PennDOT to Resume Construction for Safety Improvement Project in New Garden Township, Chester County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will resume Tuesday, May 19, on the project to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection of Newark Road and Hillendale Road in New Garden Township, Chester County.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

Due to the nature of repairs, beginning Tuesday, May 19, through late-September, road closures are scheduled 24/7 on the following:

• Newark Road between Daniel Drive and Maple Lane; and
• Hillendale Road between Newark Road and Chambers Road.

During the closure Newark Road motorists will be directed to use Baltimore Pike, Route 41(Gap Newport Pike). Hillendale Road motorists will be directed to use  Chambers Road and Baltimore Pike. Local access will be maintained up to the work zone.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area because backups and delays may occur. The operation is weather dependent.

As part of this project, PennDOT's contractor will work to improve the intersection of Newark Road and Hillendale Road. The scope of work includes adjusting the horizontal and vertical alignments to improve driver sight distance; constructing a left turn lane to facilitate southbound movements from Newark Road onto eastbound Hillendale Road; installing guide rail and single-face barrier; reconstructing two culverts; road widening; and extending a sewer line along Newark Road through the project limits.

Allan A. Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $2.3 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.
