PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation of Route 232 (Second Street Pike) Bridge in Wrightstown Township, Bucks County

PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation of Route 232 (Second Street Pike) Bridge in
Wrightstown Township, Bucks County

2/14/2018-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that
construction will begin Monday, February 26, to rehabilitate the bridge
carrying Route 232 (Second Street Pike) over a branch of Mill Creek in
Wrightstown Township, Bucks County.

PennDOT's contractor will rehabilitate the stone masonry arch bridge by
removing arch fill material and replacing it with lightweight concrete;
reinforcing the walls and barrier; repointing masonry of the arch barrel
and
support abutments; and replacing guide rail.

Due to the nature of the bridge repairs, Route 232 (Second Street Pike)
will be
closed and detoured between Route 413 (Durham Road) and Cherry Lane during
the
four-month rehabilitation project. Beginning Monday, February 26, through
late
June, Route 232 (Second Street Pike) motorists will be directed to use
Swamp
Road, Worthington Mill Road and Route 413 (Durham Road). Local access will
be
maintained up to the construction zone.

Built in 1852, the one-span structure is 14 feet long, 40 feet wide, and
carries an average of 5,802 vehicles a day. It is currently posted for 30
tons,
and 35 tons for combination vehicles.

The structure is one of nine bridges in Bucks, Chester, Delaware,
Montgomery
and Philadelphia counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,407,987
improvement project financed by Act 89, the state's transportation plan.

The bridges currently under construction include:

• Sugan Road over Cuttalossa Creek in Solebury Township, Bucks County; and
• Old Forty Foot Road over Branch of Skippack Creek in Lower Salford and
Towamencin townships, Montgomery County.

The other structures included in this nine-bridge rehabilitation project
include:

• Hares Hill Road over French Creek in East Pikeland Township, Chester
County;
• Baltimore Pike over Darby Creek in Clifton Heights and Lansdowne boroughs
and
Upper Darby Township, Delaware County;
• State Road/Lansdowne Avenue over Cobbs Creek in Upper Darby Township,
Delaware County, and the City of Philadelphia;
• Wissahickon Avenue over Monoshone Creek in Philadelphia;
• Ridge Pike over Perkiomen Creek in Collegeville Borough and Lower
Providence
Township, Montgomery County; and
• Morwood Road culvert over Branch of Perkiomen Creek in Franconia
Township,
Montgomery County.

Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late summer 2019.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on
the
bridge improvement project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
