An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Henry Avenue Weekday Periodic Lane Closure for Safety Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – A periodic weekday lane closure will continue in both directions on Henry Avenue between Barnes Street and Port Royal Avenue in Philadelphia on Monday, October 3, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, for roadway work under a project to improve travel and safety on a 3.2-mile section of Henry Avenue, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The periodic lane closure will be in place through late November.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will install or upgrade traffic signals at several intersections to include new mast arms, controllers, signal heads, timing optimization, signal interconnectivity and pedestrian countdown timers. Updated traffic signal timing will be implemented at the Walnut Lane intersection and a traffic signal will be installed at the Barnes Street Intersection, as well as a red-light warning flashing signal just north of the Port Royal Intersection.

Additional improvements on Henry Avenue include: New signing and roadway design features through pavement markings; Milling and resurfacing; Median widening; and Guiderail replacement.

To improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on Henry Avenue, improvements include: Extending the southbound restricted parking between Monastery Avenue and Walnut Lane; Eliminating the channelized right turn lanes at the Gates Street and Wigard Avenue intersections; Adding a raised concrete median at Valley Avenue to eliminate left turns; and Lengthening the northbound left turn lane at Livezey Lane.

To enhance pedestrian and bicyclist mobility, the contractor will construct a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path along the east side of Henry Avenue between Barnes Street and Walnut Lane. Other safety enhancements include installing bump-outs at 15 intersections and ADA curb ramps at various intersections along the corridor.

The project will feature the addition of speed calming measures on this section of Henry Avenue that sees an average daily traffic volume of 29,000 vehicles daily. The features include 35 mph pavement markings adjacent to speed limit signs; oversized speed limit signs with orange diamonds; electronic speed feedback signs north of Leverington Avenue and north of Cinnaminson Street; and speed limit signs and hidden driveway signs south of Cinnaminson Street.

The project will also address storm water management through storm drainage, water facility relocation, and green stormwater infrastructure.

During construction, PennDOT will maintain traffic on Henry Avenue by utilizing long-term lane shifts and short-term lane closures.

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on the $12.8 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in late 2023. More information is available at www.Penndot.gov/HenryAvePhilly.

U.S. 1 Lane Closures Next Week for Construction in Bensalem Township

King of Prussia, PA – Lane closures are scheduled on U.S.1 for construction to widen the roadway and replace three bridges in Bensalem and Middletown townships, Bucks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The work schedule and locations are:

  • Monday, October 3, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure is scheduled on southbound U.S. 1 between the Penndel/Business 1 and Neshaminy interchanges for paving. In the event of inclement weather, the lane closure will occur on Tuesday, October 4 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; and
  • Monday, October 3, through Thursday, October 6, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure is scheduled on northbound U.S.1 between the Neshaminy and Penndel/Business 1 interchanges for bridge construction.
Motorists also are reminded that the ramp to southbound U.S.1 from Rockhill Drive remains closed and detoured during bridge construction at the Neshaminy Interchange.

In addition, Old Lincoln Highway between the ramp to U.S.1 south at the Penndel/Business 1 interchange and Bristol Road that had been closed for reconstruction has reopened.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT is reconstructing and widening almost three miles of U.S. 1, improving the interchanges, and constructing several new bridges — including new structures over the Rockhill Drive, the Neshaminy Creek, and over rail lines near the Penndel exit— under two contracts (RC1, RC2) to rebuild, widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County.

JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the general contractor on the $111.5 million Section RC2 project that is scheduled to be completed in mid-2026. Alan Myers Construction, of Worcester, PA, is the general contractor on the $95 million Section RC1 project that will be completed this fall.

PennDOT - District 6 News: PennDOT Completes Congo Road Bridge Replacement, Reopens Highway over Middle Creek in Douglass Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Completes Congo Road Bridge Replacement, Reopens Highway over Middle Creek in Douglass Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reopened the newly built bridge carrying Congo Road over Middle Creek in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, following the completion of a $1.27 million improvement and replacement project.

Work on this project began in November 2021 to replace the existing two-span reinforced concrete slab bridge with a wider, single-span prestressed spread box beam bridge. The new structure accommodates two 11' travel lanes and two 2'4" shoulders. The previous structure was 18' wide curb to curb. A portion of the replacement structure was set aside for a future pedestrian/bicycle trail which Douglass Township expects to construct in the future.

In addition to replacing the structure, PennDOT's contractor installed new guiderail, resurfaced the approach roadways and performed various drainage improvements. A 10' wide pathway was constructed crossing the bridge, which is separated from traffic by a concrete barrier and rail.

H&K Group Inc. of Skippack was the general contractor on this bridge improvement project, which was financed with 80% federal and 20% state funds.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

PennDOT - District 6 News: MacDade Boulevard Lane Closure for Safety Improvement Project in Ridley Township

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

MacDade Boulevard Lane Closure for Safety Improvement Project in Ridley Township

King of Prussia, PA – A left lane closure is scheduled on northbound MacDade Boulevard between Bullens Lane and Fairview Road in Ridley Township, Delaware County, on Monday, September 26, through Friday, September 30, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, for median and pavement work under a project to improve travel and safety on a section of MacDade Boulevard and at the northbound Interstate 476 and MacDade Boulevard Interchange, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will construct a left turn lane on eastbound MacDade Boulevard at the Bullens Lane Intersection to help reduce potential rear-end crashes and improve sight lines for left turning vehicles. Traffic signals will also be modernized, and updated curb ramps will be installed at each quadrant of the intersection to meet current Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements.

In addition, two dynamic message boards will be mounted on steel columns, as well as CCTV cameras installed on traffic signals along MacDade Boulevard between Bullens Lane and Fairview Road to improve connectivity.

The project plan also involves improving the ramp from northbound I-476 to MacDade Boulevard by widening and realigning the westbound ramp where it approaches MacDade Boulevard to form a "T" intersection, where drivers will turn left or right onto MacDade Boulevard at a newly signalized intersection.

To help relieve traffic congestion, auxiliary lanes will be constructed on northbound I-476 within the existing roadway footprint just north of the MacDade Boulevard Interchange and just south of the U.S. 1 Interchange. Guiderail installations are also planned along sections of northbound I-476.

The existing pedestrian bridge over Crum Creek will also be removed and a new pedestrian bridge will be reconstructed with a new alignment adjacent to MacDade Boulevard.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $16.2 million project, which is financed with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in summer 2026.
