Allen Street to Close July 5 for I-95 Ramp Detour Preparation in Port Richmond
King of Prussia, PA — Allen Street between Richmond Street and Allegheny Avenue in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia will close on Friday, July 5, to allow crews to prepare the street for use as the detour route during the upcoming two-year closure of the southbound Interstate 95 ramp to Girard Avenue, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
During the closure of Allen Street, crews will install new signs and a temporary traffic signal at its intersection with Allegheny Avenue. Allen Street will reopen as one-way southbound in late July when the ramp from southbound I-95 to Girard Avenue closes through mid-2021. Allen Street has been a one-way northbound street since it was built by PennDOT in 2015 for use as the detour route when the Richmond Street ramp to northbound I-95 was closed for two years for construction.
When the southbound I-95 ramp to Girard Avenue closes sometime in late July, traffic normally using that ramp will be directed to exit southbound I-95 at Allegheny Avenue, turn left on Allegheny Avenue, right on Allen Street and left on Richmond Street to either Girard Avenue or Aramingo Avenue.
The work is part of the $312 million project currently underway through 2023 to replace the southbound I-95 viaduct between Palmer Street in Fishtown and Ann Street, reconstruct and improve the southbound on and off-ramps at Girard Avenue and rebuild the southbound I-95 pavement between Ann Street and Allegheny Avenue.
