Chestnut Street Reduced to Two Lanes Wednesday between 30th Street and Schuylkill Avenue

King of Prussia, PA – Chestnut Street will be reduced to two travel lanes and a bicycle lane between 30th Street and Schuylkill Avenue in Philadelphia for approximately six months beginning overnight Wednesday, October 10, for expanding construction on the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. Crews will set up a new traffic pattern between 8:00 PM Wednesday, October 10, and 5:00 AM Thursday, October 11.

Under the new traffic pattern, motorists turning left onto Schuylkill Avenue to access westbound Interstate 76, Interstate 676 or Market Street will use the left lane on Chestnut Street, potentially causing significant backups and delays on Chestnut Street.

The new traffic pattern also will close the pedestrian crosswalk on the north side of Chestnut Street at Schuylkill Avenue, requiring pedestrians to use the crosswalk on the south side of Chestnut Street.

Crews are currently rehabilitating sections of the Schuylkill Avenue viaducts over Interstate 76 as part of PennDOT's $103.6 million project to repair the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River and seven other nearby structures, including the viaducts carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.

Buckley & Company Inc., of Philadelphia is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
