Northbound 20th Street Traffic Pattern over I-676 to Shift East in
Philadelphia

Northbound 20th Street will be reduced to one lane at the bridge over
Interstate 676 in Philadelphia beginning Tuesday morning, August 16, when
traffic is shifted onto a rebuilt section of the structure over the
interstate,
the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today. This pattern

will be in place through late fall.

This traffic pattern change is part of PennDOT's $64.8 million project to
replace seven structurally deficient bridges over I-676 between 22nd Street
and
18th Street, and to make landscaping and streetscape improvements above the

expressway. Construction began in April 2015 and will finish in fall 2019.

Motorists may encounter lane closures in the vicinity of 20th Street and
the
Benjamin Franklin Parkway starting Monday, August 15 at 9:00 PM as crews
relocate construction barriers, paint traffic lines and complete other
operations to place a single lane of 20th Street traffic onto the recently
completed eastern one-third of the bridge over I-676.

Weather permitting, the new single-lane pattern on 20th Street is expected
to
be in place by 5:00 AM Tuesday, Aug. 16. Traffic on 20th Street will then
have
the option to turn left onto the northbound inner lanes of the Benjamin
Franklin Parkway, continue north on 20th Street, or turn left onto the
northbound outer lanes of the Parkway.

Crews will also relocate the 20th Street pedestrian crossing from the west
side
to the east side of 20th Street, and additional crosswalk revisions will be

made to maintain pedestrian access at Logan Circle between 18th and 20th
streets.

Following the traffic pattern change, PennDOT's contractor will complete
dismantling the middle portion of the expansive 20th Street structure and
modifying the bridge's support abutments to accommodate new bridge beams
and a
new concrete deck. Sidewalks on the north side of Logan Circle adjacent to
the
construction area also will be rebuilt.

Southbound traffic on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will remain in its
current,
two lane configuration over I-676 before merging with a single lane of
Winter
Street traffic onto Logan Circle.

Construction to rebuild the center section of the 20th Street span over
I-676
is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The entire structure
carrying 20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway over I-676 is
scheduled
to be finished in June 2017.

PennDOT's contractor is replacing the seven bridges over I-676 in two major

stages to minimize traffic impacts.

The bridges above I-676 at the former Family Court building, Free Library,
19th
Street, and Benjamin Franklin Parkway/20th Street are the first of seven
structures to be rebuilt under this project. PennDOT's contractor will
replace
the spans carrying 22nd Street, 21st Street, and 18th Street during the
next
major stage of construction.

Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$64,836,180 project. Construction is financed with 100 percent federal
funds.
