PennDOT to Reopen Newly Replaced Family Court Pedestrian Bridge over I-676
in Philadelphia

6/22/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will reopen the
newly
replaced Family Court pedestrian bridge over Interstate 676 in Philadelphia
on
Friday morning.

The new span between 18th Street and 19th Street is the first of two
pedestrian
bridges to be completed under PennDOT's $64.8 project to replace seven
deteriorated bridges over I-676 between 18th Street and 22nd Street. The
pedestrian structure, known as the Family Court Bridge for its connection
between Logan Circle and the former Family Court Building, was closed for
construction in September 2015.

The replacement span includes significant enhancements to the public area
that
surrounded the original bridge that was built during construction of the
Vine
Expressway in the 1950s.

Pedestrians entering the new bridge area will find a park-like setting,
with
decorative paver block and exposed aggregate sidewalks winding through a
central area filled with planter boxes of flowers and grasses, decorative
street lighting, ornamental fencing, trees and polished granite park
benches
surrounding a large oval lawn. The refurbished Pennypacker Monument stands
at
the southern entrance to the bridge.

A second new pedestrian bridge over I-676 between 19th Street and 20th
Street,
with expanded and enhanced public space, is scheduled to open later this
month.

Four additional bridges over I-676 remain under construction, including the

Benjamin Franklin Parkway/20th Street, 18th Street, 21st Street and 22nd
Street
bridges. The new 19th Street bridge over I-676 reopened in the spring.

Construction began in April 2015 and will finish in November 2018, a year
ahead
of schedule.

Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
