3/31/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Interstate 676 will be closed in both directions between the Interstate 76
and
Broad Street (Route 611) interchanges in Philadelphia on Monday, April 4,
through Wednesday, April 6, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning
for
overhead bridge construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT) said today.
The overnight operation is part of the four-year, $64.8 million project to
replace seven structurally deficient bridges over I-676 between 22nd Street
and
18th Street, and to make landscaping and streetscape improvements above the
expressway. Construction began in April 2015 and will finish in fall 2019.
Crews will work at night next week to set eight steel beams in place for
the
new structure being built that will carry Benjamin Franklin Parkway/20th
Street
and the Free Library pedestrian bridge over I-676, and cover the opening
above
the interstate between 20th Street and the pedestrian bridge. The
contractor's
work schedule is weather dependent.
Following next week's operation, weeknight closures of I-676 also will
occur
during the weeks of April 11, April 18 and April 25 to set additional steel
beams over the expressway.
When I-676 east is closed, the following detours will be in place:

structures to be rebuilt under this project. PennDOT's contractor will
replace
the spans carrying 22nd Street, 21st Street, and 18th Street during the
next
major stage of construction.
PennDOT's contractor is replacing the seven bridges over I-676 in two major
stages to minimize traffic impacts.

PennDOT Selects Team for Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Stations Public-Private Partnership
PennDOT Selects Team for Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Stations
Public-Private Partnership
3/28/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S.
Richards today announced at a media event that the Trillium CNG team, which
includes Larson Design Group of Williamsport, has been selected for the
department's Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) transit fueling station
Public-Private Partnership (P3) project.
Through the $84.5 million project, Trillium will design, build, finance,
operate and maintain CNG fueling stations at 29 public transit agency sites
through a 20-year P3 agreement. Stations will be constructed over the next
five
years and the firm will also make CNG-related upgrades to existing transit
maintenance facilities.
"The department is excited to partner on this project that will bring
benefits
for the state, our transit partners and the public for years to come,"
Richards
said. "The project's aggressive schedule means that we'll realize cost,
environmental and operational benefits quickly."
As part of Trillium's proposal, CNG fueling will be accessible to the
public at
seven transit agency sites, with the option to add to additional sites in
the
future. PennDOT will receive a 15 percent royalty, excluding taxes, for
each
gallon of fuel sold to the public, which will be used to support the cost
of
the project. The team has guaranteed at least $2.1 million in royalties
over
the term of the agreement.
PennDOT also expects transit agencies and the department to see significant
savings due to the project. Based on current CNG, diesel and gasoline
prices as
well as fuel usage, agencies can save a total of more than $10 million
annually. Due to these expected savings, transit agencies' sustainability
is
increased and dependency on state operational subsidies is reduced. After
10
years, the department estimates that the project will pay for itself with
the
estimated $100 million in savings.
"With Pennsylvania's natural gas resources, this project will not only
bring
efficiencies for transit agencies and the state, but we're also helping
establish a foothold for the CNG transportation market in areas that may
not
have seen this opportunity for some time," Richards said.
Using the P3 procurement mechanism allows PennDOT to install the fueling
stations faster than if a traditional procurement mechanism was used for
each
site, resulting in significant estimated capital cost savings of more than
$46
million.
"This is an exciting day for Pennsylvania as we connect vital citizen
services
with forward-looking infrastructure," said Sen. John Wozniak, Johnstown,
who
participated in the event. "I'm also pleased that this project will start
in
our backyard so this region can quickly reap this partnership's benefits."
When the project is completed, the fueling stations will supply gas to more
than 1,600 CNG buses at transit agencies across the state.
"I'm happy to be working with the administration in fulfilling the natural
gas
promise in making Johnstown the first natural gas public-private
partnership,"
said Rep. Bryan Barbin, Johnstown, who also joined the event.
Today's event was held at the Cambria County Transportation Authority's
Johnstown facility. Trillium CNG, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah,
was
recently acquired by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, Inc. of Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma.

Route 32 (River Road) to Close for Three-Weeks in Tinicum and Plumstead
Townships for Bridge Construction
3/28/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Route 32 (River Road) will be closed and detoured between Walters Lane and
Point Pleasant Pike in Tinicum and Plumstead townships, Bucks County, from
Monday, April 4, through Monday, April 25, for the removal of the temporary
bridge at Point Pleasant, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
(PennDOT) said today.
The three-week closure of Route 32 (River Road) is required to allow
construction crews to safely remove the temporary bridge that was built to
carry vehicles while a new concrete arch bridge was constructed over the
Tohickon Creek. The contractor will also remove the construction platform
and
resurface the roadway approaches to the new bridge.
During the operation, passenger cars using Route 32 will be detoured over
Point
Pleasant Pike, Route 413 (Durham Road), and Dark Hollow Road. Local access
will
be maintained up to the construction zone on either side of the bridge.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area.
The
contractor's schedule is dependent on the weather.
A truck detour around the Route 32 (River Road) bridge construction remains
in
place. This detour, which was instituted February, 2015, takes large trucks
over U.S. 202 and Route 611. The implementation of the truck detour was
necessitated due to the alignment of the road and the temporary bridge.
Following this temporary closure, Route 32 (River Road) will reopen and
motorists will travel on the newly constructed bridge.
Construction began in December 2013 to replace the former two-span,
reinforced
concrete-arch bridge on Route 32 (River Road) with a new two-span, precast,
concrete-arch structure. The new bridge is adorned with an aesthetic stone
finish on the support abutments and wing walls. It is 160 feet long and 37
feet wide. It has two 11-foot travel lanes, a six-foot-wide sidewalk
adjacent
to the northbound travel lane, and three-foot shoulders.
The former bridge was built in 1922. It was 156 feet long, 27 feet wide,
and a
contributing resource to the Point Pleasant Historic District.
Loftus Construction, Inc., of Cinnaminson, N.J., is the general contractor
on
the $5,970,000 project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds. The
project is expected to be completed in late May.
Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including
color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com.
511PA,
which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay
warnings,
weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 700
traffic cameras.
511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and
Android
devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts
accessible

PennDOT to Start $33.5 Million Rehabilitation of Passyunk Avenue Drawbridge in Philadelphia
PennDOT to Start $33.5 Million Rehabilitation of Passyunk Avenue Drawbridge
in Philadelphia
3/28/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will begin construction
Tuesday,
March 29, on a two-year, $33.5 million project to rehabilitate and improve
the
Passyunk Avenue drawbridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The 33-year-old drawbridge will undergo construction to enhance its
mechanical
operation and structural condition. PennDOT's contractor will upgrade the
drawbridge by rehabilitating the motors, brakes, locks and gears, plus the
electrical power, controls, traffic control systems and gates.
Construction crews also will repair and paint structural steel, replace
deteriorated concrete, overlay the bridge deck with latex concrete, replace
expansion joints, reset rocker bearings, repair pedestrian railings, and
clean
and repair the drainage systems.
Initially, the contractor will work Tuesday, March 29, to Friday, April 1,
from
7:00 PM to 5:00 AM to repair drainage pipes on the bridge. This operation
will
require closing the eastbound and westbound right travel lanes on Passyunk
Avenue between 28th Street and 61st Street.
On Monday, April 4, crews will work from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following
morning to build crossover lanes at the approaches to structure and to
shift
two lanes of eastbound and westbound traffic away from the center of the
bridge. The Passyunk Avenue drawbridge will be restricted to two lanes in
each
direction through mid-June while crews work in the median to replace
expansion
joints and resurface a portion of the deteriorated bridge deck.
During later stages of construction, the drawbridge will be restricted to
two
westbound lanes and one eastbound lane.
Currently, the drawbridge carries three westbound and three eastbound
travel
lanes, and two sidewalks. At the end of construction, the bridge will carry
two
westbound and two eastbound travel lanes, two sidewalks, and two
13-foot-wide
shoulders. The reduction in travel lanes resulted from a joint study with
the
City of Philadelphia, which determined that two travel lanes in each
direction
on the drawbridge would be more consistent with the Passyunk Avenue
corridor.
The Passyunk Avenue drawbridge was built in 1983. The steel-girder bridge
has
18-spans, including the one-span drawbridge section. The bridge is 2,240
feet
long and 92 feet wide. It carries an average of 20,800 vehicles a day.
Buckley and Company Inc., of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on the
$33,527,470 project. Construction is expected to finish in late 2018. The
project is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

PennDOT Encourages Motorists to Call 1-800-FIX-ROAD or Go Online to Report Potholes
PennDOT Encourages Motorists to Call 1-800-FIX-ROAD or Go Online to Report
Potholes
3/23/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today reminded
motorists that they can report potholes and other roadway concerns on state
roads by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD or visiting www.dot.state.pa.us and
clicking
on "Submit Roadway Feedback."
"Late winter and early spring are the peak times for potholes to develop,
and
PennDOT crews continue to work aggressively to repair potholes in the
region,"
said PennDOT District Executive Kenneth M. McClain. "We encourage citizens
to
report pothole locations so our crews can repair them as quickly as
possible."
Weather permitting, PennDOT is working daily to repair potholes on state
highways throughout the five-county Philadelphia region. Crews have placed
nearly 3,000 tons of patching material on state roads in the region since
December 1, 2015.
A pothole develops when water seeps below the road through small cracks in
the
pavement surface. As the water repeatedly freezes and thaws due to
temperature
fluctuations, a cavity forms below the surface and larger cracks develop,
which
destroys the strength of the pavement.
Citizens are asked to be as specific as possible when reporting pothole
locations or other maintenance concerns on state routes such as deer
removal or
signing issues. Citizens are asked to report the county, municipality,
street
name and route number, or the state route (SR) number that can be found on
small black and white signs posted along state roadways. Citizens should
also
provide a description of any familiar landmarks that will help PennDOT
locate
the problem area.
Once notified, PennDOT will work expeditiously to address roadway concerns
as
weather permits.
The 1-800-FIX-ROAD number should not be used to report traffic accidents,
disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call
911
to report those types of incidents.
Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by

PennDOT to Resurface Six Miles of U.S. 1 in Chester County
3/22/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 29, to repair and
resurface
nearly six miles of U.S. 1 between Hopewell Road and Route 896 (Newark
Road) in
East Nottingham, Lower Oxford and Upper Oxford townships, the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.
Crews will work Tuesday, March 29 through Saturday, April 2, from 7:00 AM
to
5:00 AM, to mill the left lane on northbound U.S. 1 between Hopewell Road
and
Route 10. Then over the next four weeks, the contractor will work Mondays
through Saturdays from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM to repave the highway.
Construction
is expected to be completed in late April.
PennDOT's contractor will mill the existing deteriorated riding surface and
install a new asphalt pavement on the four-lane expressway to provide
smoother
travel. In addition, crews will repave the ramps at the U.S. 1 interchanges
at
Route 472 and Route 10.
U.S. 1 motorists should allow additional time for travel during
construction
because slowdowns will occur.
The improvement of U.S. 1 is part of PennDOT's $5.2 million project to
repair
and resurface 21 miles of deteriorated pavement on three state highways in
Chester County, with funding from the state's transportation plan, Act 89.
In July 2015, PennDOT's contractor resurfaced Waterloo Avenue between
Sugartown
Road and U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) in Easttown Township. The third state
highway scheduled for resurfacing is Route 10 (Limestone Road/Church
Street/Octorara Trail) between Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and U.S. 30
(Lincoln
Highway). The resurfacing of Route 10 is expected to start in May 2016 and
finish in June 2016.
Allan A. Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general
contractor
on the $5,205,555 project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

through Friday from 7:00 PM to 5:00 the following morning. The $958,376
project
is expected to finish in late May.
Under a separate contract, crews will resurface the deteriorated riding
surface
on 33rd Street between Market Street and 34th Street. The contractor plans
to
mill 33rd Street on Monday, March 28, through Wednesday, March 30, from
7:00 PM
to 5:00 AM, and adjust manholes and drainage inlets on Tuesday, March 29,
through Friday, April 1, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Crews will then continue
to
work to resurface the street in April. Curb ramp construction is expect to
finish in late June. The improvement of 33rd Street is part of a
$13,432,999
state project to repair and resurface 11 state highways in Philadelphia.
Motorists are advised to use extra care and allow additional time for
travel on
both streets during construction because slowdowns will occur when travel
lanes
are restricted.
James J. Anderson Construction Company, Inc. is the general contractor on
the
resurfacing projects, which are financed with 100 percent state funds.

Walnut Lane to Close April 1 in Philadelphia for Bridge Deck Replacement
Walnut Lane to Close April 1 in Philadelphia for Bridge Deck Replacement
3/15/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Walnut Lane bridge over Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia will be
closed
and detoured for five months starting Friday night, April 1 to replace the
existing deteriorated concrete deck and sidewalks, the Pennsylvania
Department
of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. The bridge is expected to
reopen
in early September.
During the bridge closure, Walnut Lane through traffic will be detoured
over
Wissahickon Avenue, Midvale Avenue, and Henry Avenue. One sidewalk will
remain
open on the bridge for pedestrian travel during construction.
This work is part of PennDOT's $14.7 million project to rehabilitate the
historic Walnut Lane Bridge. Construction began in November 2015 to improve
the
bridge by removing the existing bridge deck and replacing it with a new
concrete deck. The plan also includes replacing the existing sidewalk,
sidewalk
supports and balustrade railing; repairing the support abutments and piers
with
formed concrete to match the architectural line and texture of the existing
abutments and piers; maintaining the existing plaque at the southwest
corner of
the bridge; and replacing the damaged plaque at the northeast corner with a
replica plaque. The contractor also is installing new tear-drop street
lights,
and removing the existing temporary structure under the bridge over
Forbidden
Drive.
The improvement plan also includes the reconstruction of the existing
roundabout on Walnut Lane at the intersection of Park Line Drive to enhance
travel and safety. The contractor will resurface the roundabout approaches;
install new sidewalks; install curb ramps; reconstruct and landscape the
center
island; relocate a water main and inlets; and install new fire hydrants.
The six-span Walnut Lane bridge was built in 1907. The concrete arch
structure
is 565 feet long and 60 feet wide. It carries 16,810 vehicles a day.
Buckley and Company, Inc. of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the
$14,769,654 contractor which is funded with 100 percent federal funds. The
project is expected to finish in August 2017.

Initially, U.S. 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one in both
directions on
the nights of Sunday, March 20, to Thursday, March 24, and Sunday, March
27, to
Thursday, March 31. The eastbound lane closure will be in effect each night
from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, and the westbound lane
closure
will be in place from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning.
Crews will work at night through late May to rebuild shoulders on U.S. 422
so
the shoulders can carry vehicular traffic during later stages of
construction.
The contractor's work schedule is dependent on the weather.
The speed limit within the U.S. 422 work zone is reduced to 45 miles per
hour.
Motorists are advised to reduce their travel speeds and be alert of crews
working on the highway.
J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on

PennDOT to Host Open House Public Meeting for Route 926 Bridge Replacement
Project in Chester County
3/15/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will hold an open
house
public meeting on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM for
the
upcoming project to replace the Route 926 (Street Road) bridge over the
Brandywine Creek in Birmingham and Pocopson townships, Chester County.
The public meeting will be held at the Pocopson Elementary School, which is
located at 1105 Pocopson Road in Pocopson Township. The meeting will
feature an
open house plans display, a presentation at 6:30 PM, and a
question-and-answer
session at 7:00 PM. PennDOT project team members will be available to
discuss
the plans with interested citizens.
"We are holding the open house to update and inform citizens in the local
communities on the plan under design to improve the Route 926 crossings
over
the Brandywine Creek and Radley Run, and to provide information on the
recently
completed environmental studies," said PennDOT District Executive Kenneth
M.
McClain.
At the open house, citizens will have the opportunity to circulate among
the
various subject displays to gather information and discuss the different
facets
of the project with PennDOT's project team.
PennDOT plans to improve Route 926 (Street Road) by replacing the
79-year-old
bridge over the Brandywine Creek with a new three-span structure at a
higher
elevation; rebuilding and raising 1,700 feet of the roadway approaches to
make
them less prone to flooding; replacing the nearby culvert over Radley Run;
and
by realigning 800 feet of Creek Road at its northern intersection with
Route
926 (Street Road).
The project is currently in final engineering design and construction is
expected to start in early 2017. Route 926 (Street Road) will be closed and
detoured during construction of the new bridge and culvert.
The existing bridge over the Brandywine Creek was built in 1937 and
rehabilitated in 1974. The four-span, steel I-beam bridge is 190 feet long
and
26 feet wide. The structurally-deficient bridge is posted with a weight
restriction of 26 tons and 33 tons for combination loads. It carries
approximately 13,200 vehicles a day.

The improvement of the Willow Road bridge is part of a $2.3 million project
to
rehabilitate five structurally deficient bridges - four township owned and
one
county owned - in Bucks County. This local bridge improvement project was
enabled through Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.
Willow Road will be closed and detoured between Bustleton Pike and
Buttonwood
Road from Monday, March 28 through June 2016 while crews replace the
deteriorated bridge deck and beams. During construction, Willow Roand
through
traffic will be detoured over Route 232 (Second Street Pike), Tanyard Road
and
Bustleton Pike.
The single-span, prestressed adjacent box beam bridge was built in 1962 and
rehabilitated in 1977. It is 28 feet long and 21 feet wide. It carries 412
vehicles a day. The bridge is posted with an 18-ton weight limit.
In addition to Willow Road, PennDOT's contractor will replace the
superstructures (bridge decks and beams) on the Moyer Road bridge over
Pleasant
Creek in Hilltown Township; Alden Avenue bridge over Rock Run in Falls
Township; and Springfield Street bridge over SEPTA rail tracks in
Springfield
Township. Construction on the county-owned Kansas Road bridge over Little
Neshaminy Creek in Warrington Township began on March 7.
H&K Group, Inc., of Skippack, Montgomery County, is the general contractor
on
the $2,353,598 project. The rehabilitation of the five bridges is expected
to
be completed in late 2016. The project is financed with 100 percent state
funds.
