Following next week's operation, crews will work on U.S. 422 east from

Daytime travel restrictions are scheduled on northbound Walnut Lane at Park
Line Drive in Philadelphia on Monday, January 11, through Friday, January
15
from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for water main installation, the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. The work is part of
PennDOT's $14.7 million project to rehabilitate the historic Walnut Lane
Bridge
over Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia.
Construction began in November 2015 to improve the Walnut Lane bridge by
removing the existing bridge deck and replacing it with a new concrete
deck.
The plan also includes replacing the existing sidewalk, sidewalk supports
and
balustrade railing, and repairing the support abutments and piers with
formed
concrete to match the architectural line and texture of the existing
abutments
and piers. The existing plaque at the southwest corner of the bridge is
being
maintained, and the damaged plaque at the northeast corner is being
replaced
with a replica plaque. The contractor also is installing new tear-drop
street
lights, and removing the existing temporary structure under the bridge over
Forbidden Drive.
In addition, the contractor is reconstructing the existing roundabout on
Walnut
Lane at the intersection of Park Line Drive to enhance travel and safety.
This
work includes resurfacing the roundabout approaches; installing new
sidewalks;
installing curb ramps; reconstructing and landscaping the center island;
relocating a water main and inlets; and installing new fire hydrants.
The majority of the work is being performed under traffic; however, the
Walnut
Lane bridge is going to be closed and detoured for six months, beginning in
April, to build the new concrete deck, and install new sidewalks. During
the
bridge closure, Walnut Lane through traffic will be detoured over
Wissahickon
Avenue, Midvale Avenue, and Henry Avenue. One sidewalk will be maintained
for
pedestrian traffic during construction.
The six-span Walnut Lane bridge was built in 1907. The concrete arch
structure
is 565 feet long and 60 feet wide. It carries 16,810 vehicles a day.
Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$14,769,654 contractor which is funded with 100 percent federal funds. The
project is expected to finish in August 2017.

Travel restrictions are scheduled the next two weeks for a series of bridge
inspections on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, and U.S. 13 and U.S. 1 in
Bucks
County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today
announced.
Weather permitting, the bridge inspection schedule is:
• On Tuesday, January 12, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the left lane will be
closed
on Interstate 95 north between Broad Street and Packer Avenue in

As Temperatures Drop, Wolf Administration Urges Safe Driving Habits

As temperatures have dropped significantly during the first week of 2016,
the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is highlighting winter
safety laws, and urging drivers to prepare appropriately.
"It's important to remind drivers about winter safety laws, such as
clearing
vehicles of ice and snow, but we also need to promote driver readiness,"
PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. "Drivers who may have been
holding
off due to relatively mild weather should be sure they and their vehicles
are
prepared for the rest of the season."
Richards urged drivers who haven't already done so to get their vehicles
serviced by a mechanic they trust. A properly trained mechanic can check
the
cooling system, battery, hoses, drive belts, tires and wiper blades to
ensure
they are in good condition and functioning properly.
Drivers should also frequently check all fluid levels, lights and wiper
blades.
Tires should be examined often for the correct level of air pressure and
adequate tire-tread depth to perform on ice and snow.
Finally, in advance of winter travel, the traveling public should prepare
or
restock a vehicle emergency kit. The kit should contain items such as
non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket,
cell
phone charger and a small snow shovel. Motorists should tailor their kits
to
any specific needs that they or their families have such as baby supplies,
extra medication and pet supplies.
PennDOT also reminds motorists that their vehicles should be fully clear of
ice
and snow before winter travel. If snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a
moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or
serious bodily injury, the operator of that vehicle could receive a $200 to
$1,000 fine.
When winter weather is occurring, PennDOT asks drivers to be extra cautious
around operating snow-removal equipment. When encountering a plow truck,
drivers should:
•Stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember
that
the main plow is wider than the truck.
•Be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other
traffic.
•When a plow truck is traveling toward you, move as far away from the
center of
the road as is safely possible, and remember that snow can obscure the
actual
snow plow width.
•Never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a
"plow train." The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause
smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles.
•Never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the
operator can't see and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting
drifts or heavy snowpack.
•Keep your lights on to help the operator better see your vehicle. Also
remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every
time a vehicle's wipers are on due to inclement weather.

PECO Energy will use flagging to control traffic on Route 52 (Kennett Pike)
during construction. The work will be completed by the utility company
under a
PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit.

Pavement Repairs Scheduled on I-95 North in Bucks County

A slow-moving daytime operation is scheduled on northbound Interstate 95
between Route 63 (Woodhaven Road) and Route 413 in Bensalem and Middletown
townships, Bucks County, tomorrow, January 5, through Thursday, January 7,
to
repair deteriorated pavement, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT) today announced. The northbound right lane will be closed each
day
from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling north on this
section
of I-95 as the pavement-repair operation could cause delays.
The work will be completed by PennDOT Bucks County maintenance employees.
The
operation is dependent on the weather.
