New I-95 North Ramp at Girard Avenue Interchange to Open Wednesday in
Philadelphia
5/19/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
Northbound Interstate 95 lane and ramp closures are scheduled Tuesday night
for
preparations to open the new northbound off-ramp at the Girard Avenue
Interchange in Philadelphia by Wednesday morning, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
From 10:00 PM Tuesday, May 23, to 5:00 AM Wednesday, May 24, northbound
I-95
will be reduced from three lanes-to-two at the Girard Avenue Interchange,
and
the existing northbound off-ramp will be closed permanently, as crews place
construction barrier and paint new lane markings to create a temporary
approach
from I-95 north to the newly-built off ramp. The new off-ramp, which will
take
motorists to a new, signalized intersection at Richmond Street, is expected
to
be open by 5:00 AM Wednesday.
During the overnight operation, traffic heading for the northbound off-ramp
at
Girard Avenue will be detoured to the off-ramp at Allegheny Avenue, then
right
on Westmoreland Street and right on Allegheny Avenue to access Richmond
Street
and Aramingo Avenue.
Once the new I-95 off-ramp is opened Wednesday morning, work will get
underway
to remove the old off-ramp to Delaware Avenue. Crews will then complete
construction of the new northbound viaduct between the Girard Avenue and
Allegheny Avenue interchanges, which also will include the permanent
approach
to the new off-ramp. Removal of the old ramp also will allow crews to
complete
improvements to Delaware Avenue from Columbia Avenue to Aramingo Avenue.
In addition, on Monday, May 22, through Thursday, May 25, from 9:00 AM to
3:00
PM, the outside lane and shoulder on northbound I-95 will be closed between
the
Bartram Avenue/Route 291 East and Philadelphia International Airport
interchanges for testing and calibration of a newly installed electronic
message sign.
All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The work at the Girard Avenue Interchange is part of PennDOT's $211.7
million
project to rebuild and widen 1.5 miles of northbound I-95 from the Girard
Avenue to the Allegheny Avenue interchanges. The sign work is part of
PennDOT's
initiative to update Intelligent Transportation Systems' (ITS) equipment on
I-95 and other regional highways.
