I-76 Restrictions This Weekend in Montgomery County, Lane and Full Closure Next Week in Philadelphia for Viaduct Repairs, Repaving
King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 will be reduced to one lane this Saturday in Montgomery County and closed next weekend in Center City Philadelphia, and westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane during the day next week in Center City, for bridge and viaduct repairs and repaving, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Normal highway and bridge construction projects in Pennsylvania remain paused as part of the commonwealth's efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This project is part of critical work that continues statewide addressing safety needs and work needed to eliminate roadway restrictions that could impede the ability for the movement of life sustaining goods and services.
The work schedule is:
- Saturday, April 25, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between the Conshohocken and Gladwyne interchanges in Montgomery County for repairs to the bridge over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough;
- Monday, April 27, through Wednesday, April 29, from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges in Philadelphia for viaduct rehabilitation;
- Monday, April 27, through Friday, May 1, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a periodic shoulder closure will be in place on westbound I-76 between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges in Philadelphia for concrete placement to repair support columns under the viaduct;
- Friday, May 1, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges at 9:00 PM, then closed completely at 11:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, May 4, for milling and concrete resurfacing; and
- From 11:00 PM Friday, May 1, until 5:00 AM Monday, May 4, the Walnut Street and South Street ramps to eastbound I-76 will be closed and detoured for milling and repaving on I-76.
During next weekend's eastbound closures, I-76 through-traffic will be detoured east on Interstate 676 and south on Interstate 95 back to eastbound I-76. Eastbound local motorists will exit at Spring Garden Street, go west to south on 32nd street, to south on Powelton Avenue, then west on 38th Street to University Avenue and 34th Street to the ramp to I-76 east. Traffic normally using the Walnut Street or South Street on ramps will follow posted detours back to eastbound I-76.
Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur.
The work, which is weather dependent, is being completed under a $39.8 million contract that includes repairs and repaving of the Center City viaduct as well repairs of the three-span bridge over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and several other I-76 structures in Montgomery County.
