The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has declared a Code Red Air Quality Action Day for Wednesday June 28 due to several ongoing wildfires in eastern Canada.

Concentrations of smoke will continue to increase in the area throughout the day with the highest concentrations in the afternoon hours. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is currently projected for Thursday June 29. You can monitor the air quality in your area here - www.airnow.gov or download the app. Follow recommendations to protect your health based on your personal health risks using this guidance.

 Guidance on limiting exposure

The Montgomery County Office of Public Health recommends residents take precautions to avoid the following health effects from small particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Precautions are based on health risks, and may include:

  •     Limit or avoid time outdoors: Use this guide (Air quality Guide for Particle Pollution - EPA-452/F-23-002 (airnow.gov) to determine the best course of action for you based on your health risks. Guidance for schools and camps can be found here.
  •     Keep indoor air safe: For those who are staying indoors, close windows and if you have air conditioning and your system allows it, consider using the indoor recirculating function and/or installing a high efficiency filter.
  •     Avoid adding pollutants to the air: Avoid indoor and outdoor fires (for example fire pits and grills), frying, or other cooking methods that can generate smoke.

Masking: An N95 can provide some protection, however most masks that many use to help prevent spread of coronavirus will not provide protection due to the size of the pollutants. When air quality levels are unhealthy based on your health risks, limit your exposure by reducing or avoiding outdoor activity.

Potential health effects

People with heart or lung diseases, children, and older adults are most likely to be affected by particle pollution exposure.

Exposure to small particles can affect both your lungs and your heart. Scientific studies have linked particle pollution exposure to a variety of problems, including:

  • Premature death in people with heart or lung disease
  • Non-fatal heart attacks
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Aggravated asthma
  • Decreased lung function
  • Increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.

ReadyMontco - Upper Dublin Alert

This is a message from ReadyMontco

ROAD CLOSURE: Starting Monday, June 12th at 7:00am, Bird Land will be undergoing paving restoration following the completion of the AQUA Water Main Installation Project. Work will take place daily between the hours of 7:00am - 5:00pm for approximately 1-2 weeks (weather dependent). Parking cones will be put in place on Friday, June 9th.

*Milling and paving is estimated to take place on Audubon Drive, Applewood Drive, and Cardinal Drive between Friday, June 12th and Thursday, June 15th. For Thrush Drive, Oriole Lane, and Skylark Lane, work is estimated to take place between Wednesday, June 14th and Friday, June 23.
*Please note: This is a general timeline and is subject to change at the discretion of the contractor.

Residents may leave their vehicles in the driveway but must move any vehicle parked on a street where work is actively taking place. If a resident expects to use their vehicle during the hours of 7:00am - 5:00pm, they are encouraged to park on a different street to avoid accumulation of asphalt onto vehicles and tracking it onto driveways. Contractors will allow vehicles in and out of their homes for emergencies. Non-residents are encouraged to avoid driving or parking in the area all together until the project is complete.

Once paving is finished on each street, the asphalt undergoes a cure process that will take 1-2 hours. It is encouraged that vehicles stay off of the road until the cure process is complete to reduce risk of asphalt transfer onto vehicles or driveways.

Montgomery County Office of Public Health - Air Quality Update 6/9

This is a message from ReadyMontco
Please click here to acknowledge receipt of this message

A Code Orange air quality alert remains in effect for Southeastern Pennsylvania. As of 8am, air quality levels in the region are moderate (51-100) to unhealthy for sensitive groups (101-150).

Air quality levels are forecasted to remain between moderate and unhealthy for sensitive populations throughout the weekend. Continue to monitor the air quality in your area by using www.airnow.gov or the AirNow Mobile App | AirNow.gov. Follow recommendations protecting your health based on your personal health risks using this guidance.

At moderate air quality levels (51-100):

  • Individuals who are unusually sensitive to particle pollution should consider making outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. These are signs to take it easier.
  • All others do not need to take precautions.

At air quality levels that are unhealthy for sensitive populations (101-150):

  • Sensitive groups should make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. It's OK to be active outdoors, but take more breaks. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
  • People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan and keep quick relief medicine handy.
  • People with heart disease should monitor for symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem. If you have any of these, contact your health care provider.
  • All others can go outdoors and open windows if no smoke can be smelled or seen.

Guidance on limiting exposure

The Montgomery County Office of Public Health urges residents to take precautions based on their level of risk or sensitivity to avoid the following health effects from small particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Precautions include:

  • Limit or avoid time outdoors: Use this guide to determine the best course of action for you based on your health risks. For those who are staying indoors, if you have air conditioning and your system allows it, consider using the indoor recirculating function and/or installing a high efficiency filter.
  • Avoid adding pollutants to the air: Avoid indoor and outdoor fires (for example fire pits and grills), frying, or other cooking methods that can generate smoke.
  • Masking: An N95 can provide some protection, however most masks that many of us have to help prevent spread of coronavirus will not provide protection due to the size of the pollutants. When air quality levels are unhealthy based on your health risks, limit your exposure by reducing or avoiding outdoor activity.

Potential health effects

People with heart or lung diseases, children, and older adults are the most likely to be affected by particle pollution exposure.

Exposure to small particles can affect both your lungs and your heart. Numerous scientific studies have linked particle pollution exposure to a variety of problems, including:

  • premature death in people with heart or lung disease
  • nonfatal heart attacks
  • irregular heartbeat
  • aggravated asthma
  • decreased lung function
  • increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.

ReadyMontco - Upper Dublin Alert

This is a message from ReadyMontco

ROAD CLOSURE ALERT: On Friday, June 2nd starting around 12:00pm, Camp Hill Road will be closed for Stage 2 (of 2) of construction which will last for approximately ten (10) days. Stage 2 work will take place on Camp Hill Road between Hellers Way to Virginia Drive.

The alternate route for Stage 2 will direct motorists to turn from Camp Hill Road onto Virginia Drive, Susquehanna Road, and Dreshertown Road. Turns onto Virginia Drive from Camp Hill Road will be temporarily permitted, and the "No Turn" signs will be covered accordingly. Detour signs will be placed to help guide motorists around the closure and will be removed once construction is completed.

Construction is expected to be completed on, or before Monday, June 12th. Construction will include minor widening of Camp Hill Road and two intersection corners to provide better turning radii for the upcoming signalized intersection condition.

Virginia Drive will remain open at all times, and access to the Upper Dublin Police Department and Public Library will remain open from the Virginia Drive, Pinetown Road and Highland Avenue driveways.

Traffic delays are expected during construction and motorists should allow for extra time if traveling in the area or seek an alternate route. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

For more information and a visual of the alternate route, please visit Road Closure: Camp Hill Road Stage 1 & 2 | Upper Dublin Township.

ReadyMontco - Skippack Township Alert

This is a message from ReadyMontco

Chairman Franco D'Angelo and his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors in conjunction with Josh Kratz, Fire Marshal would like to support the recent burn ban that was put into place on Wednesday, May 30.

With recent fire events within our township as well as other municipalities, we feel that having the burn ban in place serves to protect our constituents and properties from injury, damage or worse.

The weather outlook is very dry, with low humidity and just enough of a light breeze to make the ground and ground cover, such as mulch and underbrush, ready to ignite.

The burn ban includes any type of outdoor fire and fireworks of any kind. Please educate your family members to the harm that can be caused if the burn ban is not followed. Thank you.
