The ramp from eastbound U.S. 422 to Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) is
scheduled
to close in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, beginning Monday,
February 12, for the start of construction on a new fly-over ramp at that
interchange, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)
announced
today. The ramp closure will be in place through late summer.
During construction, motorists will be directed to continue eastbound on
U.S.
422, exit at First Avenue and make a left on Gulph Road to reach Route 23
(Valley Forge Road). Drivers should allow additional time for travel near
the
construction zone because backups and delays will occur.
The improvements at this interchange are part of a major project to build
new,
wider bridges to carry U.S. 422 motorists over the Schuylkill River,
Norfolk
Southern Railroad, South Trooper Road and Schuylkill River Trail in West
Norriton, Upper Merion and Lower Providence townships.
The scope of work on this project includes improving U.S. 422 between the

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Philadelphia

Department, Uber and AAA Mid-Atlantic held an event today at Chickie's &
Pete's
in South Philadelphia to highlight impaired driving prevention and to
encourage
safe driving on Super Bowl Sunday.
As part of the event, police discussed increased use of roving patrols on
Super
Bowl Sunday to target impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol or
drugs.
Participants also provided Super Bowl party-hosting tips and non-alcoholic
drink options to prevent party-goers from drinking and driving.
According to preliminary PennDOT data, there were 181 crashes in
Pennsylvania
during last year's Super Bowl. Of those crashes, 17 were alcohol-related.
PennDOT reminds Eagles fans that if attending a Super Bowl celebration
involving alcohol it is imperative to designate a sober driver or arrange
for
alternate transportation before kickoff.
"This weekend, we're encouraging all fans in Philadelphia to be a
Designated
Rider: someone who takes responsibility for finding a safe way to get home
after the Big Game," said Craig Ewer, spokesperson for Uber Philadelphia.
"Whether you take a train, a bus, or an Uber, there's never an excuse for
driving under the influence of alcohol."
The Department also encourages football fans to remember the following
safety
tips:
• If hosting a party, offer plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks;
• Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter, and switch to

and dessert;

bridge carrying Holme Avenue over Wooden Bridge Run in Pennypack Park in
Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)
announced
today. The westbound right lane closure will be in place until the bridge
is
completed in June.
PennDOT is rehabilitating the bridge by repairing cracks in the concrete
arch
structure and the headwall beneath the drainage pipe; cleaning debris from
the
stream channel; removing trees that are undermining the abutments and wing
walls; conserving and resetting the bridge plaques; repairing the concrete
pylons; and replacing the balustrade system on the bridge. Once work is
completed, the bridge will no longer be categorized as structurally
deficient.
The one-span concrete arch-deck bridge was built in 1921. It is 86 feet
long
and 80 feet wide and carries an average of 16,611 vehicles a day.
Road-Con Inc. of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on
the
$1,329,212 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Travel restrictions are scheduled next week on several state highways in
Philadelphia for bridge inspections, the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The work schedule is:
• Monday, January 29, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, a left lane closure is
scheduled on southbound Interstate 95 between the Allegheny Avenue and
Interstate 676 interchanges;
• Tuesday, January 30, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, lane restrictions are
scheduled
on northbound Tacony Street between Aramingo Avenue and Bridge Street;
• Tuesday, January 30, and Wednesday, January 31, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
a
left lane closure is scheduled on southbound I-95 between Enterprise Avenue
and
Philadelphia International Airport;
• Wednesday, January 31, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, lane restrictions are
scheduled on southbound Tacony Street between Fraley Street and Aramingo
Avenue;
• Wednesday, January 31, and Friday, February 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM,
lane
restrictions are scheduled in both directions on Walnut Lane between
Wissahickon Avenue and Morris Street;
• Friday, February 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a right lane closure is
scheduled on the ramp from westbound Route 291 (Penrose Avenue) to

• Saturday, February 3, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, a right lane closure is
scheduled on the ramp from westbound Route 291 (Penrose Avenue) to
southbound
I-95; and
• Saturday, February 3, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, a right lane closure is
scheduled in both directions on Whitaker Avenue between Pennway Street and
Loudon Street.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work
areas. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The inspections are part of PennDOT's program to inspect bridges at least
once
every two years to ensure the safety and overall condition of the
structures.

Travel restrictions are scheduled next week on Interstate 95 and Interstate

Lane and ramp closures will be in place next weekend on northbound U.S. 202
between the Boot Road and U.S. 30 interchanges in East Whiteland and West
Whiteland townships, Chester County, to complete a traffic shift on the
northbound bridge over Amtrak, the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation
(PennDOT) announced today.
From 10:00 PM Friday, February 2, to 10:00 AM Saturday, February 3, the
right
lane will be closed on northbound U.S. 202 approaching the work area as
crews
prepare to shift a single lane of northbound traffic onto the rebuilt
inside
half of the bridge Saturday morning. During the operation, a single lane
of
northbound traffic will travel through the work area using the northbound
express lane that has been established on the southbound side of the
expressway.
During the Express Lane traffic shift, northbound U.S. 202 motorists will
not
have access to the exit ramp to U.S. 30. The detour will direct northbound
U.S.
202 motorists to continue to the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) Interchange and
turn right onto Route 401 (Conestoga Road) to reach U.S. 30 (Lancaster
Avenue).
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the
construction area because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is
weather
dependent.
The traffic shift marks the completion of the first stage of rehabilitation
of
the northbound bridge over the Amtrak rail lines at the southern end of the
U.S. 202/U.S. 30 Interchange that began in March 2017. During that stage,
crews
rehabilitated the left side of the northbound structure, cleaning and
refurbishing the steel superstructure and replacing the concrete deck and
parapets.
Following the shift, crews will begin approximately six months of work to
remove the existing concrete deck and parapets; rehabilitate the steel
superstructure; and redeck the outside half of the northbound bridge.
When work on the northbound bridge is completed in mid-2018, a new traffic
pattern will be established in the work zone for rehabilitation of the
southbound bridge. That new pattern will move two lanes of northbound
traffic
onto the northbound bridge and establish a single southbound express lane
on
the northbound structure.
One lane of southbound traffic will then be maintained on the southbound
bridge
while the southbound structure is rehabilitated and redecked a
half-at-a-time.
PennDOT completed replacement of the deteriorated concrete pavement on the
outer lane of the two-lane southbound U.S. 202 ramp to U.S. 30/Exton Bypass
in
December 2017. The concrete pavement on the inner lane of the two-lane
off-ramp
will be replaced at night and on weekends under temporary work zone traffic
patterns beginning in early spring. Those temporary patterns will be
removed
each morning by 5:00 AM to provide motorists two-lanes on the ramp during
peak
travel times.
Deteriorated concrete on the ramp from the eastbound U.S. 30/Exton Bypass
to
northbound U.S. 202 will be replaced beginning this spring.
The work is part of a $26.4 million project to rehabilitate the northbound
and
southbound U.S. 202 bridges over Amtrak and the adjacent U.S. 30 ramp, and
to
remove and replace deteriorated concrete pavement on the U.S. 202 ramps to
and
from the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass.
Allan A Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general
contractor
on the project which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.

U.S. 422 motorists will encounter left and right lane closures in both
directions next week for beam installation as part of a major project to
build
new, wider bridges to improve travel and carry U.S. 422 over the Schuylkill

Lane and ramp closures will be in place at night next week on Interstate 76
between the 30th Street and South Street interchanges in Philadelphia,
including the overnight closures of eastbound I-76 and the westbound I-76
ramp
to 30th Street, for construction on the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue
over
the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street, the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The work schedule is:
• Monday, January 29, through Thursday, February 1, from 9:00 PM to 11:00
PM,
eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane, then closed completely from
11:00
PM to 5:00 AM the following morning between the Interstate 676 and the 30th
Street interchanges. During the overnight closure, eastbound I-76 traffic
will
exit at 30th Street and follow 30th Street to Chestnut Street, then left on

PennDOT is rehabilitating the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill
River
and seven other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill
Avenue
over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut
Street and Market Street.
In addition to repairing and repainting the steel superstructure and
replacing
the deck of the main bridge carrying Chestnut Street over the Schuylkill
River
and the two Schuylkill Avenue structures over I-76, the project also
includes:
• Rehabilitating two structures on the Interstate 76 on-and-off-ramps
between
Chestnut Street and Walnut Street;
• Resurfacing Chestnut Street from 31st Street to 30th Street, and from
24th
Street to 23rd Street;
• Constructing wider sidewalks and installing decorative barrier and
railings
on the Chestnut Street and Schuylkill Avenue bridges;
• Rehabilitating a 900-foot section of the river wall structure between
I-76
and the Schuylkill River from Market Street and Walnut Street;
• Rehabilitating a 15-foot section of the retaining wall supporting the
Schuylkill River Trail under Chestnut Street;
• Installing new traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)
equipment, and street lighting along Chestnut Street between 31st Street
and

• Replacing millennium lighting on Chestnut Street over the Schuylkill
River;
• Constructing a new trellis at the Chestnut Street Trailhead to the
Schuylkill
River Trail;
• Restriping pavement markings for a bicycle lane on Chestnut Street
between
34th Street and 22nd Street; and
• Installing a new clear acrylic barrier along Amtrak Northeast Corridor
tracks
located on the west side of Schuylkill Avenue West between Chestnut Street
and
Walnut Street.
The bridges on Chestnut Street and Schuylkill Avenue West will be under
construction concurrently and will remain open for most of the project.
There
will be various lane and sidewalk restrictions during the three stages of
construction that will require shifts in travel lane and sidewalk
configurations.
Approximately midway through the project, a detour will be in place for
about
one year on Chestnut Street from Schuylkill Avenue West to 23rd Street for
the
rehabilitation of the structurally deficient bridge carrying Chestnut
Street
over the CSX rail lines.
The Schuylkill River Trail will be closed below Chestnut Street for
approximately three months over the winter of 2017-2018 for repairs.
In addition, the on-and-off-ramps at the I-76 Interchange between Chestnut
Street and Walnut Street will be restricted to a single lane of traffic
during

The Wolf Administration announced today that preliminary construction is
underway on a project to replace the three-span bridge carrying Main Street
over Perkiomen Creek in Sellersville Borough, Bucks County.
"This is a key transportation project for this region, one that has been a
long
time in the making," Governor Tom Wolf said. "This is a significant bridge
replacement not just for Sellersville Borough, but for that region of Bucks
County. It is critical to the area businesses as well as those who live and
travel in that area."
Beginning Wednesday, January 24, through mid-February, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
lane restrictions with flagging are scheduled in both directions on Main
Street
between Park Avenue and Elm Street, as crews perform pipe drainage work;
remove
trees; construct an access road; and relocate utilities.
During construction, the bridge will remain open to vehicular and
pedestrian
traffic as the contractor builds the new structure. However, there will be
additional periods of lane restrictions with flagging.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area
because slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather
dependent.
Crews will replace the current bridge with a new two-span, pre-stressed,
concrete bulb-tee beam bridge. The project scope includes the installation
of
eight-foot sidewalks on both sides; resurfacing of the bridge approaches;
and
performing safety upgrades and other miscellaneous construction. The new
structure will be 56 feet wide and 153 feet long.
The current bridge, built in 1940, is 46 feet wide and 128 feet long. The
existing structure is currently posted for 13 tons and 17 tons for
combination
vehicles.

– Nine airports will make safety and equipment upgrades with the assistance
of
nearly $2.4 million in state investments, Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation Secretary Leslie S. Richards announced today.
"Supporting our roughly 400 airports not only keeps goods and people
moving,
but also supports hundreds of thousands of jobs," Richards said. "These
investments ensure safe operations and assist with key upgrades."
The funds are distributed through the Aviation Development Program, which
is
funded by the state's jet fuel tax, and leverage $665,125 in local matching
funds. Public-use airports in the state are eligible for the program.
The program complements the state Multimodal Fund, which dedicates $6.2
million
to aviation in this fiscal year alone. The fund was created by Act 89, a
far-reaching transportation funding program that clears the way for
significant
investments in all transportation modes.
