I-76 West to Close at Night Next Week for Viaduct Demolition near 30th Street in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Westbound Interstate 76 will be reduced to a single lane between the 30th Street and Interstate 676 interchanges from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, on Monday, February 17, to Thursday, February 20, then closed completely each night from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning for demolition of the concrete deck on a section of the viaduct carrying Schuylkill Avenue over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street in Center City Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the overnight closure, westbound I-76 traffic will exit at 30th Street and continue on Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp to westbound I-76 at Market Street.

If any of the weeknight activities are cancelled due to weather, westbound I-76 will be restricted to a single lane at 9:00 PM Friday, February 21, and then closed completely from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM Saturday, February 22.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route or allow additional time for travel on I-76 near the work area because backups and delays will occur.

Next week's scheduled closures of westbound I-76 may be adjusted to start later than 11:00 PM if necessary to accommodate motorists leaving the sports and entertainment complex in South Philadelphia.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is closed until August 2020 for repairs — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
