I-95 Lane Closures Next Week at Bridge Street, Girard Avenue Interchanges for Construction in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA — Lane closures will be in place on northbound and southbound Interstate 95 at several locations in Philadelphia next week for construction and related activities, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Weather permitting, the I-95 work schedules and locations are:

  • Sunday, March 7, through Wednesday, March 10, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the southbound left and center lane will be closed at the Bridge Street Interchange just south of the work zone between the Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street interchanges for soil borings;
  • Tuesday, March 9, and Wednesday, March 10, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, northbound I-95 will be reduced to one lane in the work zone between the Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue interchanges for installation of shoring for construction of the new northbound bridges over VanKirk and Comly streets;
  • Wednesday, March 10, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the ramp to southbound I-95 at the Girard Avenue Interchange will be closed periodically for activities related a traffic shift on the ramp. During the closures, traffic will be detoured east on Cumberland Street, right on Richmond Street to Delaware Avenue, and right on Callowhill Street and the ramp to southbound I-95; and
  • Thursday, March 11, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, southbound I-95 will be reduced from three lanes-to-two in the work zone between the Allegheny Avenue and Girard Avenue interchanges for median barrier construction. If weather causes postponement, the operation will take place on Friday, March 12.

Drivers are advised to remain alert for slowing traffic when approaching these work areas.

Work on these projects will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, special signage and relevant training.

Construction at Bridge Street is part of PennDOT's $79 million I-95/BS1 project to rebuild I-95 and two bridges at the Bridge Street Interchange. 

The work at Girard Avenue is part of the $312 million project currently underway through 2023 to reconstruct southbound I-95 and the southbound Girard Avenue Interchange.

The soil borings are part of design engineering activities underway for upcoming reconstruction of I-95 at Bridge Street.
