Wolf Administration Announces Work to Begin to Rehabilitate Nine Bridges in
Chester and Montgomery Counties
6/30/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Wolf Administration announced today that construction is scheduled to
begin
next month on an improvement project to rehabilitate nine structurally
deficient bridges in Chester and Montgomery counties.
"This rehabilitation project is part of our continued commitment to reduce
the
backlog of structurally deficient bridges across the state," Governor Tom
Wolf
said. "The completion of these bridges will improve the mobility and safety
of
motorists for the next 50 to 75 years."
The first structure to move into construction under this improvement
project
will be the bridge carrying Route 63 (Welsh Road) over Norfolk Southern
Railroad in Upper Dublin and Upper Moreland townships, Montgomery County.
The
work schedule is:
• Thursday, July 6, through Thursday, July 13, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a
weekday lane closure is scheduled on Route 63 (Welsh Road) between Twining
Road
and Computer Avenue, for traffic signal work related to bridge
construction; and
• Thursday, July 13, through the end of construction in late September, a
single lane closure is scheduled in both directions on Route 63 (Welsh
Road)
between Twining Road and Computer Avenue for bridge deck rehabilitation.
In addition to the lane closures, there will be a detour in effect
beginning
Thursday, July 13, through end of construction in late September, for
westbound
Route 63 (Welsh Road) motorists who want to make a left onto Twining Road.
Those travelers will be directed to use Fitzwatertown Road and Susquehanna
Road
to access Twining Road.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area
because slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather
dependent.
The single-span prestressed box beam bridge was built in 1966. It is 82
feet
long and 63 feet wide and carries about 24,749 vehicles a day.
The other bridges included in this rehabilitation project include the
following:
• Old Lancaster Road over Amtrak in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County;
• Boot Road over Route 100 in West Whiteland Township, Chester County;
• Ross Fording Road over Octorara Creek in West Fallowfield Township,
Chester
County;
• Route 611 over Pennypack Creek in Upper Moreland, Montgomery County;
• Route 611 over the Pennsylvania Turnpike ramp in Upper Moreland,
Montgomery
County;
• Quakertown Road over Macoby Creek in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery
County; and
• Linfield Road over Norfolk Southern Railroad in Limerick Township,

County.

6/30/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Wolf Administration announced today that construction is scheduled to
begin
on Thursday, July 6, on a project to improve travel and safety on a
3.4-mile
section of U.S. 1 (Township Line Road) in Upper Darby and Haverford
townships,
Delaware County. The project is scheduled to be completed in August.
"This project specifically addresses the need to improve safety on a busy
stretch of U.S. 1 in Delaware County," Governor Tom Wolf said. "The traffic

reducing speeds and crashes."
Under this improvement project, PennDOT will reconfigure the four-lane
section
of U.S. 1 (Township Line Road) to a five-lane section that includes a
center
turn lane along the corridor; resurface the highway from State Road to
Harding
Drive, narrow lane widths, install radar display speed signs and speed
limit
legends at various locations to help reduce speeds; perform tree and bush
trimming operations along the south side of U.S. 1 (Township Line Road)
between
Blythe Avenue and Belfield Avenue; and install High Friction Surface
Treatment
(HFST) on the northbound right lane of U.S. 1 (Township Line Road) between
State Road and Arrowhead Lane to improve safety.
During construction, there will be periodic lane restrictions through the
work
area during off-peak travel times. The work schedule for next week is:
• Thursday, July 6, and Friday, July 7, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, lane
restrictions are scheduled on U.S. 1 (Township Line Road) between State
Road
and Harding Road for milling operations.

PennDOT Opens New Free Library/Shakespeare Park Bridge over I-676 in Philadelphia
PennDOT Opens New Free Library/Shakespeare Park Bridge over I-676 in
Philadelphia
6/29/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the
new
pedestrian bridge over Interstate 676 between 20th Street and 19th Street
in
Philadelphia, commonly known as the Free Library Bridge or Shakespeare
Park,
opened to the public today.
In addition to replacing the pedestrian bridge linking Logan Square with
Vine
Street, PennDOT expanded Shakespeare Park by covering part of the
previously
opened area over I-676 at the west side of the park. The entire park has
been
hardscaped with paver blocks to create an amphitheater, and landscaped with
a
variety of trees and shrubs. Planter boxes and decorative street lights
line
the new sidewalks along Vine Street on the north side of Logan Square, new
park
benches were installed and the Shakespeare statue was cleaned and
refurbished.
PennDOT also reopened Winter Street today between 21st Street and the
Benjamin
Franklin Parkway following construction of a new intersection with the
eastbound outer lanes of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The contractor
realigned Winter Street along the side of the Franklin Institute to create
a
perpendicular intersection with the Parkway's outer lanes. This improvement
establishes a new plaza along the side of the Franklin Institute that has
been
hardscaped with paver blocks and landscaped with a variety of trees. Park
benches were also installed at the corner of Winter Street and the Parkway,
and
along the Parkway's outer drive between the Parkway and 21st Street.
Last week, PennDOT finished construction on the new pedestrian structure,
known
as the Family Court Bridge between 18th Street and 19th Street. The new
bridge,
which also opened to the public today, features a park-like setting, with
decorative paver block and exposed aggregate sidewalks winding through a
central area filled with planter boxes of flowers and grasses, decorative
street lighting, ornamental fencing, trees and polished granite park
benches
surrounding a large oval lawn. The refurbished Pennypacker Monument stands
at
the southern entrance to the bridge.
The work is part of PennDOT's $64.8 million project to replace seven
structurally deficient bridges over I-676 between 22nd Street and 18th
Street,
and to make landscaping and streetscape improvements above the expressway.
Three additional bridges over I-676 remain under construction, including
18th
Street, 21st Street and 22nd Street bridges. Construction on the entire
project
began in April 2015 and will finish in November 2018, a year ahead of
schedule.
Buckley & Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.

repair
the support abutments, install new sidewalks and make repairs to the
existing
pedestrian stairways.
The one-span, structurally-deficient, steel girder bridge was built in
1947. It
