PennDOT Opens U.S. 202 to 6 Lanes between Route 401 and U.S. 30 in Chester
County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation this morning (Aug. 3) opened
2.5
miles of U.S. 202 to six lanes between the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) and
U.S.
30 interchanges in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, substantially
completing construction on a $63.3 million improvement project that began
in
April 2013.

Crews worked Tuesday night, Aug. 2, into this morning to complete line
striping
and other operations for opening the rebuilt and widened expressway by 5:00
AM.
The opening caps several weeks of nighttime activities by the contractor to

complete the installation of the concrete median barrier, removal of
construction barriers, and repainting of traffic lines in the work zone.

Under this second mainline widening contract, PennDOT rebuilt and widened
northbound and southbound U.S. 202 to three lanes in each direction from
just
north of the Route 401 Interchange to approaching the U.S. 30 Interchange;
reconstructed the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) Interchange; rebuilt U.S. 202
bridges over Route 401 and Planebrook Road; installed a culvert to carry
the
Chester Valley Trail under U.S. 202; upgraded the highway drainage system;
and
installed sound walls, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components,
and
new highway signs.

Crews will continue to work and close lanes at night periodically for the
next
several weeks to complete miscellaneous construction activities and
clean-up
operations in the work zone. Allan A. Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery
County, is the general contractor on the $63,381,084 project.

PennDOT utilized two mainline construction contracts for the expansion of
6.5
miles of U.S. 202 to six lanes in East Whiteland and Tredyffrin Townships.
PennDOT opened four miles of U.S. 202 to six lanes from just south of the
Route
252 Interchange to just north of the Route 401 Interchange in September
2014.
Construction on the first mainline contact, worth $105.4 million, began in
April 2011.

Prior to starting construction to widen this section of U.S. 202 in 2011,
PennDOT replaced six overhead bridges under two contracts worth $45 million
to
create space needed to expand the expressway. PennDOT also installed
Intelligent Transportation System equipment along the corridor under a
$14.7
million project.
