I-76 West to Close, I-76 East One Lane This Weekend for Viaduct Repairs in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 will be closed and eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between University Avenue and Interstate 676 from 12:00 Noon Friday, February 12, to 5:00 PM Saturday, February 13, for removal of construction barrier and line striping, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition, westbound on-ramps at University Avenue, Vare Avenue and South Street also will be closed along with the eastbound on-ramps at Walnut Street and South Street.

The work this weekend, weather permitting, will end the around-the-clock westbound lane closure — in place since last September 14 — between University Avenue and 30th Street by 5:00 PM Saturday, February 13. However, overnight and weekend lane restrictions and closures will continue on I-76 until the viaduct repairs finish this spring.

The eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp at South Street, which remain closed during construction of a new I-76 median barrier, also are scheduled to reopen by 5:00 PM Saturday, February 13.

Weather permitting, the additional I-76 lane and ramp restrictions and locations for next week are:

  • Monday, February 15, through Friday, February 19, westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane at 8:00 PM then closed completely at 10:00 PM between South Street and I-676 for overhead viaduct repairs. During the closure, westbound traffic will exit at 30th Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp back to westbound I-76 at Market Street; and
  • From 12:00 Noon Friday, February 19, to 5:00 AM Monday, February 22, eastbound and westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between University Avenue and I-676 for work on the median barrier. The westbound off ramps at 30th Street and I-676 also will be closed.

Westbound motorists heading for those exits will be detoured west on I-76, exit at Montgomery Drive, and then take the ramp to eastbound I-76 back to I-676 or 30th Street.

When westbound I-76 is closed this weekend, westbound I-76 through motorists coming from New Jersey will be directed to go north on Interstate 95, then west on I-676 to access westbound I-76. Westbound local motorists will exit at University Avenue and follow the posted detours to the ramp to I-76 west. For ramp closures, drivers will follow posted detours.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signing, and relevant training.

PennDOT is repairing, resurfacing, and replacing the median barrier on the I-76 viaduct under a $40 million contract. More information is available at www.i76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the overhead viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is closed until late 2020  — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Market Street.
