U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) Travel Restrictions, Traffic Shift Next Week for Completion of Eastbound Widening in Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA - Motorists using U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Concord Township, Delaware County will encounter periodic daytime lane restrictions and intermittent stoppages between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 16, for construction activities to shift traffic onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes just east of Fellowship Drive, marking the completion of Stage 1 construction on the $62.2 million project to widen and improve 2.6 miles of the highway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

The shift will place a lane of eastbound and westbound traffic on the new eastbound pavement between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) and Clayton Park Drive in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, and allow the contractor to expand construction of two new westbound lanes (Stage 2) across the entire mile project area.

Stage 2 construction began at the western end of the project in early 2019 after traffic was moved onto the new eastbound pavement between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) and Fellowship Drive in January.

Once traffic has been shifted into the new pattern by Wednesday afternoon, previously closed intersections with Station Road North, Station Road South and Merion Drive will be reopened. The intersections have been closed for reconstruction to tie them into the new eastbound lanes.
Periodic lane restrictions and brief stoppages also may take place in the work zone on Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for the remainder of construction.

Motorists should expect delays on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway), allow extra time for travel through the work areas, or use an alternate route. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Stage 1 construction to build two new eastbound lanes, construct eastbound sound walls, install segments of the project's extensive stormwater management system and improve the eastbound side of nine intersections in the work zone began in spring 2017.

Current construction, Section 101, is the first-of-two mainline projects to widen and reconstruct a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street).  Stage 2 construction is expected finish in late 2020, completing the entire Section 101 project.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Engineering design is advancing for the widening and reconstruction of the eastern section (Section 102) of the highway from just east of Clayton Park Drive to just east of Route 452 (Market Street). Construction on this section is expected to start in late 2020.

An additional contract to replace the U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) bridge over the CSX railroad and Bethel Road as well as improvements to the adjacent Bethel Road Interchange is under design.
