PennDOT to Reopen I-95 South Ramp to Chestnut Street (Exit 6) August 19-26 in the City of Chester, Delaware County
King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that it will reopen the ramp from southbound Interstate 95 to Chestnut Street (Exit 6) in the City of Chester, Delaware County, from 2:00 PM Monday, August 19, to 9:00 AM Monday, August 26, to accommodate Widener University student move-in activities.
Once the ramp is reclosed Monday morning, motorists will be directed to continue south on I-95, exit at U.S. 322 East/Commodore Barry Bridge, follow signs for Route 291 (Chester), take Route 291 North (2nd Street), make a left on Madison Street, right on 9th Street and left of Morton Avenue to access Chestnut Street. The ramp from southbound I-95 to Chestnut Street (Exit 6) will remain closed through the end of December for construction.
Under this $27.8 million improvement project, PennDOT is rehabilitating the multi-span, steel girder bridges on Potter Street, Madison Street, Upland Street, Melrose Avenue, Chestnut Street, Edgmont Avenue, and the Crosby Street and Walnut Street pedestrian structures. The contractor is also improving the I-95 south exit ramp at Chestnut Street.
PennDOT owns the Edgmont Avenue and Madison Street bridges, and the City of Chester owns the remaining six structures.
In addition to the bridge and ramp improvements, PennDOT's contractor is repairing Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue from 12th Street to 4th Street; reconstructing curbs and sidewalks; milling and resurfacing the streets; installing a new traffic signal at Chestnut Street and Morton Avenue; upgrading the traffic signal at Morton Avenue and 7th Street; and reconstructing Morton Avenue from 7th Street to 4th Street to lower the road under the Amtrak overpass to increase vertical clearance.
South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J. is the general contractor on this project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
