PennDOT - District 6 News

PennDOT Highlights Winter Readiness, Paint the Plow Winners at New Bucks County Maintenance Facility

Plumsteadville, PA – With the winter season upon us, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 6 outlined its plans for winter and announced the Philadelphia region's Paint the Plow winners at the new Bucks County maintenance facility in Plumstead Township.

"Whatever the weather brings this winter, PennDOT will be ready," Assistant District Executive for Maintenance John Krafczyk said. "Our crews are well-trained for severe weather events and how to execute preventive measures to lessen the impacts from winter storms.

In anticipation of winter weather, District 6 participates in statewide Web conferences with department staff, weather experts and officials from PEMA, State Police and the Pennsylvania Turnpike to discuss preparations or sharing resources as needed.

District 6 is responsible for over 11,000 snow lanes miles on state highways in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. A snow-lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a one-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal four snow-lane miles.

With $29.6 million budgeted for this winter's operations in the region, the District 6 fleet consists of 181 state snow trucks and 261 private contractor trucks. The number of contractor trucks used for each event is determined by the severity of each storm. The department also has 95 winter municipal agreements in place which cover nearly 3,000 snow lane miles of state highway.

When winter weather hits, PennDOT's primary focus is on interstates, expressways and other major routes. Equipment may be redirected to those highways during significant winter events. If motorists encounter a snowplow on the roadway, they should slow down and drive at least six car lengths behind the plow to ensure safety for everyone. Motorists should never pass a snowplow because plow blades are wider than the truck.

"Our equipment operators have an enormous amount of responsibility during a storm as they plow snow; monitor computers that control the flow of salt; track pavement temperatures; and watch for traffic and possible roadside obstacles," Krafczyk added.

PennDOT recommends that motorists prepare for potential bad weather by carrying an emergency kit in their vehicles. The kit should include non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies, small shovel, cell phone charger and any other items necessary for families to have, such as baby or pet supplies, and medications. For more information on preparing for winter, visit www.PennDOT.gov/winter.

To help raise awareness about the importance of winter driving safety, District 6 held its Paint the Plow contest for the second consecutive year with 13 area high schools participating. The safety theme this year was "Don't Rush in Ice and Slush." District 6 awarded two winners, a "Fan Favorite" that received the most votes online, and a "Judge's Pick" that was selected by a panel of PennDOT employees. The 2019 winners are:

  • "Fan Favorite" - Owen J. Roberts High School in Chester County; and
  • "Judge's Pick" - Ridley High School in Delaware County.

All 13 entries in the Paint the Plow contest will be in service in their respective school's communities during winter weather months to enhance public awareness, promote safety, and foster greater appreciation of both PennDOT and the school's art program.

The winning plows were on display today at the new Bucks County Maintenance facility in Plumstead Township. The recently opened 57,000 square-foot facility includes 10 vehicle service bays, a vehicle wash building, winter material storage building; salt-brine manufacturing building and additional buildings for administration and bridge, sign and paint crews.

PennDOT is actively seeking temporary equipment operators for the winter season to supplement the department's full-time staff. Details on minimum requirements, such as possession of a CDL, as well as application information, are available at www.employment.pa.gov.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com or downloading the 511PA application for iPhone and Android devices. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 950 traffic cameras.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Route 611 (Easton Road) Single Lane Pattern Continues for Bridge Replacement in Durham Township, Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA – Route 611 (Easton Road) will be reduced to a single lane with flagging between Route 212 (Durham Road) and Durham Street in Durham Township, Bucks County 24/7 through June 2020, for construction related to a project to replace the bridge carrying Route 611 (Easton Road) over Cooks Creek, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because slowdowns will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

The work is part of a project to replace the Route 611 (Easton Road) over Cooks Creek with a single-span, pre-stressed, concrete bulb-tee beam bridge. The new structure will be 71 feet long, 50 feet wide and will include eight-foot shoulders.

The project scope also includes the reconstruction of the intersection of Route 611 (Easton Road) and Route 212 (Durham Road); improvements to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' adjacent parking lot; and removal of the previously abandoned, adjacent concrete arch bridge.

Built in 1958, the current bridge carrying Route 611 (Easton Road) over Cooks Creek is 32 feet wide, 72 feet long and carries an average of 5,500 vehicles per day.

PKF-Mark III, of Newton, Bucks County, is the general contractor on the $5,136,221 bridge improvement project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.
