improve the current condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail and signs that are in poor condition.

H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction on the project is expected to finish in late 2025.
