I-95 Nighttime Lane Closures Planned Next Week for Construction at the Bridge Street Interchange in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Northbound and southbound lane closures will be in place at night next week on Interstate 95 between the Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street interchanges in Philadelphia for median construction, the first stage of a $79.7 million project to reconstruct the interstate between Levick and Carver street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Southbound I-95, currently reduced to three lanes in the construction zone, will be reduced to two lanes on Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning as crews complete setting temporary construction barrier and complete other tasks to create a work area in the middle of the interstate.

Northbound I-95 may be reduced periodically from three-lanes to-two on Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM for additional construction activities in the median.

When the barriers are in place, PennDOT's contractor will work to remove the median barrier, pave the median, install drainage, and build crossovers for a long-term traffic pattern that, by late-summer will shift three lanes of northbound and southbound vehicles to the west (southbound) side and middle of I-95 for reconstruction of the northbound lanes three and bridges.

The pattern will be reversed in late 2021 for reconstruction of the southbound lanes and bridges at the northern end of the Bridge Street Interchange.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the I-95 work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

The work at Bridge Street, Section BS1, is the first of two contracts to reconstruct mainline I-95 and the Bridge Street Interchange. The H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the project, which is being funded by 100 percent federal funds. For more information, visit www.95revive.com.
