PennDOT to Open I-95 to Four Through Lanes in Each Direction Between
Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today
that
Interstate 95 will open to four through lanes tonight, December 21, between
the
Cottman Avenue and Bridge Street interchanges in Northeast Philadelphia,
marking the end of mainline construction on a $212 million project to widen
and
reconstruct 1.4 miles of I-95 between Bleigh Avenue and Levick Street.

PennDOT began construction in late 2012 to rebuild and expand I-95 to
create a
fourth through lane in each direction at the Cottman Avenue (Route 73)
Interchange. The improvement project also included replacing seven
structurally
deficient bridges on the interstate; upgrading four existing ramps;
constructing 13 retaining walls; and installing storm water drainage pipes
and
Intelligent Transportation equipment. Next year, crews will complete work
to
extend Princeton Avenue east to Milnor Street, reconstruct New State Road,
install a storm water drainage pipe along Bleigh Avenue, resurface adjacent

intersections, and complete other related construction activities. The
project
is expected to finish in fall 2017.

Crews have worked the past several days to complete line painting and
barrier
removal, and install safety rumble strips along I-95. They also removed
barriers to fully open the rebuilt and widened I-95 north exit ramp to
Cottman
Avenue (Route 73) as well as the rebuilt and widened two-lane entrance ramp

from Princeton Avenue to I-95 north.

The contractor will work today to complete final adjustments on northbound
and
southbound I-95 and remove construction barrels to fully open the highway
to
four through lanes between Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue.

Walsh Construction Company II, LLC of Canonsburg, Pa. is the general
contractor
on the
$212,325,000 project, which is financed with 90 percent federal and 10
percent
state funds.

PennDOT continues to rebuild I-95 north of Center City Philadelphia as
construction is currently underway to reconstruct and improve I-95 at the
Girard Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge/ Aramingo Avenue interchanges.
Additional
contracts heading for construction in 2017 and beyond include further work
at
those two interchanges, plus the initial stages of rebuilding and improving
the
Bridge Street and Allegheny Avenue/Castor Avenue interchanges and adjacent
segments of I-95.
