PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Completes Major Construction on Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike) Bridge Over East Branch Perkiomen Creek

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Completes Major Construction on Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike) Bridge Over East Branch Perkiomen Creek

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that major construction has been completed on the project to replace the bridge that carries Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike) over East Branch Perkiomen Creek in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County. Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike) reopened to two-way traffic between Long Mill Road and Shady Lane earlier today.

The original bridge over East Branch Perkiomen Creek was built in 1930. The new structure is a 100-foot, single-span concrete bulb-tee beam structure supported on new concrete abutments. The roadway on the bridge was widened to carry two 11-foot wide travel lanes and two 5-foot wide shoulders.

The completion of this structure was the last of the three bridges PennDOT replaced under this project. The bridges over the Unami Creek and Ridge Valley Creek were completed and reopened to traffic in December 2019.

In addition to constructing new bridges, additional improvements included modifications to the existing drainage systems at the roadway approaches; and the installation of two permanent traffic signals at the intersection of Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike) and Barndt Road, and at Route 113 (Harleysville Pike) and Salfordville Road.

While major construction has been completed, motorists may encounter intermittent travel restrictions over the coming weeks as PennDOT's contractor performs minor activities.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

H & K Group, Inc., of Skippack, PA is the general contractor on the $9,763,542 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Opens New Ardmore Avenue Bridges in Haverford Township, Delaware County

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Opens New Ardmore Avenue Bridges in Haverford Township, Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reopened Ardmore Avenue between Haverford Road and Golf House Road in Haverford Township, Delaware County, following successful replacement of two bridges that carry Ardmore Avenue over Cobbs Creek and SEPTA's Norristown High-Speed Line.

The closure of Ardmore Avenue in July 2019 was driven by the need to remove both bridges that had been rated in poor condition because of their age, state of deterioration and the lack of adequate shoulders and approaches to the structures. They were replaced with new structures to enhance the safety and operations of the two bridges.

The bridge over Cobbs Creek was built in 1935, and the structure over SEPTA tracks dated back to 1927.

The two new structures provide two 12-foot-wide travel lanes and four-foot-wide shoulders.

The sidewalks on the new bridge over SEPTA tracks remain closed to pedestrians and the temporary bridge remains in place for access to the SEPTA station. Ardmore Avenue motorists may experience temporary travel restrictions in the coming months for the installation of the permanent bridge fencing and ADA ramp railings.

Work on this project is in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $9,867,559 bridge replacement project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Work on this operation will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signing, and relevant training.

While major construction on the original contract is finishing up this month, an additional item of work to repair deteriorated concrete pavement and resurface approximately 900 feet of U.S. 422 just west of the Route 363 (Trooper Road) Interchange will be completed in early 2021. The completion time for this operation will be dependent on the extent of the concrete in need of repair and weather conditions.

Construction on this improvement project began in February 2016 to widen and improve U.S. 422 and replace four Schuylkill River bridges. The new bridges provide a total width of approximately 146 feet, wide enough for eight travel lanes. The structures currently carry six lanes - three eastbound and three westbound. There are two through lanes in each direction plus a third lane on both sides for motorists to use to travel between the Route 363 and Route 23 interchanges. The new bridges are wide enough for the possible addition of a third through lane in each direction sometime in the future.

The scope of work on this improvement project also included:

  • Rebuilding and widening one mile of U.S. 422 between the Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) and Route 363 (Trooper Road) interchanges;
  • Upgrading the Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) Interchange by realigning the eastbound U.S. 422 ramp to Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) and constructing a new fly-over ramp;
  • Improving the Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) ramp to westbound U.S. 422;
  • Replacing the Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) bridge over U.S. 422;
  • Rebuilding 1,500 feet of Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) approaching the U.S. 422 Interchange;
  • Improving the westbound U.S. 422 ramp to Route 363 (Trooper Road) and the Route 363 (Trooper Road) ramp to eastbound U.S. 422; and
  • Widening the eastbound U.S. 422 ramp to First Avenue.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $97.4 million project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East to Close Monday, Tuesday Nights for Viaduct Repairs in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 will be reduced to one lane Monday, December 21, and Tuesday, December 22, at 7:00 PM and then closed at 10:00 PM each night until 5:00 AM the following morning between 30th Street and South Street in Center City Philadelphia for construction on the median barrier and the overhead viaduct, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition, the Walnut Street on-ramp to eastbound I-76 also will be closed Monday, December 21, and Tuesday, December 22, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning during median construction on I-76. Motorists will be directed west on Walnut Street, to left on 38th Street to University Avenue and the ramp to I-76 east at 34th Street.

During the eastbound I-76 closure, motorists will exit at 30th Street, turn right on Market Street, then left on 38th Street to University Avenue and the ramp to I-76 east at 34th Street.

Motorists are reminded that westbound I-76 remains reduced to one lane around-the-clock between University Avenue and 30th Street. The eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp at South Street also remain closed for construction of a new I-76 median barrier. Motorists normally using the closed South Street ramps will follow posted detour signs.

PennDOT is repairing, resurfacing and replacing the median barrier on the I-76 viaduct under a $40 million contract. More information is available at www.i76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Market Street.
