I-76 West to Close at Night Next Week for Construction near 30th Street in Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely overnight next week near 30th Street in Philadelphia for demolition of sections of the concrete deck on the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
On Monday, April 15, through Thursday, April 18, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the South Street and Interstate 676 interchanges.
If necessary, next week's scheduled overnight closings of westbound I-76 will be adjusted to start later than 11 PM to accommodate motorists leaving the sports complex in South Philadelphia following scheduled Phillies and 76ers playoff games.
During the overnight closure, westbound I-76 traffic will exit at 30th Street and continue on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 at Market Street.
The ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street also may close periodically from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM each night during the planned operations. When the ramp is closed, motorists will be detoured west on I-76, east on I-676 to the 22nd Street Exit, north on 22nd Street to the ramp to I-676 west, then east on I-76 to the 30th Street Exit.
In addition, on Monday, April 15, through Wednesday, April 17, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the I-676 and South Street interchanges.
No nighttime eastbound or westbound I-76 lane restrictions will be in place next week or next weekend for construction to rehabilitate the I-76 viaduct between 30th Street and University Avenue.
Motorists are advised to use an alternate route or allow additional time for travel on I-76 near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled closures are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
This work is part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
