Lane Closures Scheduled on U.S. 1 South Over Church Road for Bridge
Rehabilitation in New Garden Township, Chester County

Motorists will encounter lane closures on southbound U.S. 1 between the
Newark
Road and Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) interchanges in New Garden Township,
Chester County, beginning Monday, August 7, as crews continue
rehabilitation of
the structurally-deficient bridge carrying southbound U.S. 1 over Church
Road,
the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
The
lane closures will remain in effect through mid-November.

In addition, periodic weekday lane restrictions with flagging remain in
effect
through mid-October, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, on Church Road between
Sherwood
Drive and Polo Road for construction activities underneath the U.S. 1
bridge.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these
areas
because slowdowns will occur.

As part of the rehabilitation, crews are repairing the existing concrete
bridge
deck using hydro demolition and apply a latex modified concrete overlay;
replacing the expansion joint; replacing the existing bearings; and
repairing
the concrete on the beam ends. The bridge will no longer be structurally
deficient following these repairs.

The bridge carrying southbound U.S. 1 over Church Road was built in 1965.
The
one-span pre-stressed concrete-I beam bridge is 91 feet long, 45 feet wide
and
carries an average of 15,017 vehicles a day.

The structure is one of 10 bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery
counties
that PennDOT is repairing under a $5,505,505 project financed by Act 89,
the
state's transportation plan.

Over the last month, PennDOT's contractor completed and reopened the Spring

Garden Street Bridge over I-76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery
County,
and the bridge carrying Terwood Road over Pennypack Creek in Upper Moreland

Township, Montgomery County.

Crews are also currently rehabilitating the bridge carrying University Road

over U.S. 1 in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County.

The other six bridges included in this rehabilitation project include:

• Thatcher Road over Tohickon Creek in Richland Township, Bucks County;
• Thatcher Road over Dimple Creek in Haycock Township, Bucks County;
• Township Road over U.S. 1 in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County;
• Cowpath Road over Perkiomen Creek in Salford and Franconia townships,
Montgomery County;
• Gypsy Lane over I-76 in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County; and
• Farmington Avenue over Route 100 in Upper Pottsgrove, Montgomery County.

Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in October 2019.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
the project which is financed with 100 percent state funds through Act 89,
Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
