PennDOT - District 6 News: I-76 East University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange To Close Next Saturday for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

I-76 East University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange To Close Next Saturday for Intersection Improvement Project in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Interstate 76 motorists traveling eastbound will encounter a ramp closure at the University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange in Philadelphia on Saturday, August 7, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, due to a project to improve travel and safety at the University Avenue/34th Street intersection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the University Avenue/Grays Ferry Interchange closure, motorists will be directed to use the 30th Street Interchange, Arch Street, 30th Street, Market Street, and 38th Street. In addition, an alternative detour route offered directs I-76 eastbound motorists to take the Passyunk Avenue/Oregon Avenue Interchange, I-76 West, and the University Avenue Interchange.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and slowdowns may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will realign the intersection, which is listed on the National Highway System and is classified as an "Urban Principal Arterial", through relocating the lane on which exiting I-76 eastbound motorists currently merge onto westbound University Avenue and moving it closer to the ramp's existing signalized intersection with University Avenue/34th Street. This safety improvement will allow the traffic signal to control the right turn onto westbound University Avenue instead of a yield sign. Dual right turn lanes will also be added for this new turning move.

In addition, the contractor will resurface and upgrade traffic signals at the intersection; rebuild ADA curb ramps to improve pedestrian safety; and install new guiderail, drainage, and stormwater management features at this location.

Tony DePaul & Son of Flourtown is the general contractor on this $1,930,228 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is scheduled to finish in fall 2023.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay
warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

PennDOT - District 6 News: More than 80 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

More than 80 Police Departments across Southeast Pennsylvania to Target Aggressive Drivers during Statewide Mobilization

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that more than 80 municipal police departments from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties will join the Pennsylvania State Police in a coordinated aggressive driving enforcement wave to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities on area roadways as part of a statewide mobilization that runs through August 22.

The enforcement wave will focus on red light running, tailgating, pedestrian safety, and heavy truck violations. Motorists exhibiting other aggressive actions or unsafe behaviors such as speeding or distracted driving may also be cited.

Law enforcement will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrol strategies to identify and cite aggressive drivers.

Municipal police agencies that participated in last year's campaign wrote 43,349 citations, including 22,353 for speeding, 1,003 for occupant protection violations, 3,077 for red light violations, and 126 impaired driving arrests.

The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project. It is funded by part of the department's investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:
  • Get out of their way and don't challenge them.
  • Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact, and ignore rude gestures.
  • Don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Rapps Dam Road Covered Bridge Remains Closed in Chester County Due to Structural Damage Caused by Vehicular Crash

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Rapps Dam Road Covered Bridge Remains Closed in Chester County Due to Structural Damage Caused by Vehicular Crash

King of Prussia, PA – The historic Rapps Dam Road Covered Bridge over French Creek in East Pikeland Township, Chester County, is closed indefinitely due to structural damage caused by an oversized vehicle early Saturday morning, July 24, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the bridge closure, motorists are advised to follow the posted detour of Route 113 (Kimberton Road) and Route 23 (Nutt Road/Schuylkill Road).

Bridge engineers are examining the extent of the structural damage and will develop a plan to repair the covered bridge.

The Rapps Dam Road Covered Bridge over French Creek was originally built in 1866 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge is 106 feet long and 14 feet wide. The bridge carried an average of 3,600 vehicles a day.

PennDOT has rehabilitated the historic covered bridge three times since 2011. The most recent repair work finished in April 2018 following a vehicular crash in March 2018.

In fall 2015, PennDOT rehabilitated the historic covered bridge after it was severely damaged by a tractor trailer in April 2014. The contractor restored the Burr Arch truss, installed new ceiling joists and braces, and replaced wooden cross members on the roof.

In fall 2011, PennDOT completed a rehabilitation project on the bridge by removing and replacing its deteriorated cedar shake roof, redwood siding and timber decking. Crews also replaced four steel beams supporting the bridge deck and repaired the structure's stone abutments and wing walls.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) to Close This Weekend for Bridge Construction in Cheltenham, Abington Townships

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) to Close This Weekend for Bridge Construction in Cheltenham, Abington Townships

King of Prussia, PA – Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) is scheduled to close between Willow Grove Avenue and Mount Carmel Avenue in Cheltenham and Abington townships, Montgomery County, from 7:00 PM Friday, July 30, to 5:00 AM Monday, August 2, for bridge construction under a project to rehabilitate the structure that carries Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) over SEPTA's Regional Rail Line, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the weekend closure, Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) motorists will be directed to use Mount Carmel Avenue and Easton Road.

Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

This bridge improvement project was driven by the need to address the bridge deck and superstructure which are both rated in serious condition due to deterioration and severe cracking observed during a recent bridge inspection. The structure, originally built in 1959, has a posted weight limit of 12 tons.

The project consists of removing and replacing the existing bridge superstructure, including concrete railroad protective barriers, parapets and sidewalks. The contractor will also repair the existing abutments and footings, as well as install new approach guiderail, and concrete bridge approach slabs. The approach roadway will be resurfaced approximately 75-feet at each bridge end.

Neshaminy Constructors Inc. of Feasterville, Bucks County is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The entire project is expected to finish this summer.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
