I-76 Lane Restrictions, Westbound Full Closure at Night Next Week for Rehabilitation of Two Viaducts in Center City Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Several travel restrictions will be in place next week on eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Center City Philadelphia for construction on the viaduct between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges and on the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Weather permitting, the work schedule is:
- Monday, February 24, through Thursday, February 27, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and Interstate 676 interchanges from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for demolition of the overhead viaduct. During the overnight closure, westbound I-76 traffic will exit at 30th Street and continue on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 at Market Street;
- If any of the weeknight activities are cancelled due to weather, westbound I-76 will be restricted to a single lane at 9:00 PM Friday, February 28, and then closed completely from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM Saturday, February 29; and
- Monday, February 24, through Thursday, February 27, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound or westbound I-76 may be reduced periodically to a single lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for placement of construction zone signs and pavement repairs.
In addition to the scheduled travel restrictions on I-76 in Center City, I-76 will be reduced to a single lane on Monday, February 24, through Thursday, February 27, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM at the following locations in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County for pavement and structure repairs:
- Westbound between the Norristown and King of Prussia interchanges; and
- Eastbound between the King of Prussia and Gulph Mills interchanges.
Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur.
PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.
Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is closed until August 2020 for repairs — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
