I-76 East Full Closure This Weekend, Overnight Lane Closure Next Week for Viaduct Rehabilitation in Center City Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – Eastbound Interstate 76 between the 30th Street and South Street exits in Philadelphia will be reduced to one lane at 9:00 PM Friday, November 8, then closed completely at 11:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, November 11, for viaduct repair and repaving in Center City Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

During the weekend closure of eastbound I-76, motorists will be directed to use the following alternate routes:

  • Follow eastbound I-676 to southbound Interstate 95 to access I-76; or
  • Exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76.

The Walnut Street ramp to eastbound I-76 also will be closed from 9:00 PM Friday, November 8, through 5:00 AM Monday, November 11. Motorists will be directed to follow Walnut Street, turn left on 38th Street and go straight on University Avenue to 34th Street and the ramp to eastbound I-76.

  • Next week, the following weather-dependent lane restrictions will be in place on I-76:

  • Monday, November 11, through Thursday, November 14, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for overhead viaduct repair and repainting. If any of the scheduled weeknight closures are cancelled due to weather, eastbound I-76 may be reduced to one lane from 9:00 PM Friday, November 15, to 6:00 AM Saturday, November 16;
  • Monday, November 11, through Friday, November 15, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, there will be periodic, short-term closures of the right deceleration lane on westbound I-76 approaching the ramp to 30th Street for concrete placement under the viaduct; and
  • Tuesday, November 12, through Friday, November 15, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, there will be periodic slow-moving traffic patterns on eastbound and westbound I-76 between the City Avenue and Passyunk Avenue exits for removal of traffic control signs.

Motorists are advised that the paving schedule may change based on weather forecasts because the paving material being used on the I-76 viaduct is a synthetic concrete (Polyester Polymer Concrete) that must be applied under dry conditions. The PPC material is being used because the synthetic concrete cures faster, allowing the viaduct's surface to be rehabilitated while minimizing the need for long-term lane closures that are required for curing conventional concrete pavement.

Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas during the lane closures because significant backups and delays will occur.

PennDOT is repairing and resurfacing the I-76 viaduct under a $39.8 million contract that also includes repairs to the three-span I-76 structure over Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) in West Conshohocken Borough, just east of the Interstate 476/Conshohocken Interchange in Montgomery County. More information is available at www.I76viaduct.com.

Repairs to the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct are part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River — which is scheduled to close for one year beginning in mid-June — and eight other nearby structures, including those carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
