New License Plates Help Fund Bicycle Safety Efforts

The new "Share the Road" special fund registration plate designed to help
fund
bicycle safety is now in stock and being shipped to interested vehicle
owners,
PennDOT announced today.
The new plates were authorized by Act 36, referred to as the David (Dave)
Bachman Act, which was enacted in June in memory of a PennDOT employee who
served as the Department's first Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator. All
proceeds
from the sale of the new plate fund PennDOT's bicycle and pedestrian safety
efforts, as well as highway infrastructure signage for bicyclists with the
purpose of wayfinding and/or safety.
The "Share the Road" plate uses the same colors as standard plates -- blue,
white and yellow, with addition of an image of the shared lane marking
including two chevrons, a bicycle silhouette and the words "Allow 4 Feet to
Pass." The bottom of the plate reads "Share the Road."
Applicants may order a plate by completing Form MV-917, "Application for
Share
the Road Registration Plate." The cost of the plate is $40. This plate
may
also be personalized for a fee of $100 in addition to the $40 plate cost.
Customers may also place an order for this plate or learn more about a wide
variety of license plates, including other special fund registration
plates, by
visiting our website at www.dmv.pa.gov and looking under the Vehicle
Services
tab, then clicking on Registration Plates under the drop-down menu.
The plates normally take two to four weeks for delivery. For personalized
plates, allow eight to 10 weeks for delivery.

safety improvements, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

said today. The weekday lane restrictions on Business U.S. 30 (Lincoln
Highway) will be in effect through the end of October.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through this work
area.
The work is part of a $741,000 safety enhancement project to improve

all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in
Harrisburg, will be closed Saturday, September 3, through Monday, September
5,
in observance of Labor Day.
Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and
services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website,
www.dmv.pa.gov.
Driver and vehicle online services are available 24-hours-a-day,
seven-days-a-week and include driver's license, photo ID and vehicle
registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver
license and vehicle registration restoration letters; ability to pay driver

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced
that
repairs are scheduled next week on several roads in the Philadelphia region
over the week for maintenance improvements.
The work scheduled is:
• On Saturday, August 27, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the two right lanes will
be
closed on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Broad Street
(Route
611) and Wissahickon Avenue in Philadelphia, for bridge joint repair;
• On Monday, August 29, and Tuesday, August 30, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
Darlington Road will be closed and detoured between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike)
and
Forge Road in Middletown Township, Delaware County, for the replacement of
a
deteriorated drainage pipe. Vehicles will be detoured over U.S 1 (Baltimore
Pike), Stoney Bank Road, Glen Mills Road/Sweetwater Road, and Valley Road;
• On Tuesday, August 30, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the
eastbound Interstate 76 off ramp to 30th Street and the westbound
Interstate
676 ramp to 30th Street in Philadelphia, will be closed and detoured for
deck
repairs. Eastbound I-76 and westbound I-676 motorists will detour onto I-76
west to Girard Avenue to I-76 east to South Street, to 33rd Street, to
Market
Street to 30th Street in Philadelphia;
• On Tuesday, August 30, and Wednesday, August 31, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM,
one
lane will be closed on the eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 exit ramps
to
University Avenue in Philadelphia for milling;
• On Thursday, September 1, and Friday, September 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
the right lane will be closed on northbound Interstate 95 between Route 132
(Street Road) and Business Route 1 in Bristol and Bensalem townships, Bucks
County, for pavement repair.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these
construction zones.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced
that
repairs are scheduled next week on several roads in the Philadelphia region
over the week for maintenance improvements.
The work scheduled is:
• On Saturday, August 27, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the two right lanes will
be
closed on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Broad Street
(Route
611) and Wissahickon Avenue in Philadelphia, for bridge joint repair;
• On Monday, August 29, and Tuesday, August 30, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
Darlington Road will be closed and detoured between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike)
and
Forge Road in Middletown Township, Delaware County, for the replacement of
a
deteriorated drainage pipe. Vehicles will be detoured over U.S 1 (Baltimore
Pike), Stoney Bank Road, Glen Mills Road/Sweetwater Road, and Valley Road;
• On Tuesday, August 30, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the
eastbound Interstate 76 off ramp to 30th Street and the westbound
Interstate
676 ramp to 30th Street in Philadelphia, will be closed and detoured for
deck
repairs. Eastbound I-76 and westbound I-676 motorists will detour onto I-76
west to Girard Avenue to I-76 east to South Street, to 33rd Street, to
Market
Street to 30th Street in Philadelphia;
• On Tuesday, August 30, and Wednesday, August 31, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM,
one
lane will be closed on the eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 exit ramps
to
University Avenue in Philadelphia for milling;
• On Thursday, September 1, and Friday, September 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
the right lane will be closed on northbound Interstate 95 between Route 132
(Street Road) and Business Route 1 in Bristol and Bensalem townships, Bucks
County, for pavement repair.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these
construction zones.

The operations are associated with contracts underway to improve the ramp
system at the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange and to rebuild

reconstruct and widen more than three miles of I-95 adjoining those
interchanges.
Motorists are advised that no construction-related travel restrictions will
be
in place on I-95 from 5:00 AM Friday, September 2, through 9:00 AM Tuesday,
September 6, for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Walnut Lane will be closed and detoured at Park Line Drive in Philadelphia
beginning Saturday, August 27, for the reconstruction of the roundabout on
Walnut Lane at the intersection of Park Line Drive, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.
The reconstruction of the roundabout will enhance travel and safety by
calming
traffic as it enters and exits the roundabout and providing better
pedestrian
access. This work includes resurfacing the roundabout approaches;
installing
new sidewalks; installing curb ramps; reconstructing and landscaping the
center
island; relocating a water main and inlets; and installing new fire
hydrants.
During construction, northbound Walnut Lane will be detoured over Park
Avenue,
Wissahickon Avenue and Cliveden Street. Southbound motorists will be
detoured
over Cliveden Street and Wissahickon Avenue. Motorists are advised to allow
extra time when traveling through the area.
One sidewalk will remain open on the bridge for pedestrian travel during
construction.
The newly rebuilt roundabout is expected to open in mid-September.
The work is part of PennDOT's $14.7 million project to rehabilitate the
historic Walnut Lane Bridge over Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia.
The Walnut Lane Bridge, which has been closed for construction since April
1,
2016, is scheduled to reopen in late September.
Construction began in November 2015 to rehabilitate the bridge by removing
the
existing bridge deck and replacing it with a new concrete deck. The plan
also
includes replacing the existing sidewalk, sidewalk supports and balustrade
railing, and repairing the support abutments and piers with formed concrete
to
match the architectural line and texture of the existing abutments and
piers.
The existing plaque at the southwest corner of the bridge is being
maintained,
and the damaged plaque at the northeast corner is being replaced with a
replica
plaque. The contractor also is installing new tear-drop street lights, and
removing the existing temporary structure under the bridge over Forbidden
Drive.
The six-span Walnut Lane bridge was built in 1907. The concrete arch
structure
is 565 feet long and 60 feet wide. It carried 16,810 vehicles a day prior
to
its closing.
Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$14,769,654 contractor which is funded with 100 percent federal funds. The
project is expected to finish in August 2017.

Villanova University is planning a single lane closure on eastbound U.S. 30
(Lancaster Avenue) between Route 320 (Spring Mill Road) and Barley Cone
Lane in
Radnor Township, Delaware County, beginning Friday, August 26, for road
widening, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today
announced. The lane closure on eastbound U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) will be
in
effect periodically on Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
through
early December.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through this work
area.

Interstate 676 will be closed and detoured in both directions between the
Interstate 76 and Broad Street (Route 611) interchanges in Philadelphia on
Monday, August 29, through Thursday, September 1, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM
the
following morning for overhead bridge construction, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) said today.
The overnight operation is part of the four-year, $64.8 million project to
replace seven structurally deficient bridges over I-676 between 22nd Street
and
18th Street, and to make landscaping and streetscape improvements above the
expressway. Construction began in April 2015 and will finish in fall 2019.
Crews will work during overnight hours next week to remove a section of the
20th Street bridge over I-676 as part of the multi-stage process to replace
the
structure. The contractor's work schedule is weather dependent.
When I-676 east is closed, the following detours will be in place:
•From I-76 east: Exit at 30th Street/Market Street (Exit 345); right at
Arch
Street; left at 30th Street; left at Market Street; left at 16th Street;
right
at Vine Street to the ramp to I-676 east;
•From I-76 west: Exit at 30th Street (Exit 345); take Schuylkill Avenue to
Market Street; right at Market Street; left at 16th Street; right at Vine
Street to the ramp to I-676 east; and
•Traveling east on Benjamin Franklin Parkway intending to use the 24th

PennDOT announced today that its Fairless Hills Photo License Center
located in
the Deon Square Shopping Center at 514 S. Oxford Valley Road, Fairless
Hills,
Bucks County, will relocate to AAA Mid-Atlantic, 110 Lincoln Highway,
Fairless
Hills.
The last day of operations at the current location will be Saturday, August
27. The center will be open at the new location with AAA on Monday, August
29.
The facility move will save the department nearly $40,000 annually, as AAA
is
providing the facility at no cost to PennDOT. There are 15 additional
co-locations statewide, which amounts to a cost savings of approximately
$600,000 each year.
Hours of operation at the new location are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Friday
and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays;

Construction is expected to begin on Wednesday, August 24 on a $2.2 million
project to repair and resurface nearly 10 miles on four state highways

highways in Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT) today announced.
PennDOT's contractor will mill the existing deteriorated riding surface and
will place new asphalt pavement on Route 724 (Schuylkill Road) to seal the
roadway and provide smoother travel.
This week, crews are scheduled to mill Route 724 (Schuylkill Road) between
the
Berks County line and Whartnaby Street in Coventry Township, Chester
County, on
Wednesday, August 24, and Thursday, August 25, from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the
following morning.
This work on Route 724 (Schuylkill Road) is part of PennDOT's to repair and
resurface four state highways in Chester County, with funding from the
state's
transportation plan, Act 89.
The other three state highways to be milled and paved under this contract
are:

Wolf Administration Announces Investments to Improve 23 Airports

Twenty-three airports will make safety upgrades and expand operation
opportunities with the assistance of $8.8 million in state investments,
Governor Tom Wolf announced today.
"Maintaining and expanding opportunities in our transportation system
includes
the more than 400 airports in our state," Governor Wolf said. "Hundreds of
thousands of jobs are supported by aviation in Pennsylvania, and these
investments will help them operate safely, expand to meet demands, or
attract
more growth."
Included in the grants is $5.4 million distributed through the Aviation
Transportation Assistance Program, which is a capital budget grant program
funded with bonds. The grants leverage nearly $3.6 million in local
matching
funds. Authorized by the General Assembly, the grants are administered by
PennDOT's Bureau of Aviation.
The investments also include $3.4 million in state funding from PennDOT's
Aviation Development Program, which comes from the state's jet fuel tax and
leverages $1.1 million in local matching funds. Public-use airports in the
state are eligible for the Aviation Development Program.
The program complements the state Multimodal Fund, which dedicates $6
million
to aviation in this fiscal year alone. The fund was created by Act 89, a
far-reaching transportation funding program that clears the way for
significant
investments in all transportation modes.

Right lane closures are scheduled on westbound and eastbound U.S. 422
between
the Route 363 (Trooper Road) and U.S. 202 interchanges in Montgomery and
Chester counties, on Wednesday, August 24, through Friday, August 26, from
9:00
AM to 2:30 PM, for roadwork, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT) said today.
PennDOT advises drivers to allow additional time for travel on this section
of
U.S. 422 because slowdowns will occur. The contractor's work schedule is
dependent on the weather.
This work is part of the $97.4 million project to build new, wider bridges
to
improve travel and carry U.S. 422 motorists over the Schuylkill River,
Norfolk
Southern Railroad, South Trooper Road and Schuylkill River Trail in West
Norriton, Upper Merion and Lower Providence townships. The project includes
improving U.S. 422 between the Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) and Route 363
(Trooper Road) interchanges; upgrading Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) at its
interchange with U.S. 422; and improving ramps at the Route 363 (Trooper
Road),
Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) and First Avenue interchanges.
PennDOT began construction on this transportation improvement project in

PM,
Girard Avenue will be closed between Fletcher Street and Richmond Street
for
erection of beams for the new northbound viaduct. Motorists will be
detoured on
Aramingo Avenue and Lehigh Avenue around the closed roadway.
On Monday, August 22, through Friday, August 26, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
lane
restrictions will be in place on southbound Broad Street in the vicinity of
the
stadium complex near Pattison Avenue for installation of Intelligent
Transportation Systems wiring.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work zones.

Southbound Richmond Street motorists will be detoured west on Lehigh Avenue

On Wednesday, August 24, through Friday, August 26, from 6:00 AM to 2:00

Girard Avenue will be closed between Fletcher Street and Richmond Street
for
erection of beams for the new northbound viaduct. Motorists will be

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced
that
lane restrictions are scheduled over the next month on Meyers Road between
Seitz Road and Mill Road in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County,
beginning
Monday, August 22, for utility relocation and excavation. Crews will work
weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, through mid-September.
This preliminary work is part of PennDOT's $11 million project to improve
travel and safety at the intersections of Plank Road/Route 29 (Gravel
Pike)/Otts Road and Meyers Road/Seitz Road/Township Line Road in Skippack,
Perkiomen and Limerick Townships, Montgomery County.
The improvements include widening the intersection of Route 73 (Skippack
Pike)
and Plank Road to include left turn lanes on both roads; relocating Otts
Road
to align with Plank Road at Route 29 (Gravel Pike) to create a four-leg
intersection; adding left turn lanes on Route 29 (Gravel Pike) at Plank
Road/Otts Road; adding left turn lanes on Plank Road and Otts Road at Route
29
(Gravel Pike); realigning Meyers Road to intersect with Township Line Road;
realigning Seitz Road to form a T-intersection with Meyers Road; installing

traffic signals along the project corridor; and improving the roadway

in three locations.
During construction, detours will be in place at times for closures of

Road, Otts Road and Seitz Road. One directional closures will occur on
Route 29
(Gravel Pike). The project's traffic control plan was developed in concert
with
the Route 73 (Skippack Pike) bridge project because Plank Road and Route 29
(Gravel Pike) are part of the Route 73 (Skippack Pike) bridge detour. Route
73
(Skippack Pike) bridge construction began on April 25, 2016, and will
finish in
late December 2016.
H & K Group, Inc., of Skippack, Montgomery County, is the general
contractor on
the $11,292,416 contract that financed with 100 percent funds. The project
is
expected to finish by spring of 2019.

National Park Service and federal, state and local officials to open
Sullivan's
Bridge – the new, four-span, bicycle and pedestrian trail bridge spanning
the
Schuylkill River in Valley Forge National Historical Park (VFNHP).
"Sullivan's Bridge is a wonderful addition to Valley Forge National
Historical
Park and to the region's Circuit Trails network," Richards said. "This new
trail bridge greatly enhances recreational mobility in the park and it
creates
a new multi-use trail connection between the park and the Schuylkill River
Trail."
"We're delighted that this day has come," said VFNHP Superintendent Kate
Hammond. "This month, the National Park Service is observing its 100th
anniversary, and what better way than to open this wonderful bridge that
will
be a linchpin in connecting the park with all the people who use hundreds
of
miles of regional trails."
With its opening, Sullivan's Bridge becomes a critical link in the Circuit
Trails, a vast regional trail network that is composed of hundreds of miles
of
interconnected trails in the region. The bridge's location in VFNHP further
connects the Circuit Trails between Montgomery County and Chester County.
Named for Major General John Sullivan, the officer who was charged by
General
George Washington with building a bridge across the Schuylkill River during
the
1777-78 Valley Forge winter encampment of the Continental Army, the
concrete,
bicycle-and-pedestrian-trail bridge is 14 feet wide and 604 feet long. The
bridge features an observation area where trail users can stop midway to
view
the Schuylkill River and VFNHP. Construction began in March 2014.
Prior to the opening of Sullivan's Bridge, pedestrians and bicyclists
crossed
the Schuylkill River in this area by walking on a narrow boardwalk path on
the
west side of U.S. 422. This path, which was 4 feet, 6 inches wide, opened
in
1994 following the closure of the Old Betzwood Bridge over the Schuylkill
River
in VFNHP. The Old Betzwood Bridge closed in 1993 and was removed in 1995.
In addition to building Sullivan's Bridge on the alignment of the former
Old
Betzwood Bridge, PennDOT's contractor replaced the nearby South Trooper
Road
bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail with a 60-foot long reinforced
concrete
arch structure; rehabilitated the 73-foot long bridge over Norfolk Southern
railroad tracks; replaced the South Trooper Road pavement with a 14-foot
wide
asphalt trail between Station Lane (on the south side of the river) and the
Riverview entrance (on the north side of the river); and rehabilitated
South
Trooper Road to accommodate two 14-foot wide travel lanes between the
Riverview
entrance and Susan Lane.
J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, was the general contractor on
the
$9,271,458 construction project, which was financed with 100 percent
federal
funds.
PennDOT will transfer ownership of the right-of-way and bridges built under
this project to Upper Merion Township and West Norriton Township. Under a
Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), the National Park Service will own and
maintain
Sullivan's Bridge and the adjacent bridge over Norfolk Southern railroad
tracks. West Norriton Township will own South Trooper Road where it's open
to
vehicular traffic north of the Schuylkill River and the South Trooper Road
bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail.
Engineering design of the Sullivan's Bridge project was managed under a
local
agreement between PennDOT and the Upper Merion Transportation Authority, in
close coordination with Upper Merion Township, West Norriton Township and
the
National Park Service.
Sullivan's Bridge is part of the Schuylkill River Crossing Complex of
transportation improvement projects that are designed to enhance
multi-modal
travel on U.S. 422 between the Route 363 (Trooper Road) and Route 23
(Valley
Forge Road) interchanges. In addition to Sullivan's Bridge, the
improvements
include the $97 million project currently under construction to rebuild
U.S.
422 between the two interchanges and build new, wider bridges over the

eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 motorists will face lane closures
next
week for storm drain maintenance operations in Montgomery County.
The work schedule is:
• On Monday, August 22, and Tuesday, August 23, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
the
right lane will be closed on eastbound I-76 between Gulph Mills and U.S. 1
(City Avenue) in Upper Merion and Lower Merion townships and West
Conshohocken
Borough for drainage pipe flushing and storm inlet cleaning;
• On Wednesday, August 24, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the right lane will be
closed on eastbound I-76 between Conshohocken and U.S. 1 (City Avenue) in
Upper
Merion and Lower Merion townships and West Conshohocken Borough for
drainage
pipe inspections;
• On Thursday, August 25, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the right lane will be

eastbound and westbound Interstate 76 motorists will face lane closures
next
week for storm drain maintenance operations in Montgomery County.
The work schedule is:
• On Monday, August 22, and Tuesday, August 23, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
the
right lane will be closed on eastbound I-76 between Gulph Mills and U.S. 1
(City Avenue) in Upper Merion and Lower Merion townships and West
Conshohocken
Borough for drainage pipe flushing and storm inlet cleaning;
• On Wednesday, August 24, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the right lane will be
closed on eastbound I-76 between Conshohocken and U.S. 1 (City Avenue) in
Upper
Merion and Lower Merion townships and West Conshohocken Borough for
drainage
pipe inspections;
• On Thursday, August 25, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the right lane will be

Interstate 676 will be closed and detoured in both directions between the
Interstate 76 and Broad Street (Route 611) interchanges in Philadelphia on
Monday, August 22, through Thursday, August 25, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM
the
following morning for overhead bridge construction, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) said today.
The overnight operation is part of the four-year, $64.8 million project to
replace seven structurally deficient bridges over I-676 between 22nd Street
and
18th Street, and to make landscaping and streetscape improvements above the
expressway. Construction began in April 2015 and will finish in fall 2019.
Crews will work at night next week to remove a section of the 20th Street
bridge over I-676. The contractor's work schedule is weather dependent.
When I-676 east is closed, the following detours will be in place:
•From I-76 east: Exit at 30th Street/Market Street (Exit 345); right at
Arch
Street; left at 30th Street; left at Market Street; left at 16th Street;
right
at Vine Street to the ramp to I-676 east;
•From I-76 west: Exit at 30th Street (Exit 345); take Schuylkill Avenue to
Market Street; right at Market Street; left at 16th Street; right at Vine
Street to the ramp to I-676 east; and
•Traveling east on Benjamin Franklin Parkway intending to use the 24th
Street
on-ramp: Follow Benjamin Franklin Parkway around Logan Circle and bear
right
onto Vine Street east; follow Vine Street to the ramp to I-676 east.
When I-676 west is closed, the following detours will be in place for
passenger
cars and trucks to follow:
•To I-76 East and West: Exit I-676 west at Broad Street (Route 611)

Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$64,836,180 project. Construction is financed with 100 percent federal
funds.
