PennDOT - District 6 News: U.S.1 Lane Closures at Night Next Week Ahead of New Traffic Pattern in Bensalem Township, Bucks County

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

U.S.1 Lane Closures at Night Next Week Ahead of New Traffic Pattern in Bensalem Township, Bucks County

King of Prussia, PA –  U.S.1 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction at night next week from the Rockhill Road to Old Lincoln Highway for setup of a new long-term traffic pattern on a project to reconstruct, widen and improve a 1.3-mile section of the highway in Bensalem Township, Bucks County.

The lane restrictions will be in place Monday, February 4, through Friday, February 8, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning so crews can perform line painting operations and install temporary barrier that will separate southbound and northbound traffic during construction.

The new pattern, which will provide two through lanes in both directions plus a right turn lane for access to properties within the work zone, will move all traffic to the right (west) for approximately two years of construction of improvements on the northbound side of U.S. 1 and the ramps to and from Route 132 (Street Road).

The northbound side of the temporary pattern is tentatively scheduled to be set up during nighttime lane restrictions planned on Monday, February 11, through Friday, February 15, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning. The schedule is weather permitting.

This corridor improvement project is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of the City of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.

Initial activities this winter include temporary reconstruction and widening of existing shoulders along U.S. 1 and Route 132 (Street Road); installation of a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Route 132 (Street Road) and Township Road; the extension of Township Road to several local businesses on U.S. 1; and construction of new driveway configurations for the Red Roof Inn. Additionally, stormwater system improvements and stream mitigation activities will commence in various locations along the corridor.

In early 2019, reconstruction of existing northbound U.S. 1 and the bridges will begin, as well as construction to replace and improve the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Route 132 (Street Road) interchange ramps adjacent to northbound U.S. 1. Concurrently, the contractor will begin rebuilding eastbound Route 132 (Street Road) and incorporate two new ramps adjacent to eastbound traffic for the realignment of the U.S. 1 Interchange at Route 132 (Street Road).

Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the $97,352,764 project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. All work on this project is expected to complete by late 2022.

PennDOT's contractor replaced the existing bridge with a two-span, pre-stressed, concrete spread box beam bridge. The new structure is 124 feet long, 35 feet wide and includes five-foot shoulders.

The new structure replaces the three-span, steel I-beam bridge built in 1924. That structure was 116 feet long, 22 feet wide, and carried an average of 5,217 vehicles a day.

H&K Group of Skippack, Montgomery County was the general contractor on the $1,479,567 bridge improvement project.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Improve Flood-Damaged Balligomingo Road in West Conshohocken Borough

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Improve Flood-Damaged Balligomingo Road in West Conshohocken Borough

King of Prussia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced today that preliminary construction will begin next month on a project to stabilize, restore and improve flood-damaged sections of Balligomingo Road in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County. Brandywine Creek Road in Newlin Township, Chester County will also be repaired under this contract beginning this summer.

"These projects will address the current slope failure areas and restore the roadways to a safe condition for use by the public and emergency services," Governor Tom Wolf said.

Balligomingo Road has been closed to thru traffic since June 2015 due to slope failure areas encroaching approximately 200 feet of the roadway between Portland Road and the Interstate 476 overpass. Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will stabilize the failure areas by installing rock protection and a retaining wall; install new drainage systems to properly carry roadside and slope runoff to nearby Gulph Creek; and mill and pave Balligomingo Road.

A planned detour has been in place since the 2015 closure, therefore this operation will not impact local traffic further. Construction on this project is expected to start in February and be completed in spring 2020.

Brandywine Creek Road between Green Valley Road and Powell Road in Newlin Township, Chester County has been closed to westbound traffic since March 2017 due to the instability of slope areas along the highway located near the West Branch of Brandywine Creek. Beginning early this summer, the contractor will install a retaining wall along failed slope areas; reconstruct and protect the streambank; and restore the existing pavement and guiderail along Brandywine Creek Road.

Due to the limited width of the existing roadway, steepness of the adjacent slopes and proximity to the creek, a full detour will be implemented by the contractor during most of the operations.   Construction on this project will be completed by summer 2020.

Road-Con Inc. of West Chester, Chester County is the general contractor on the $5,616,723 project.

Construction on Brandywine Creek Road is being financed with 100 percent state funds, while work on Balligomingo Road is being financed with 100 percent federal funds.

PennDOT - District 6 News: Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Widen, Reconstruct 2.8-Mile Section of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County

An update has been published to District 6 News on the PennDOT website. Please see below for details.

PennDOT - District 6 News

Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Widen, Reconstruct 2.8-Mile Section of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County

King of Prussia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced today that preliminary construction will begin on Monday, January 28, on a project to widen and reconstruct a 2.8-mile section in East Norriton and Whitpain townships, Montgomery County.

"This reconstruction effort is a critical component to a multi-phase corridor-wide program to improve travel and safety along a nine-mile section of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County," Governor Tom Wolf said.

Under this project, PennDOT will reconstruct and widen U.S. 202 from two lanes to five lanes with a center turn lane from Township Line Road to just south of Morris Road; install five-foot bicycle lanes in both directions along the entire project area; and build new sidewalks at various locations along the corridor.

Additional improvements under this project include:
  • Reconstructing five box culverts;
  • Constructing a sound wall and retaining walls;
  • Installing new traffic signals, signing and pavement markings;
  • Performing drainage improvements;
  • Integrating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve traffic flow;
  • Constructing a wetland mitigation site to compensate for wetlands impact; and
  • Removing a portion of a breached dam on the Wissahickon Creek to mitigate stream impacts.
The wetland and stream mitigation sites are located near the intersection of Butler Pike and Morris Road in Upper Dublin Township.

Initial activities this winter through 2020 will primarily include utility relocation and installation operations throughout various sections of the project limits. Daytime and nighttime lane closures will be in place during non-peak travel times as needed by the contractor and utility crews.

Beginning Monday, January 28, single lane closures will be in place on northbound and southbound U.S. 202 between Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and Tournament Drive in Whitpain Township for utility relocation by PECO. Weather permitting, the single lane closures will be in place Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, through the spring.

Motorists are advised to allow more time for travel in the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur.
