PennDOT to Improve Travel and Safety on U.S. 1 (City Avenue) in
Philadelphia and Montgomery County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will start
construction
Tuesday, August 2, on a $2.9 million project to improve travel and safety
on a
three mile section of U.S. 1 (City Avenue) between Interstate 76 and U.S.
30
(Lancaster Avenue) in Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery
County, by installing adaptive traffic signals to improve traffic flow and
pedestrian safety along the corridor. The project is scheduled to finish in

November 2017.

Crews will work the next 16 months to upgrade and fully modernize 17
signalized
intersections along U.S. 1 (City Avenue) with a new wireless communication
system to better accommodate traffic flow. The improvements also include
the
installation of new pedestrian push buttons, traffic signal heads, pavement

markings, overhead street signs, and 74 new ADA curb ramps.

In addition to installing adaptive traffic signals, PennDOT's contractor
will
perform various other roadway improvements on U.S. 1 (City Avenue),
including a
new left turn and lane configurations at Cardinal Avenue to improve traffic
and
safety at that intersection.

During construction, U.S. 1 (City Avenue) motorists can expect to face lane

restrictions and possible slowdowns Mondays through Saturdays from 9:00 AM
to
3:00 PM while upgrades are performed at each intersection.

The work schedule for next week, weather permitting, is:

• On Tuesday, August 2, through Saturday, August 20, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
lane restrictions are scheduled on U.S. 1 (City Avenue) at Lapsley Lane;

• On Thursday, August 4, through Saturday, August 20, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
lane restrictions are scheduled on U.S. 1 (City Avenue) at 59th
Street/Raynham
Road; and

• On Monday, August 8, through Saturday, August 20, from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM,
lane restrictions are scheduled on U.S. 1 (City Avenue) at Drexel
Road/Merion
Road.

Armor & Sons Electric Inc., of Langhorne, Bucks County, is the general
contractor on the $2,895,674 project, which is financed with 100 percent
federal funds.

The City Avenue Special Services District was responsible for initiating
this
transportation improvement project and advancing it by obtaining a
Congestion
Mitigation and Air Quality grant for the acquisition and installation of
new
traffic-adaptive signal equipment, and financing the engineering design of
the
new signal system.
