PennDOT to Rehabilitate Route 401 Bridge over Branch of Pickering Creek in
West Vincent Township, Chester County

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, October 24, to rehabilitate the
Route 401 bridge (Conestoga Road) at the intersection of St. Mathews Road
in
West Vincent Township, Chester County. The intersection of Route 401
(Conestoga
Road) and St. Mathews Road will be closed and detoured until late December,
the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.

PennDOT's contractor will work the next eight weeks to rehabilitate the
structurally-deficient, one-span stone masonry arch bridge that was
restricted
to one lane on April 21, 2016, due to structural damage resulting from a
vehicle striking a bridge sidewall. The repair plan consists of removing
and
reconstructing the stone masonry sidewalls, installing new lightweight
concrete
fill in the arch, and resurfacing Route 401(Conestoga Road) and St.
Matthews
Road.

During construction, Route 401 (Conestoga Road) through traffic will be
detoured over Route 100 (Pottstown Pike), Graphite Mine Road, and Byers
Road.

Motorists traveling on St. Matthews Road will be detoured over Kimberton
Road,
Route 113, Route 401 (Conestoga Road), and Chester Springs Road

Built in 1870, the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge is 11 feet long and 42

feet wide. The structure carries 7,416 vehicles a day.

The rehabilitation of the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge is part of
PennDOT's $6.8 million project to rehabilitate four structurally-deficient
bridges in Bucks and Montgomery counties, three structurally-deficient
culverts
in Bucks County, and to stabilize a stream embankment at a bridge in Bucks
County. The cost to rehabilitate the Route 401 (Conestoga Road) bridge is
approximately $300,000.

This transportation improvement project is financed with 100 percent state
funds from Act 89, Pennsylvania's transportation plan.

All work on the project is scheduled to be completed in late 2018. The
general
contractor is Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, N.J.
