U.S. 1, Street Road (Route 132) Lane Closures Next Week for Construction in Bensalem Township

King of Prussia, PA – Daytime and nighttime lane restrictions will be in place on U.S. 1 and Street Road (Route 132) next week for bridge and roadway construction under a project to widen and improve U.S.1 in Bucks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. 

The work schedule is:

• Sunday, October 4, through Saturday, October 10, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday, October 4, through Friday, October 9, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, single lane closures will be in place on northbound or southbound U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway; and
• Sunday, October 4, through Saturday, October 10, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday, October 4, through Friday, October 9, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, single lane closures will be in place on eastbound or westbound Street Road (Route 132) between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.
Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Reconstruction of the middle section along 1.3 miles of U.S. 1 and the middle section of Street Road (Route 132) under the second major stage of the RC1 project are nearing completion. Reconstruction will shift to the southbound side — including construction of the southbound sections of U.S. 1 bridges over Street Road (Route 132), the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Turnpike ramps at the Bensalem Interchange — later this fall.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Crews currently are reconstructing the middle section along 1.3 miles of U.S. 1, and the middle section of Street Road (Route 132) under the second major stage of the RC1 project. Ongoing activities also include construction of the center sections of U.S. 1 bridges over Street Road (Route 132), the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Turnpike ramps at the Bensalem Interchange.

Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $95.1 million project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The project is expected to complete by late 2022. 

This contract (RC1) is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.  For more information, visit www.us1bucks.com.

I-95 Double Lane Closures Scheduled Weeknights for Bridge Painting in the City of Chester

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 95 motorists will encounter a double lane closure in one or both directions between the U.S. 322 and Interstate 476 interchanges in the City of Chester, Delaware County beginning Monday, October 5, for painting under a project to rehabilitate eight bridges over Interstate 95 and CSX Railroad, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The double lane closures will be in place weeknights from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning through Friday, October 16.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling on I-95 through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent and subject to change.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Under this improvement project, PennDOT is rehabilitating the multi-span, steel girder bridges on Potter Street, Madison Street, Upland Street, Melrose Avenue, Chestnut Street, Edgmont Avenue, and the Crosby Street and Walnut Street pedestrian structures. The contractor is also improving the I-95 south exit ramp at Chestnut Street.

PennDOT owns the Edgmont Avenue and Madison Street bridges, and the City of Chester owns the remaining six structures. 

In addition to the bridge and ramp improvements, PennDOT's contractor is repairing Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue from 12th Street to 4th Street; reconstructing curbs and sidewalks; milling and resurfacing the streets; installing a new traffic signal at Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue; upgrading the traffic signal at Morton Avenue and 7th Street; and reconstructing Morton Avenue from 7th Street to 4th Street to lower the road under the Amtrak overpass to increase vertical clearance.   

South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on this project which is financed with 100 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to finish this fall.

U.S. 422 West Lane Closure Next Week for Paving, Sign Installation in Limerick Township

King of Prussia, PA – Westbound U.S. 422 motorists will encounter a single lane closure between Township Line Road and Evergreen Road and at the Limerick and Sanatoga interchanges on Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 AM the following morning for asphalt paving and sign installation under a project to rehabilitate pavement and repair seven structures along a five-mile section of U.S. 422 between the Royersford/Trappe and Sanatoga interchanges in Limerick and Lower Pottsgrove townships, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

In addition, lane restrictions with flagging will occur on Upper Indian Head Road between Cider Mill Road and Winding Ridge Road in Upper Providence Township on Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Under this two-year improvement project, PennDOT's contractor will mill, overlay and rehabilitate existing U.S. 422 pavement; perform bridge deck repairs, concrete and joint patching, sealing and drainage improvements; install new guide rail and rumble strips; and repair or replace damaged traffic signs along the corridor.

H & K Group Inc. of Skippack, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $19.1 million project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in summer 2021. For information, visit www.422improvements.com.

U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Lane Closures at Night Next Week for Viaduct Rehabilitation in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Nighttime left lane closures will be in place in both directions next week on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) for bridge deck construction on the Wayne Junction Viaduct over SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood in North Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. 

The work schedule is:

• Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will be reduced to a single lane between 17th Street and Fox Street; and
• Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will be reduced to a single lane between Fox Street and 17th Street.

Traffic in either direction also may be slowed periodically for equipment repositioning and other activities in the work area during the overnight construction. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) through the work area because slowdowns and backups will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent. 

The contractor is currently rehabilitating and repainting the structural components and placing new concrete pavement on the center section of the half-mile-long viaduct.

Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signing, and relevant training.

South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on the $89.2 million project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The entire project is expected to be completed in late 2022. For more information, visit www.us1wav.com.

U.S. 322 West (Conchester Highway) Lane Closure Next Week for Soil Boring in Upper Chichester Township

King of Prussia, PA — Westbound U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) will be reduced from two lanes-to-one between Interstate 95 and Route 452/Market Street interchanges in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, on Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, for soil borings, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The soil borings are part of the design engineering activities underway for the upcoming U.S. 322 Section CSX project to replace the bridge over Bethel Road and CSX railroad and improve the adjacent interchange. Section CSX, which is scheduled to be under construction in late 2021, is one of four separate contracts that make up PennDOT's U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) improvement project.

This operation will proceed in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work area or to use an alternate route as backups are expected on westbound U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) and its ramps from I-95.

PennDOT began construction in early 2017 on the first-of-three mainline projects (Section 101) to widen and reconstruct U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street) in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, Delaware County.

PennDOT's contractor is currently in the third-and-final stage of construction on the Section 101 project, which is scheduled to be completed in late 2020. 

Design engineering continues on two additional projects (Section 102, 103) that will finish the widening and reconstruction of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway)  from east of Clayton Park Drive through the Route 452 (Market Street) in Bethel and Upper Chichester townships.

PennDOT Honors Star of Excellence Recipients

​King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Yassmin Gramian today recognized 29 PennDOT employees for their outstanding performance with the Star of Excellence Award, PennDOT's highest recognition. Two employees from PennDOT's District 6 which represents Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties were among the honorees.

"These employees exemplify the care and concern needed to serve the state of Pennsylvania," Gramian said. "Each puts effective and efficient transportation services at the top of their list daily, while demonstrating a strong commitment to the agency and roughly 12 million state residents." 

Gramian and other department executives honored winners Eric Lawrence and Hilary Fink during an online ceremony.

"Both Eric and Hilary's work performance show a dedication to PennDOT and our mission to provide sustainable and quality services to our communities," said District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain. They are each a tremendous asset to their respective units, as they are constantly looking for new ways to improve their workflows and continually offering guidance to their fellow employees."

Eric Lawrence is a Maintenance Repairman 2 and an integral member of the Montgomery County Maintenance team. Lawrence's work experience within the paving industry is beneficial to PennDOT's overall success but it's his dedication to safety that has helped ensure the sustainability of the paving program. As an effective mentor, Lawrence imparts his extensive paving knowledge on the Transportation Equipment Operators and thoughtfully provides instruction on the resurfacing process. He consistently stresses the need to be proactive to avoid potential hazards that could affect the well-being of his team and emphasizes to his co-workers the value of knowing the complete details for each piece of equipment. Under his direction, there is no evidence of an accident or violation with any member of his bridge crew or operators conducting snow removal operations. His ability to address bridge damage is a critical component used by the District Bridge Unit to determine the scope of the projects that he and his crew can handle. Through his hard work, he has become one of the county's most influential and respected employees. Lawrence continues to accomplish the most critical maintenance operations and works successfully with other state agencies, local municipalities, area legislators and their constituents.

Hilary Fink as a Roadside Specialist 1 is an enthusiastic worker and invaluable asset to the department. Fink attained Certified Arborist certification to help her assist in all tree-related matters across the district and has been instrumental in keeping the roadside unit aligned with the overall goals of productivity, efficient planning, and cost savings. She has taken the lead in driving a continuous improvement effort by helping to develop methods used to track certain aspects of the roadside unit including contract usage and tree inventory. Specifically, utilizing Maintenance IQ and Geosnap technologies, she helped compile tree inventory on Roosevelt Boulevard. The collected data helped target Ash Trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer and any other dead species for removal, which will result in a cost savings of nearly $100,000. Fink is also often praised for her professional nature. During a recent encounter with high employee turnover in the county roadside positions, Fink continued to perform the duties of the Roadside Technician while performing all of her primary job responsibilities, essentially performing the dual role for over a year. She continues to be an exemplary employee striving to move the department forward.

The Star of Excellence Awards are presented annually to employees who represent the department's values of service, performance and integrity. The recipients represent a variety of organizational positions, spanning from highway maintenance and driver and vehicle services workers, to traffic control specialists, communications staff and design and engineering specialists.

​King of Prussia, PA – Norfolk Southern Railroad is planning to close County Line Road between Heaton Road and Somers Drive in Upper Southampton Township, Bucks County, on Monday, October 5 through Friday, October 9, for railroad crossing improvements, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the 24-hour closure, County Line Road motorists will be detoured over Route 232 (2nd Street Pike), Jaymor Road and James Way.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.
