U.S. 1 Daytime Lane Closures Scheduled Next Week for Overhead Bridge
Rehabilitation in Chester County

Right lane closures are scheduled on northbound and southbound U.S. 1
between
the Route 10 (Limestone Road) and Route 896 (Newark Road) interchanges in
Upper
Oxford Township, Chester County, on Monday, August 28, through Thursday,
August
31, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, for rehabilitation of the
structurally-deficient
bridge carrying University Road over U.S. 1, the Pennsylvania Department of

Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The project is expected to be
completed in early September.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the
construction area because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is
weather
dependent.

Due to the nature of the bridge repairs, University Road has been closed
and
detoured during construction between Baltimore Pike and Penns Grove Road.
Motorists are being directed to use Baltimore Pike and Route 896 (Newark
Road).

As part of the rehabilitation, crews are repairing the existing concrete
bridge
deck using hydro demolition and applying a latex modified concrete overlay;

resealing existing deck joints; making minor repairs to the beams and minor

concrete repairs to the substructure; and cleaning existing beam seats. The

bridge will no longer be structurally deficient following these repairs.

The University Road Bridge over U.S. 1 was built in 1968. The four-span
pre-stressed concrete-I beam bridge is 188 feet long, 37 feet wide and
carries
an average of 605 vehicles a day.

The structure is one of 10 bridges in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery
counties
that PennDOT is repairing under a $5,505,505 project financed by Act 89,
the
state's transportation plan.

The Spring Garden Street Bridge over Interstate 76 in West Conshohocken
Borough, Montgomery County, and the Terwood Road bridge over Pennypack
Creek in
Upper Moreland Township, Montgomery County, were the first two structures
to be
completed under this contract.

The bridge carrying U.S. 1 over Church Road in New Garden Township, Chester

County, is currently under construction.

The other six bridges included in this rehabilitation project include:

• Thatcher Road over Tohickon Creek in Richland Township, Bucks County;
• Thatcher Road over Dimple Creek in Haycock Township, Bucks County;
• Township Road over U.S. 1 in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County;
• Cowpath Road over Perkiomen Creek in Salford and Franconia townships,
Montgomery County;
• Gypsy Lane over I-76 in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County; and
• Farmington Avenue over Route 100 in Upper Pottsgrove, Montgomery County.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
the project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in October 2019.
