NWS Weather Briefing

Emergency Management Partners and Stakeholders,


Attached is the latest weather briefing from the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, NJ regarding a coastal storm that is currently affecting the region today, Tuesday (March 14th) through Wednesday morning (March 15th)


A mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain is expected in Chester County. Strong winds are expected too.  Precipitation will end from south to north beginning later this morning as the coastal storm moves north. With colder temperatures tonight, ponded water on untreated roads will freeze.


Hazards with this storm include accumulating snow, coastal flooding, and strong winds. At the current time snow totals forecasted for Chester County have narrowed from as little as 4 inches to as high at 12 inches.  Icing accumulations are forecasted at being approximately 0.05" throughout the county.


Key Updates:

More sleet and freezing rain has occurred than originally expected.  A projection of ice glazing has been generated as a result of this.

A Blizzard Warning is still in effect for Western portions of Chester County; eastern portions of Chester County have been downgraded to a Winter Storm Warning until March 14th at 6:00pm.


Chester County Forecasted Conditions:

Anticipated Timing: Snow will continue during the day on Tuesday.  Snow is forecasted mainly before 7 pm on Tuesday and will taper off Tuesday night into Wednesday.  

Active watches & warnings: Blizzard Warning until March 14th 6:00 PM; Winter Storm Warning until March 14th 6:00 PM


Impacts:

Whiteout conditions may occur as a result of the snow / ice and high winds.

Accumulating snow and ice can have major impacts on travel.

Snow, wind, and ice could cause down power lines and possible widespread power outages.

The heavy snow and ice will make many roads impassable.

Strong winds will lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

We will continue to monitor this event and provide additional information as it becomes available.
