U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), Route 29 (Morehall Road) Sinkhole Remediation Project
PennDOT to Begin Construction on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), Route 29 (Morehall Road) Sinkhole Remediation Project in Montgomery, Chester Counties
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, January 13, on a $22.4 million project to provide long-term sinkhole remediation on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, and on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.
Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will utilize a limited mobility grouting program, which will involve drilling a series of holes through the pavement in a "grid" pattern. Pressurized grout will be injected into the drilled holes to fill subsurface voids beneath the roadway. The filling of subsurface voids will help stabilize the ground beneath the pavement and will reduce the risk of future sinkholes. Additional work includes drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.
Beginning, Monday, January 13, motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Monday, January 13, through Friday, January 31, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a weekday right lane closure is scheduled on southbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) between Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard and Ivy Lane for sidewalk reconstruction.
- Monday, January 13, through late February, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, weekday lane closures and shifts are scheduled in both directions on Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange for median removal and sinkhole remediation.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Due to the nature of construction, northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) is aniticapted to close 24/7 in mid-February. When the northbound side reopens, work will shift to southbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) with a southbound 24/7 closure. During each closure, motorists will be directed to use Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road.
In addition, traffic shifts are planned on Route 29 (Morehall Road), while maintaining one lane of traffic in each direction. Temporary traffic signal configurations will be utilized.
Remediation of sinkholes on U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard/Prince Frederick Boulevard and Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Great Valley Parkway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike on-ramp were deemed necessary for a long-term solution following reoccurring sinkholes and emergency repairs resulting in traffic disruptions along both corridors.
The geotechnical analysis for this project incorporated a three-step process, which included ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and test borings to generate a detailed profile of subsurface conditions. This was used to determine the best method of remediation for sinkholes in the project areas.
