U.S. 1, Street Road Lane Closures at Night Next Week to Complete New Traffic Patterns in Bensalem Township
King of Prussia, PA – Lane closures will be in place at night next week in each direction on U.S. 1 and Street Road (Route 132) in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, to complete the setup of two long-term traffic patterns that will close the northbound U.S. 1 ramps to and from eastbound Street Road (Route 132), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
Implementation of the new patterns will mark the start of northbound reconstruction on a $94 million project to widen and improve a 1.3-mile section of U.S. 1 from Old Lincoln Highway, at the Philadelphia border, to north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Bensalem Interchange.
On Monday, February 11, through Friday, February 15, from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning, northbound and southbound U.S. 1 will be reduced to a single lane between Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway, and Street Road (Route 132) will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way.
All scheduled activities are weather dependent. If any of the scheduled activities are cancelled, the planned lane restrictions also may be in place on both highways from 8:00 PM Saturday, February 16, to 6:00 AM Sunday, February 17.
The lane restrictions on U.S. 1 will allow crews to complete installing and securing the temporary construction barrier that separates southbound and northbound U.S. 1 traffic during construction. Once all of the center barrier is installed and secured late next week, weather permitting, northbound traffic will be shifted to the west.
Crews will then close the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and eastbound Street Road (Route 132), complete installation of the concrete barrier that separates northbound U.S. 1 traffic from the work area and begin reconstruction of the northbound side of U.S.1 and the ramps to and from northbound U.S.1 and eastbound Street Road (Route 132).
The lane restrictions on Street Road (Route 132) also will allow crews to complete the set-up of a temporary traffic pattern at the U.S. 1 overpass that will be in place for construction on the overpass and on the ramps on the south side of the interchange.
The new pattern on Street Road (Route 132) also will include a temporary signalized intersection that will allow motorists on northbound U.S. 1 to continue to access eastbound Street Road once the ramps are closed by using the ramps to and from northbound U.S. 1 and Street Road.
Ramps to and from U.S. 1 and westbound Street Road (Route 132) also will be rebuilt and realigned during northbound U.S. 1 reconstruction but will remain open.
The new pattern on U.S. 1 will move two lanes of northbound and southbound traffic to the west for approximately two years while the northbound side of U.S. 1 and the Street Road (Route 132) ramps are reconstructed. Turn lanes also will be provided in both directions of U.S. 1 for access to properties within the work zone.
This corridor improvement project is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1; replace aging bridges; and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of the City of Philadelphia to just north of Route 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.
Allan A. Myers, Inc. of Worcester, Montgomery County is the general contractor on the first contract which is expected to be completed by late 2022.
