PennDOT Announces Tree Clearing Operations to Begin on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia
King of Prussia, PA – Operations are scheduled to begin Monday, October 15, on a project to clear trees determined to be in bad condition along a five-mile stretch of Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.
"Clearing and trimming trees will help mitigate safety concerns associated with unhealthy trees that pose a risk of falling onto the expressway," District Executive Ken McClain said. "I-76 is one of Pennsylvania's busiest highways, carrying up to 137,000 motorists a day, making this vegetation management project a necessary investment."
On Monday, October 15, through Friday, November 2, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, weekday lane restrictions are scheduled on Interstate 76 in both directions at the Girard Avenue and Montgomery Drive interchanges in Philadelphia, for tree clearing operations.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because slowdowns will occur during this safety enhancement project. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
These operations are part of a vegetation management project that includes the clearing, clean-up and stabilization of an 18-acre area along a five-mile section of I-76 between the U.S. 1 and 30th Street/Market Street interchanges in Philadelphia.
J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County is the general contractor on the $1,770,861 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds. The project is expected to finish in summer 2019.
