I-676 to Close Several Overnights Next Week for Median Pier Removal in
Philadelphia
5/9/2018-KING OF PRUSSIA
Interstate 676 will be closed and detoured in both directions between the
Interstate 76 and Broad Street (Route 611) interchanges in Philadelphia on
Monday, May 14, through Thursday, May 17, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the
following morning for cleanup operations, including removal of shielding
and
old median piers from recent construction over the interstate, the
Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The overnight operations are among the final stages of the four-year, $64.8
million project to replace seven structurally deficient bridges over I-676
between 22nd Street and 18th Street, and to make landscaping and
streetscape
improvements above the expressway.
On Friday, May 4, PennDOT reopened the newly replaced 18th Street bridge
over
I-676. Construction activities will continue into this summer to complete
landscaping on the 18th Street span and to finish the tie-in of the I-676
westbound ramp to the 22nd Street bridge. The entire project is expected to
finish later this summer, more than a year ahead of schedule.
During the overnight closures, crews will demolish and remove the remaining
sections of the concrete median piers that supported the original, two-span
overpasses at 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd streets and two pedestrian
bridges over I-676 between 18th and 20th streets. The replacement bridges
are
all single-span structures that do not require center support piers.
Crews will also use the closure to remove protective shielding from the
undersides of the replacement bridges and complete other cleanup activities
in
the work area. I-676 will be resurfaced between 18th and 22nd streets as
part
of the project later this spring.
