U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) Daytime Lane Closures Scheduled for Bridge Construction in Concord Township

King of Prussia, PA — U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) will be reduced to a single lane from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 7, between Spring Valley Road and Cambridge Drive in Concord Township, Delaware County for deck beam placement on the westbound side of the new bridge over Smithbridge Road, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Flaggers will direct an alternating single lane of eastbound and westbound traffic through the work area during the lifting and placement of the precast concrete beams for the single span structure. The scheduled activity is weather permitting.  If the operation is not completed or delayed, the single lane conditions may be in place on Wednesday, January 8, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel through the work area or to use an alternate route as significant backups are expected in both directions.

PennDOT began construction in early 2017 on the first-of-two mainline projects (Section 101) to widen and reconstruct a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street) in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, Delaware County.

PennDOT's contractor on the Section 101 project is currently building two new westbound lanes — including the westbound side of bridges over Smithbridge Road and over Webb Creek — following completion in early 2019 of two new eastbound lanes. When work on the westbound side is completed by mid-2020, the contractor will construct the new median, the final major stage of Section 101. Construction of Section 101 is expected to be completed in late 2020.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Engineering design is advancing for the widening and reconstruction of the eastern section (Section 102) of the highway from just east of Clayton Park Drive to just east of Route 452 (Market Street). Engineering design also continues a contract to replace the U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) bridge over the CSX railroad and Bethel Road and improve the adjacent Bethel Road Interchange.
