Girard Avenue Interchange Ramp to I-95 North Reopens Next Week in Philadelphia

Girard Avenue Interchange Ramp to I-95 North Reopens Next Week in
Philadelphia

10/10/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that it
will open the new ramp from Richmond Street at the Girard Avenue
Interchange to
northbound Interstate 95 in Philadelphia late Tuesday afternoon, October
17.
The ramp had been closed since December 2015.

The ramp opening substantially completes construction of a new northbound
Girard Avenue Interchange that was built as part of the $212 million
project to
replace the viaduct. The mile-long, 49-span structure, under construction
since
mid-2015, carries I-95 over parts of the Fishtown and Port Richmond
neighborhoods.

The new interchange is accessible from Richmond Street at a new signalized
intersection between Aramingo Avenue and Girard Avenue. A new northbound
off-ramp, situated adjacent to the new on-ramp, was opened in May 2017.

Prior to opening the new ramp to I-95 North, crews will shift the three
through
lanes of northbound I-95 traffic onto the rebuilt northbound lanes between
Columbia Avenue and the ramp to Allegheny Avenue. The new on-ramp will
continue
as a fourth, extended ramp lane to the off-ramp at Allegheny Avenue.

The work schedule is:

• Thursday, October 12, and Friday, October 13, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM
the
following morning, the ramp from northbound I-95 to Girard Avenue will be
closed and detoured. Motorists will be directed to exit at Allegheny Avenue
and
turn left onto Aramingo Avenue to access Girard Avenue; and
• Friday, October 13, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the
two
right lanes are scheduled to close on northbound I-95 between Interstate
676
and Allegheny Avenue.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling on I-95 through
the
work areas because slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are
weather
dependent.

Following the traffic shift, work will get underway to dismantle the
remaining,
inside section of the old northbound viaduct and complete construction of
the
new viaduct. The entire northbound viaduct is expected to be completed in
late
2018.

With the new ramp from Richmond Street to I-95 North reopened, PennDOT will

close the temporary detour road that was built for traffic heading to the
northbound on-ramp at Castor Avenue. The temporary road, which runs along
the
northbound side of I-95 from Ann Street to Allegheny Avenue, will be
reopened
during the reconstruction of the southbound lanes of I-95 between Allegheny

Avenue and Columbia Avenue.

Reconstruction of the southbound lanes of I-95 between the Allegheny Avenue
and
Girard Avenue interchanges, including the southbound viaduct between Ann
and
Palmer streets, is scheduled to begin in early 2018.

Current work at the Girard Avenue Interchange is being done under the
fifth-of-seven contracts, or sections, to rebuild, widen and improve I-95
between the Allegheny Avenue and Interstate 676 interchanges, including
reconstruction of the Girard Avenue Interchange. PennDOT already has
invested
more than $351 million to rebuild I-95 at Girard Avenue.
