Wolf Administration Announces Start of Construction to Widen, Reconstruct 2.8-Mile Section of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County
King of Prussia, PA – The Wolf Administration announced today that preliminary construction will begin on Monday, January 28, on a project to widen and reconstruct a 2.8-mile section in East Norriton and Whitpain townships, Montgomery County.
"This reconstruction effort is a critical component to a multi-phase corridor-wide program to improve travel and safety along a nine-mile section of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County," Governor Tom Wolf said.
Under this project, PennDOT will reconstruct and widen U.S. 202 from two lanes to five lanes with a center turn lane from Township Line Road to just south of Morris Road; install five-foot bicycle lanes in both directions along the entire project area; and build new sidewalks at various locations along the corridor.
Additional improvements under this project include:
- Reconstructing five box culverts;
- Constructing a sound wall and retaining walls;
- Installing new traffic signals, signing and pavement markings;
- Performing drainage improvements;
- Integrating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to improve traffic flow;
- Constructing a wetland mitigation site to compensate for wetlands impact; and
- Removing a portion of a breached dam on the Wissahickon Creek to mitigate stream impacts.
The wetland and stream mitigation sites are located near the intersection of Butler Pike and Morris Road in Upper Dublin Township.
Initial activities this winter through 2020 will primarily include utility relocation and installation operations throughout various sections of the project limits. Daytime and nighttime lane closures will be in place during non-peak travel times as needed by the contractor and utility crews.
Beginning Monday, January 28, single lane closures will be in place on northbound and southbound U.S. 202 between Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and Tournament Drive in Whitpain Township for utility relocation by PECO. Weather permitting, the single lane closures will be in place Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, through the spring.
Motorists are advised to allow more time for travel in the work area because backups and slowdowns will occur.
